A Southwest Airlines Boeing B737 performing flight to Austin International was landing on runway 17R when the pilots spotted a person on the runway and tried to avoid the individual.
However the left engine hit the man causing fatal injuries.
Airport Authorities claimed the man was not dressed like an airport worker and did not have any identification on him.

While it's not confirmed yet, it looks like it was likely suicide. I understand that people can be going through some rough times and decide that they need to end it, it sucks, and no one should have to go through that, but killing yourself in a way that gets others involved is just a douche move. Jumping in front of a car/train/plane, you're going to ruin their day and possibly their life, it's hard to overcome the thoughts that you may have killed someone, even if you know you couldn't do anything to stop it.

I had a cokehead step in front of my car going 30, in darkness, and I had to lock up (no anti-lock) and skid violently to a stop, just short of her. The cokehead didn't even flinch. Probably even took $100 of life off my tires even, but the bigger point is my own needless trauma, which I would have carried through life, and only by the luck of superhuman reflexes as my mind first went to denial, and my extreme physical response to locking it up, did I prevent a permanent horror for myself -- and for her. Didn't even flinch. She probably didn't live another two weeks anyway for numerous reasons, her and the cokeheads hanging around cars parked in the road in the night; and I'm sorry to say, that we're better off if that happened -- hopefully not scarring innocent passerbys before they went to heaven.

If he stopped on the taxiway instead of going all the way to the gate as directed then he was suspicious and wanted to consider the issue first at least. It doesn't sound like he knew he hit anyone or he would have likely called the emergency trucks out to take a look. Years ago, while working at Toronto (YYZ) we received a weird call from the tower at 5 am. Two people were walking down the middle of the active runway, so we raced out and grabbed them. They were two skinheads that had gotten stoned and decided that they wanted to look at airplanes, so they climbed over the fences. They were surprisingly mellow, which was lucky, as it was the last hour of our last night shift, and we were exhausted. One of them turned out to be wanted for murder in Montreal, where he’d kicked a guy to death. Weird day. Great channnel!

Rideshare driver here: Just started driving again this week. Only doing airport rides since I live right there and love planes. I face my car towards 17R while I wait for rides and will usually work on some school. Can’t see whole runway but you can see most of the approach and usually the smoke ride up after tires touchdown. I remember seeing this plane land and then thought I heard someone slam a car door. Saw the go around and thought that was off since it’s so slow. Didn’t think anything of it. Picked up a person from that flight and she said they hit something but I didn’t believe her honestly. Thought maybe there was just a crosswind and some turbulence. I learned after I dropped her off what happened. Victor, you are so fast with these - seriously impressed. RIP to the guy. These are strange times.

Hitting a person is not different than hitting a deer, you do not have time to react, they were touching down their job was to stay on the center line of the runway and under control. Many people swerve to miss deer or other animals while driving and leave the roadway, once you do that your chances of death go up ten fold or more. Why this person (an adult remember) was on the runway doesn't matter, they choose to endanger the lives of potentially hundreds of lives thankfully there was only one fatality, the crew did a great job handling the situation..
@vbscript2
@vbscript2 4 жыл бұрын
I would also add that 3,000 lb cars at 30-70 mph are much easier to swerve in than 130,000 lb 737s at 140 mph, which also have much higher CoG and tires that are not meant for steering above taxi speeds on the ground. The car also doesn't have wings filled with fuel that stick out 59 ft from the centerline on each side that risk hitting the ground when swerving.

"Hitting a person is not different than hitting a deer". Uh, yeah, one is a deer and the other is a fellow human being. It's impossible to overstate how different those things are, in particular to a driver or a pilot. One is sad, the other is something you'll bear for the rest of your life. My wife was a SWA Attendant (Years Ago) and we once took pictures of her sitting in the leading edge of the intake naselle of her 737 she had been working. She's only 5' 4" and the engine intake on a 737 is close enough to the ground that she got into the intake like she would getting up on a stool. An epic picture that hangs in her office next to her SWA certs and memorbilia. Looks like the runway man caught the edge of the nacelle with his head and or shoulders and his body was slammed against the side of the engine housing as he spun off. My theory is he was running toward the landing aircraft hopeing to jump into the left (port) engine intake and almost made it! Hard to judge the intersecting speed of a 200 mph airplane, don't ya know? I seriously doubt and passengers ever knew, or saw what happened and the plane is moving pretty fast on landing (somewhere in the 150 to 200mph range) and there are no forward facing windows for the passengers to see ahead. If anything, it was just a flash and maybe a thump like the tires touching down on the runway. I'd say it was suicide by jet engine! Yech! (Maybe an Aloha Snackbar Attempt??) A stupid way to die. I'ts not like you can't hear a jet coming. Lot of wind noise in front of them. And the engines whistling at near idle on approach. I use to work next to the runways of a major airport. They never snuck up on us. Anyway, my 2 cents!

I am recently retired from work as an adjuster for a major insurance company. Back in the late 1980’s we handled a wrongful death claim made by the surviving mother of a young man who ran out onto a freeway (from bushes in the median) directly in front of one of our insureds. The guy was high on drugs and was totally naked. When our insured (middle aged lady) hit the man she couldn’t see anything due to the body landing on her windshield. She was traumatized beyond belief. And yes, the mother of the deceased man actually sued HER! The jury came back after about 15 minutes and asked the judge if they could award damages to our insured.

The pilot has to keep going straight once on the ground or the plane will likely skid out of control and risk the lives of all aboard. They didn't even see the guy early enough to get back into the air, so they could do absolutely nothing to avoid it. Furthermore, they didn't even know that the nacelle had hit the guy. For all we know, the man may have intentionally positioned himself in front of the oncoming nacelle. It's either intentional suicide, or impairment from drugs, and/or alcohol bringing on suicidal impulses, or just life threatening behavior. Many years ago a drunk driving the wrong way on a divided roadway ended up directly in front of me. I braked as hard as I could, and veered to my right, I'm in America. The drunk also veered, unfortunately, he veered to his left, and we hit head on. He was in a Volkswagen Beatle, I was in a heavy step van. I wasn't scratched. He was nearly killed. The worst part was that he had a female passenger who was also seriously hurt. Neither of them died, but I could not have done anything to avoid it. Had both of them been killed, I would have thought about it for a while, but ultimately, it was not my fault, I did everything I could have done, and the driver did multiple things wrong that caused the collision. I have deeper twinges of guilt about extremely minor things that I have actually done wrong, and I have no feelings of guilt over that incident.

Exactly! Though the pilot did turn in a safe manner, if the engine cowling didn't kill him, the landing gear or trailing edge (with flaps down of course) certainly would have. I'm an aircraft mechanic who has worked on SW's fleet of 73s, so I know those parts of the plane would have killed him. The pilot had to think of his px's, unlike the disturbed individual that walked in their path.

A few weeks later he was standing on the flight line when another one walked right by him and passed through the spinning propeller arc without even being touched. Turns out that a group of Native American Indians believed it was some sort of spiritual test of bravery, fate, or something to walk through an idling engine's propeller without showing any fear. So doing something suicidal doesn't always mean you want to die! Base jumpers come to mind : ) 36 years service and 3 wars, the man was just full of stores.

One pilot of a P-47 actually crunched the numbers as to how much time and space there is between the blades as they are moving. Turns out in the P-47s case there roughly a six inch or so gap big enough for someone to pass through as the plane is moving. He did this because it had been nagging him as to how a german somehow survive his freakishly low pass. The German was lucky and I'd imagine probably wet him self after surviving that.

Feel bad for the crew and the person's family. Thankfully it appears the person didn't get inside the inlet, that would've be very expensive for Southwest to have to also rebuild the powerplant in addition to repairing the inlet. I just don't understand why do people have to involve innocent people when they decide to do these types of things!

If they were thinking logically then they probably wouldn't kill themselves, much less involve innocent people, but if you're suicidal then you're clearly not thinking logically

I was told by an airman back in high-school that they had a plane land and it hit a dog on the run way, nothing left bigger then your hand ✋. When did this happen ?

it looks like this person just struck the side of the engine nacelle and not getting ingested into the engine. There was an aircraft tech who got sucked into a jet engine and there was blood splatter everywhere in front/inside/behind the engine and it doesn't look like the case this time.

Great Job Victor, your channel is amazing. As for the crew, they did everything right, and I doubt they will lose too much sleep. They're trained pros who do there job and sometimes events happen that are just out of their control. The crews responsibility is to the 100 or so (or these days, 7) pax in the back of the jet.

That seems rather callous, I think the most seasoned professional would still be traumatized by that. Yes he carries on steadily when it happens but it would hit him later just like anyone. I hope the airline got him hooked up with a therapist or grief counselor if he needed it.

You can`t be serious. Protecting human life inside or outside the aircraft is top priority. This crew is in shock for certain.

@@mambagr Uh, no I'm dead serious. Get it. And come on a grief counselor? Stuff happens, and this guy very likely was trying to commit suicide. There was nothing the crew could've done to avoid it. Swerving at high speed isn't really an option, and endangers the pax. They went to the hotel that night, had a beer, and said, "Man, rough day, huh? Yup. What time is the shuttle in the morning?" Grief counselor. Holy cow.

@@sb859 Okay, if you were driving in your car and accidentally hit a person that ended up killing them, would you just go to a bar afterwards and drink the incident off? Heck no. You'd be an emotional wreck for the next few months at least, more like a few years, because you *killed* someone, suicide or not. And a pedestrian getting killed by a car is far more likely than getting killed by a fast-moving airplane. I don't know, but I bet Captain Sullenberger had quite a bit of counselling after his famous "water landing" in the Hudson. And no one died there, but the emotional toll that a very unusual incident like that takes on a pilot can be huge. It's not something that they are expecting at all. For many, including the Hudson River incident, there is a lot of adrenaline that later comes crashing down. True, there wasn't much that this Southwest crew could do, especially once the wheels touched pavement, but this is going to emotionally scar them for a long time because it happened unexpectedly with/to them.

@@HeidiKohne Hitting someone "accidentally" with a car has nothing to do with this incident. We can disagree, and that's OK. As a professional aviator myself for over three decades, you accept that mishaps may and will occur, just as surgeons know some of their patients will die on the table. You don't see them running to a shrink for counseling for months on end do you? Landing a plane, on centerline, at 130 knots, at night, gives you no room to "avoid" hitting a person that you see for a "flash" of a second. Not everyone is as fragile as you may be, or as "callous" as I may be. But part of being a professional is not being an emotional wreck if someone dies due to zero fault of your own.
