They are all fantastic but for various reasons these Ukuleles get less attention than other models in each brands range or perhaps they sit at a price point where there is lots of well established competition?

The Baton Rouge sounded really good. There was very good note separation from the Romero Creations which, for me, made it stand out. Thanks very much.

This was another great video Alex. My favorite, sound wise, is the Romero Creations Replica. Pepe has these made to be, in terms of appearance, replicas of his custom ukuleles. Except the headstock where the replica is the same shape, but Pepe does not put any writing or logo on his custom instuments. I really liked its fulness of tone and I really like Mahogany as a tone wood. Next I liked the Baton Rouge and Ana'Ole about the same. They also had nice full rich tones to me. Then I liked the Islander MAT-4. I think Kanilea is really good about getting the Kanilea sound into its Islander ukuleles and the spalted Maple laminate really looks nice. I just finished working on a MAC-4 for a local ukulele shop and am having trouble resisting buying it myself because it sounds so nice and I don't have a wood Concert. Lol

Thanks Alex, great selection there! I really appreciate the exposure to instruments and brands that would never otherwise see/hear. By the end of your videos I can never remember which ones I liked best so I always have to go back through LOL!

The Baton Rouge sounded amazing!! Despite folks wanting to change the string i think the Aquilas added punchy-ness which i like alot.

Alex, I always love your Reviews! I enjoy the tunes you pick to play, and I appreciate that you play the same song on each model! Your reviews are so informative. And, I can tell when one is out of my price range, as you just don't mention the price. : ) After listening to the tone for a bit, I try to follow what you're playing and being a beginner, I Always Butcher the poor song, but I have tons of fun trying! Thanks for your time and talent - I enjoy the warmer toned ones, soft and mellow is my favorite tone. Keep up the good work! : )

Hi Alex, those Kamaka HF models clearly demonstrate the differences in tonal quality of the three sizes. That soprano has got to be the jangliest ( if that's even a word ) that I've ever heard. Anybody that owns an Uke or two from the three big K workshops is already aware that you get what you pay for but those are crystal and no mistake. I have to say that it is really obvious that you're spaced on coffee 🤣 but whatever gets you through those first months has to done. One thing, if it's taking a toll on you then your good lady must be climbing the walls. Even my two granddaughters are in their 20s now and although I have no desire to be young again I'll be glad for those two to find me a great grandchild or two. Ya have to have the sleepless nights if you want the priceless but too short days 🙂. Wouldn't change my Ko'aloha and Kanile'a concerts either.

The flight Leia is part of their 'princess series' and was named after actual princess Leia off of Star Wars so yes, you were right Alex! Being a Star Wars fan was one of the main reasons I bought that uke - I guess their marketing worked on me :) I also own the aNueNue AMM3 - I need to stop buying ukes!!!!

Love the sound and look of the Breedlove....prefer ukes with a low G so the Romero sounded best to me but overly fancy looking...:)

Lovely! Another good Guide. An unrelated question: what tonewoods/models would you recommend for a venture into low G country? I noticed some nice pineapples in your video's recently :-)

The common answer for good low G Ukes is spruce and cedar tops but definitely pineapples... That bigger body and a low G is a winning combination

Hi Alex, another great video! I've always wanted to know the difference in sound between the Romero Creations Replica tenor vs the Grand Tenor. What's your take on it?

The Grand Tenor is bigger sounding and very open. Also, the single notes cut through very crisply. The Replica is much more subtle and I personally feel that it has something a little bit more special about it. The Grand Tenors feel nice and jumbo but the Replicas have a bit more personality.

I greatly enjoy your reviews but I'm curious as to why you don't carry Lanikai ukuleles?

We were a big Lanikai dealer between 2008-2014 and then for a number of years the quality nosedived and we had to just stop selling them. I took a fresh look at them in January at the NAMM show and we have slowly reintroduced a few models but many of them the quality is still not as good as it should be and other ukes at the same price are. I do continue to look at Lanikai for SUS but we would rather have brands with better quality control that we have faith in... I hope that makes sense. I'm not saying Lanikai are bad, just Kala, Ohana, Flight, Baton Rouge and many more are more consistent.

@@SouthernUkuleleStore Thank you for responding. I totally get what you are saying. I must have gotten lucky because I own 4 Lanikais ( MAS-CET, MAS-T, SPST-T and an older LU11 soprano) and all are free of defect and play nicely. I also own a Kala KA-SA-8T from their discontinued solid acacia line, but I am going to be selling it due to the fingerboard is a little to narrow for my fat fingers with double the strings under them. Fit and finish is well done on that as well. My dream uke is a Koaloha KTM-00. Thank you again for your time in responding to me and for the great videos. I have also subscribed to your personal channel and look forward to new content from you.

Thanks very much... The Lanikai ukes can be totally fine. For us if 2 in a box of 6 fail it's no good but plenty of shops that do smaller selections won't be dissecting them or finding as many issues as we do. It's the same with lots of brands and I imagine lots of industry's. Take care, thanks for the support

That’s interesting. The local music stores here in Minneapolis area feature Lanakia and I just can’t get excited about them. They have some flight. I wish they would have more of the higher end ones here

Alex.... does your personal collection include right-handed models or do you have left-handed models, or both? I notice you describe them and show them, then play them upside down. I’ll admit, that’s impressive unto itself having to do the mental gymnastics to get the chords.

I have a personal channel called 'ukes with alex' here on KZfaq where I run through my own instruments. I don't own anything strung right handed but nearly all of my instruments are right handed ones converted to lefty.

Please explain the term double pickup. Do you mean two pickups stuck to the soundboard our a mix of a pickup under the bridge plus one on the soundboard

Nope. Double are the brand It's a single piezo undersaddle pickup with a volume and tone control. The company also make a version with two pickups just to really make things confusing...

The Flight and Kala are better than the Ohana... The Flight is slightly better value for money than the Kala so the Flight is my personal winner 🏆

The UKT-518 in this video is the most affordable Tenor they make so that one. If you want a Concert look at the UKC-498.

Don't buy direct from Breedlove then. A specialist ukulele store will do a better job with the final set up and customer service than a manufacturer 9/10... I don't even necessarily mean us, if you are in the US like the comment suggests then try Mim or Uke Republic.

I've spoken about this before in other videos and joked about it with my Hawaiian friends and colleagues... both pronunciations are known and understood worldwide. The way that certain English words are pronounced by Americans is different to the original but nobody minds and most of the English language is butchered versions of French and Spanish words.
