If the team is dominating and winning, make some tactical substitutions around 65 minutes, rest the players, maybe change the formation. Even in the Italy game, Phillips was struggling but he left him on anyway. Aside from starting Maguire (which I don't agree with), I have no confidence that the manager has learned from past mistakes.

Maguire is indeed one of the greatest England defenders in history. and never makes errors in an England shirt, as stats clearly show. People forget Southgate does this every time, attacking football vs dead teams finally play a top team instantly changes to scared defensive tactics, and people say yea but we have to play like that.. No we don't just keep playing all out attack & get Maguire out of defence.

I think you've been playing too much fifa or football manager mate, against top teams you'd get battered on the counter if you played too attacking against them. For me Southgate needs to feel out games more, sniff out danger better and change things up to help the team or when we're on top go for the throat and finish them off. The best managers understand that games sway in momentum and act accordingly in these moments. There is nobody more important to a team than the manager

I keep hearing Southgate done his thing in Italy other night that team on talent alone won that. He’s done a cracking job getting moral up from where England were but it’s similar too ogs at man United he got moral up but can only take them so far. Let me tell you something for nothing aswel he’ll reinstate sterling because it’s his last tournament and how about him bringing sterling on as first attacking sub vs France when he didn’t train and wasn’t exactly flying and screwed Rashford and grealish I mean what sort of message does that send.

Also preventing English Players from playing for country because he picks same players regardless of form,or Match Sharpness. Throws in the odd new 1 because of media presure and unless player a significantly weaker opponent they dont get a chance then resorts back to type

Southgate couldn’t even get a job in the championship let alone the prem, he has no identity in his play, he said he’d pick players on form and hasn’t done that and keeps picking the same faces, not just Maguire but Pickford yes he’s been good for England but if we’re gonna talk about form Ramsdale has to be number 1. He also showed his inability to manage when he took off Foden after 3 minutes instead of taking off Saka who’d been on for 85 and then the next game to give Saka a full 90, Southgate is a club managers nightmare

There has definitely been times when Southgate has made subs and they've had instant impact on the game so it's important to acknowledge that but I know what benty's saying, it's in those huge game like the semi's or final where he could be more proactive sniffing out danger and ruthless when we're on top.

I don't know if it was macoist or John Barnes he said umm Aye right . I'm sure I've heard all this before 🤔 About how good this England side are .since 1966BC that's all we hear . England this and that world class players and what have you . Southgate hasn't won a thing he has his own ways and he has had opportunities to win a cup or two but blew it both times .some of the players are top notch but they must be frustrated at game time . certain players will start no matter what there club position is .and subs been given 10 or so mins a game .

Southgate plays with the handbrake on when our strength is in attack & picks some players that are too old or don't play regularly enough for their clubs. He doesn't make changes quick enough when needed . It's so frustrating when England could be so much better!

As much as it annoys me that Southgate chooses the same players, instead of those that may deserve a spot in the squad, I can't believe after beating Italy 2-1 and Ukraine 2-0 that Southgate is doing a terrible job. A 60.5% win ratio and a euro final under his belt, you'd think this Southgate guy has not got England out of the qualifying stages of tournaments. That's the thing with being an Engliah manager - not only are you never 'good enough', but there's this mentality with fans that England should win every game (in a dreamland, that'd be great, but there are other exceptional teams who also win, which makes it disrespectful to think they should roll over because fans would throw their toys out of the pram if England don't win).

Bruh. This lack of ambition is the reason why England has not won a major tournament in a couple ice ages. You think that beating Italy is a big deal? Italy has not qualified for a World Cup in almost a decade. Ukraine at home? That should be always a win.

It's not that they should win, but there are other players who will elevate this team that are not being selected that would give the team a better chance of winning. If the point is to play decent enough but not mount a realistic challenge then keep Southgate

I don't think he'll win you many trophies, but he has brought stability to the squad since being appointed, and is technically one of England's most successful managers. Definitely time for a change though if they don't win the Euros.

Very true in my opinion. Most of the other countries would think they have a chance at winning with 6-7 of England's second picks in their squad. The coach is holding them back, prime example euro finals; any other coach would win that game. England will not have this talented a squad forever. When that is gone, it will not be in anyone's benefit to hear, I told you so.

Tbf mate its BECAUSE of Southgate that we're now regarded as one of the favourites in major tournaments. The way he completely destroyed the club cliques culture in the England camp, dropped huge mainstays (looking at you rooney), plays progressive exciting football and completely got the media back on side from when they were all toxic and negative. I think he's earned his place.

@@craigoliver8712 Check the records, Arsenal are the third biggest club in this country only behind Man U & Liverpool. Those two are the only two clubs to have won more PL/League titles than Arsenal. Arsenal have won the FA Cup more than any other club. They just lack CL success. Man City are still way behind Arsenal, as are Chelsea, despite them winning the CL twice. However both those clubs recent success is based on financial doping, effectively cheating, by buying buying trophies, that does not make them a big club! So with those facts in place, how on earth can you state that Arsenal aren't even a top 5 club?

Darren Bent and every England fan that thinks this - go back to 2016 when Gareth took over. Have a look at that team, that just got knocked out of the Euros by Iceland and were being ridiculed by the Welsh, and ask yourself if you'd have dreamed of making semis x2, a quarters and a final in the next 4 tournaments. Then humble yourselves. This isn't "the greatest England team ever", it's a decent team that isn't losing games it should win like past teams. The next step is to beat teams around and above us. Having beat Spain away (2019), Germany (2021) and now Italy away some would say this is already happening.

💯% Southgate has failed at 4 previous tournaments. Nothing suggests that he has learned from his previous failings. He's going to fail again at his 5 tournament. The FA won't sack him because he's a suit type and he wont upset the FA's reputation. He's a safe bet, he won't bring them bad headlines. Southgate should have gone after the Euro's he should never have gone to the WC. Southgate holds this squad backwards.

he is a good lad old Southgate, the players like him, there is a good team spirit about the the place, but nothing is perfect. he does lack in game management. but it is as good as we can have. and i believe we can truly win this one. there is only 2 concerns, France and poor refs officials in tournaments.

Every Media and FA are just super results orientated in keeping Southgate in but all these qualifiers/friendlies/group games etc are games most England managers before him have won, most managers doing the same job would win because the quality is there and Southgate has had the easiest draws. I'm sorry but Southgate had no CV before getting the job and has kept his job on the back of the ability of the English talent...Sadly talent alone doesn't make you win trophies just ask Harry Kane!! You need that something else and Southgate just doesn't have it. As soon as his England career is over he won't do anything as a boss, you mark these words!! We need a progressive forward thinking boss, lets be honest Potter should have got the England job after the WC and not the Chelsea one.

So what about englands golden generation before this one when we had the likes of rio, Terry, ashley Cole, G Nev, lamps gerrard scholes becks Cole shearer rooney etc, were sven cappello and hodgson lucky they had those players too? Cuz those players were much better than what we have now and didn't achieve squat with England

@@philbarton2832 exactly what about them? They’re irrelevant in this conversation. The quality of opposition was far far better then than now. Spain, France, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Netherlands, Portugal were all very strong. Who are the stand out teams now? The golden generation had superstars but were limited in balance. We had great centre mids and strikers but lacked depth on the wings while playing 442 which relies on width. Beckham couldn’t assist everything. The rivalries between teams were deep then not like now so when they got together there were divides all over the camp. We have better balance now and a crop of players that grew up in era where they were trained to be technical. They’re all connected through social media and stuff so they’re all friends when they get together. You can see them laughing and joking together during derby matches which shows the difference. Gerrard and Carragher wouldn’t be laughing with Neville and co on a derby game. Two completely different eras that can’t be compared

@@hellalive8973 I don't buy into that arguement, players today are much more technical and versatile whereas last gen players were mostly more specialist in one position and formations were much more rigid. Players nowadays need to adapt to more systems and formations. There are still strong nations but nowadays we see more quality across the board rather than the same top teams so maybe the quality is spread over wider this gen. Southgate was the catalyst in destroying the old toxic rivalry culture. I firmly believe under this culture gerrard and lamps could play together and play very well and with all those superstars Southgate would have won something by now. I don't think England players necessarily enjoyed playing for England back then but under Southgate this crop absolutely love it. Gareth didn't get lucky with these England players because he was the one who has been building everything from the ground up for many years now even when he was managing the under 21's. They all trust and love him and it shows in the workrate they get through in games. There is nobody more important for a team than the manager

England played well against Italy for the 1st half but were lucky not to drop points in the 2nd. Against Ukraine, I felt they took it very easy on them, arguably for reasons I won't mention. Scored two goals in a matter of minutes and the rest of the game was a snore fest.

England is a good team but with Gareth Southgate as coach England will struggle to win anything. He is so rigid he does not try other players that need a chance or brings them in when there is no point. He is fixated with playing two number 6s and an 8 and will play out of position a creative 10 like he did with Maddison to accommodate his defensive structure. You don't win tournaments with that kind of structure. England wasted an opportunity to fire him and get someone who will progress this team. England has the best talent available this era but this will be a dead end with this coach.

Bent is correct, If you look at the teams that had dominance at international level for a long period of time like Spain , Germany , they all had a similar set up and style with domestic teams , Spain were playing like Madrid , Barcelona, and others , Germany adopted the domestic style as well , so both Nation teams took the style from the domestic leagues as the players playing domestic would then transition to national team style with ease. England currently have some of best high pressing teams in the world the players playing domestically are now doing this week in and week out . Yet internationally we simply do not . Great that Southgate keeps the camp happy but England with this crop of players and the way they are playing domestically should have been dominating international football and should have been for the last 4 years like Spain like Germany did but england have a dinosaur of manager who cannot see this opportunity . Ffs it's plain to see you have the players all playing domestically like this ripping teams apart destroying teams with this style they all know how to play this way thanks to club level and england have a manager whom has no clue how to play like this. This will be a massive no this is not will be this a massive opportunity missed

Qualification isn't a yard stick it's how you perform in the hard knockout games and to date Southgate has messed up X3 of them. He's not tactically good enough and keeps picking players regardless of form. I think most fans now would be happy to move on

The game against Italy showed Southgate still has poor in game tactical awareness. We won but we were hanging on. Before the sending off you could see the Italians getting into the game. Secondly the only player close enough to be able to control a game in my view is James Maddison. Although he played well in the recent Ukraine game he will be a bit part player under Southgate. Southgate prefers players such as Connor Gallagher, Mason Mount and kelvin Phillips over foden, maddison and Grealish. He is holding us back...

Italy only got back in the game because of a Maguire blunder and you're never going to dominate them for 90 minutes in Italy. Against Ukraine the players were more concerned about not getting injured in the second 45, knowing the job was already done. Ukraine didn't have a shot on target.

P.S i don't think Foden was out because of a flu for the second game, I think he was embarrassed for being subbed on then off, while tired players like Saka was left on...even though Saka is better defensively, I felt sorry for him. Bissaka and Walker has 0 goals and assists this season in EPL, with the former always on the bench at United like Maguire. Alex Arnold is quality going forward but rubbish at defending. If James ain't playing, White should replace him. Watch a few Arsenal games and you will know why Saka is lethal with White behind him.
