He is saying that because he knows these big artists, he signs producers because he can get their beats to the top artists. So he gets money and the producer gets money. It takes time to get find producers and send their beats so he also deserves his cut. What he means about beatstars is that if you don’t know what you’re doing it’s hard and you might not get the fair amount of money you could.
@dugnice

Truth is, if you're green you can be taken unfair advantage of whether it's by beatstars, 808 Mafia or a major label. Not to say anything bad about Southside, but he said he's signed about 40 producers in the past 2 years. Ok, how many of them have major placements and are recognized for them? Truth is, things today are much the same as they were in the 90s and prior. There are "gatekeepers" who have the power to make or break careers and many such people do just that, based on their own personal motivations. I don't think Southside is any exception and that's not a diss.

Ayo my guy, you seem like you know a little about how BeatStars works, could you help me out? I’m an artist. Is the 50/50 pub split non-negotiable for a producer unless it’s an exclusive lease? Or can a producer change the pub split for any of the lease options, and would I as the buyer even know that you did. Like for example, if I were to buy a premium lease for wav and mp3 can you as the producer do an 80/20 in your favor and I wouldn’t even know? They really aren’t. At a certain level the fastest way to make money in a capitalistic system is to take a product that someone else makes, package and market it to a buyer, marking it up in the process. That’s how almost all business works. At a high level this is how producers make generational wealth, you graduate from becoming the source of the product to the middleman. The real issue is how greedy you get with this - Southside is laying out how it can be done where everyone wins, and his method creates a path to where producers who start under him can one day graduate to this level as well. Ideally they’ll build a name for themselves and develop demand that outpaces their ability to create product, restarting the cycle. You can argue he shouldn’t be making money off other people’s product at all but unfortunately that’s the way of the world.

I started making beats back in 1989. Everybody wanted to rap then, but there weren't many beatmakers because the technology was expensive. To get a drum machine, 1 or 2 keyboards, a sampler, and a turntable would set you back a lot of bread. Today, anyone with a laptop and FL can make beats with pre-made loops. I'm not knocking loops, but it's really not your idea because you're basically just doing a remix. Anyway, I thought this was a good interview and Southside's take on BeatStars.

I’m glad the he points out that it’s unwise for him to put his producers in a race to the bottom just to make a couple extra bucks with the low effort loop stuff. If he can hook young talent up with real opportunities and get them to where they’re pulling in big money themselves under his publishing company, he makes more money long run. Sure he could flip stuff quick, get the credit, and make tons of money doing so - but he will make even more taking smaller cuts from an army of mega producers. It’s more beneficial to everyone involved. A huge reason the music industry is in a bad state right now is because everyone wants short term gains and is willing to sacrifice the long game for it. The wise know there’s enough to go around.

The people claiming todays music is has an issue or what not including Southside makes no sense. How can they claim that when they themselves cannot have even a 50% hit ratio of success with all their beats? If the people that claim to know whats wrong with todays music why arent they making hits at a 100% hit ratio??? Till this day no producer in history even has 30% hit ratio let alone 50% because if he did he would be a billionaire easy.

For anyone that’s on here and has used BeatStars a lot, im an artist. Cuz that seems pretty fucked in my opinion, but I would love to hear from anyone🙏

Exclusive rights to use a beat is not a sale of copyright. It's just saying this one producer can use the beat without another producer being sold the same track. Back in the days it was all done like this. You gave a beat to a single artist and negotiated your split. No artist wanted another artist to have their track. Especially with mixtapes coming out every week. You got an album cut and some random done used the same beat on a mixtape... You would be heated. Read your terms and know what's in the contract. Never sell your rights with a leased beat. You're just giving away money because they said they wanted it. You're giving an artist a beat that potentially could have them in clubs performing even at a low level for $4000 a night. Why would you not get your cut of the pub? Your business revenue is just as important as theirs and they have more avenues to make money than the producer. You deserve your portion but need to know how to not give it away. If the deal ain't right, shut it down and be patient for the right deal or create your own situation.

I love Southside but the shit he saying bout selling on BeatStars IS NOT TRUE!!!!!!!! You set your OWN terms when you sell beats on the platform. You can sell beats for as much or as little as you want. This also includes you determining or negotiating your publishing shares. Even if you sell the beat exclusively, YOU’RE STILL ENTITLED TO ROYALTIES. Point blank period.

He's saying beatstars makes it easier for producers to give away too much. Let's be honest dude, the virtual market not much different. The guys selling are guys who give away too much. Yea you set the terms but the guys who sell pretty much give away everything but a credit. This notion that beatstars is making a bunch of guys rich is a farce.
@RobBecTraxxx
@RobBecTraxxx 2 жыл бұрын
@@ktvbeatz5560 Who said it’s “making a bunch of guys rich”? Certainly not I. And don’t tell me what he’s “saying”. Tell me what he “SAID” which was: producers on BeatStars sell their beats but lose their pub in the process…WHICH IS NOT TRUE. Also, BeatStars only provides a platform. No different than TikTok, KZfaq, etc. Some will greatly profit off it. Example: “Old Town Road” was bought on BeatStars and was one of the biggest records of the past decade. Then there will be others who will make chump change IF anything at all. Anyway “giving too much away” is someone doing that on their own, BeatStars the company has nothing to do with someone doing that. There are MANY producers making a living selling and leasing independently on BeatStars (and other outlets). You don’t have to get rich off of it for it to be useful or profitable. I haven’t gotten “rich” but I’ve paid for A MANY, MANY bills and leisure through using the site. It’s all in the individual, not the website itself.

He's wrong about the Beatstars thing though. You actually set up your licenses and when it comes to exclusives, the artist can negotiate with you on the publishing. That producer he knew probably wasn't paying attention and just saw a $1000 paycheck, or maybe he was tricked or thought giving up the pub because its a major artist buying the beat was how things go. Either way that was the producers fault, none of that should fall on Beatstars.

You're better off selling beats to independent artists that'll never "BLOW UP". They may make some noise regionally or go viral, but trying to produce for bigger artists is not really the way anymore. It'll take you 6 months to a year or even a year and months to see a real royalty check if you're getting points on billboard records. This is exclusively in the hip-hop division.
