Southsea and Ryde on Hovercraft (2017)

Including lots of footage, both inside and out of the Hovertravel Freedom 90 hovercraft. Southsea, Portsmouth in the UK is just 10 minutes away from Ryde on the Isle of Wight when you travel on the worlds last remaining passenger hovercraft service. The dog friendly operation began in 1965 with the SRN6, a small noisy single engine craft. In 1983 the quieter 80 seater Tenacity model took over. This was replaced in 1990 by the larger 100 seater four engine AP1 Freedom 90 and her sister Double-o-Seven. Built by Hovertravel the Freedom 90 has served the island ever since. But now's the time for her too to be replaced by the 12000TD Solent Flyer and Island Flyer which are seen at the Ryde Hoverport in this ten minute video filmed on September 19th 2017.

The fair at southsea was never open when were waiting for the hovey!

It wasn't open when we visited either. I suppose it was midweek and a bit out of season.

Used to go on this trip in the late 60's as a kid. Are the current hovercraft smaller that the old ones or is my memory playing tricks?

Memory playing tricks, these are a lot larger than the old ones that did this trip. To the best of my memory, larger hovercraft that carried vehicles as well, use to go to France from Ramsgate and Dover.

Pete Halford; The AP1-88/100 craft shown in service in the video is larger than the SRN2’s, SRN5’s and SRN6’s Hovertravel used on this route in the early days however Hovertravel now have two new craft (the ones with the Union Jack fronts shown at Ryde) which are Griffonhoverwork 12000TD’s and are a tad smaller than the AP1-88/100’s. A few years ago there was a BHT130 Hovercraft called Solent Express working this route for a short time and was larger than the craft previously mentioned above, however the largest craft to be used by Hovertravel was the VT1 (built by Vosper-Thornycroft) used in late 1960’s and was Hovertravel’s only Hovercraft to be able to carry both passengers and vehicles so this may be the one you are thinking of. The SRN4’s (the largest passenger Hovercraft in the world) as Andy said operated from Ramsgate to Calais, as well as Dover to Calais and also Dover to Boulogne.

Vt1 wasn't used on the solent.
