A few weeks back, a Southwest Airlines pilot was caught on an open mic, ranting about the people in the state he was flying out from. How can something like this happen, what happens if you are caught doing something like this and how has the airline responded?
This will all be covered in this short "Mentour React" video. Enjoy!

This was a perfect response in my opinion. We dealt with hot mics on a regular on our UH-1's when I was in the Army. None of us (at least our crews) ever wanted to make the uniform, ourselves, and certainly not our country look bad as we were a US Army unit stationed in Frankfurt. @@remigiochilaule1961 he was departing San Jose The time and date of the recording is known. It is very likely that prior to departing San Jose he arrived into San Jose. By listening to the time frame before this flight at San Jose you can obtain the flight number he operated prior to the flight in question. You could then lookup that flight number and find the departure airport for that flight. That helps establish what other frequencies to expect to find the same crew (could be either pilot speaking). Liveatc has archives of many frequencies. It would not be difficult to do this, but very time consuming. The airline and FAA can do it much easier just knowing his schedule and having hopefully more efficient methods of retrieving recordings.

Good analysis Mentour Pilot. I occasionally had an F/O that started on a political rant but I gently shut them down. I don't care if you're left or right but if you're at the margins it concerns me, especially if you can't forget about it in the cockpit. When I was an F/O, I had a Captain who was extremely conservative, Clinton had just won and he was besides himself. If ATC said turn 30 left for traffic he would start "damned government controlling us". I had a chat with him and he stopped it. As a pilot and an American this is embarrassing.

@darthkarl99
@darthkarl99 2 жыл бұрын
@@vk2ig As an outsider looking in it's not a suprise once you understand the fundamental principles of nation states and then look at how the US is organised. Short Version: All nation states are tribal. Not in the negetive sense of a bunch of thugs that you often here. but in it's most basic and original form. A group of people agreeing to band together for their mutual benefit. The modern nation state is a lot more complex than that simple description makes it sound, but all of that complexity is a result of and an expression of that basic underlying principle. That shared benefit and what they're banding together against is ultimately defined by a mixture of legal codes, concepts of social acceptability, and what we today call foreign policy, but is really just interactions with other tribal entities. All 3 of these also influence each other and change and evolve over time as a result. But in turn they create a shared identity. it's this shared identity that fosters a sense and a degree of unity. No two people in the entity are going to agree on exactly how to achieve results that benefit the tribe. But they'll generally agree on most of what is and is not a benefit to the tribe because they share such similar legal, social, and foreign codes. The issue in the US is that vast swathes of the legal code are different between different states. That in part creates and in part maintains very different social standards. And that drives different states, (especially those separated by significant distances), to take largely opposed ideologies. Each state is effectively it's own tribe and the combined legal/social standards of the state define the tribe identity. And inevitably this creates what amounts to foreign policy interactions of a negetive or positive nature between them. The only reason they're not in cold or hot wars with each other constantly is the existence of the federal government as that becomes the medium through which they act towards each other and the powers given to it mean the states can't easily defy it. But that combined with party politics means that depending on who's controlling what in it at the moment many states, (and by extension the majority of inhabitants within those states), view the Federal government as either an allied or enemy tribe. hey treat it in effect as another nation state who they're either friendly with or an enemy of. And in case your asking, "why doesn't it turn into a civil war every 5 minutes", the answer is a combination of the grievances not yet being enough to overcome their unwillingness to challenge the power of the federal government and their collective fear of external threats. A normal nation state is unified by a shared identity, the US is united more by an unwillingness to oppose the stronger federal government and fear of outside threats.

I and a partner had a rant that we unknowingly put out over the air after a briefing from our admin staff that I was less than impressed with. Fortunately, the dispatcher covered most of it by keying the main base station radio to block most of the transition. It happened because the mic was on the seat and a bag was put on it, activating the mic button. The only way we knew was this loud beeping started coming from the radio and I looked down to see the red transmit light was on! We later went to one of our inactive channels and held down the mic to see how long it took before that warning tone came over the radio. It was 90 seconds. This was in the mid-90s with a Motorola police radio. I bought that dispatcher dinner though. She saved our asses by blocking the transmission as soon as she realized what we were talking about. I've heard plenty of other hot/open mic incidents from others over the years. Many rather embarrassing and of a personal nature (like a coworker of mine going off on a tirade to his partner about his soon to be ex-wife and things like that). People usually don't live those things down, but it makes for great stories and lessons for new officers about what not to do! Lol.

I've read comments here where some have said they are concerned that the pilot sounded agitated before he was flying. I actually had to wait on a flight that was over 2 hours late and the reason they told us the plane was late was because of a mechanical problem repair. (Great). When the flight finally got to the airport, the two pilots got off the plane one of them went over to the check-in desk and was getting something off the printer, the other one walked just a little bit out of the way like over to the next gate and got on his cell phone and was having some kind of argument with what I assumed to be his wife or partner. They were arguing about their child. It just reminded me of different sorts of arguments I've had with my husband on the phone because he works out of town. This pilot was raising his voice and saying things like I'm 15 hundred miles away... I'm not going to be home until Wednesday, so I just want to know, what you want me to do about it right now. I couldn't tell what the person on the other end was saying but you could definitely hear yelling and I thought to myself my goodness don't upset my pilot before he's got to get on this plane and fly it. Then you realize, Hey, they're just people like you and I are, they're going to be frustrated and agitated certain days. How many of us have gone to work mad or stresses and complained on the job? Now if he's not supposed to be having any other conversation at that point then that's a different story and he's definitely was breaking the rules but I had a chuckle too I mean we're all less than perfect that's us Catholics get down on our knees every Sunday and make our confession in front of each other that says, " I mess up from time to time". Actually when my daughter was in the 4th grade she and several other girl students from her grade who had the top grades got to go have dinner at the nuns house and that was a really special treat for them. She came home with her best friend Anna and they were still in the secrets to us parents she said she opened the fridge they got to look inside their fridge and they had beer in the refrigerator and hot sauce....*and yogurt. The recycling bin was overflowing so much so that they had recyclable stuff on the outside of the bin on the floor in the kitchen. I had to tell her even nuns are less than perfect.

For me, as a passenger, I actually find this very scary to hear !! I don't want the pilots to be feeling angry and impatient about life. I want them feeling calm, focused and enjoying their work :) And nowadays, you almost never meet your pilots, or even see them. The cockpit doors are closed. Just have to say - from an "in the US" perspective, the technical description of "rolling coal" is hilarious and on-point. Really, the whole point of "rolling coal" is political/cultural spite against people who raise environmental concerns, and that's the only way it "makes sense" to anyone. Hearing it described technically ("I'm making my engine malfunction and be extra inefficient") deflates all of that and just leaves people thinking "....what? why?" - which is the appropriate reaction.

I trained at a controlled airport and one time doing solo circuit work in a C172 my instructor was flying with another student in a C150 in front of me... on the second go around I had to back off the throttle on climb out a bit and asked the tower to ask Jose ( my instructor) to pedal faster. He laughed (atc) and said he heard me I then offered to widen my circuit for spacing and he okayed that and thanked me. That is operational fun on the radio. Years later I was flying a Navajo into Detroit YIP and ATC asked me to keep my speed up due to jet traffic behind me I said " will do I'm pedaling as fast as I can " got a laugh and do your best from tower.. greased the landing and pulled off at the second taxiway... called clear and the jet touched down about a minute later.

I want to mention 2 things: 1- The pilot shouldn't appear professional, they have to BE professional. If this pilot gave an impression of lack of professionalism is not because of the hot mic but because he was unprofessional. If all we could here was "Flaps, set, trim, set, take-off check complete" then it would have not be unprofessional. The reason why the pilot should not do these rants is NOT because he may be caught by on hot mic but because he was being dangerous (although the risk of hot mic could be a good reason not to rant like this even a cruise where it is allowed). 2- I would have loved to hear the other pilot saying "hey Joe, we are supposed to be sterile here". It doesn't seem to be frequent that pilots keep them honest each other frequently enough, and frequently enough should be ALWAYS (in every occasion where one pilot is deviating from policies and procedures for reasons other than safety).
@valeriavagapova
@valeriavagapova 3 жыл бұрын
Your second point is actually very interesting, admittedly I don't know much about flight industry, but I do wonder why the other pilot didn't say anything. Rolling coal isn't tricking anything. It's injecting a charge of diesel fuel that under higher boost levels can be consumed by the combustion process and secondarily, cool the cylinder temperatures. It's the same as enriching a piston aircraft engine on takeoff and landing power levels. Rolling coal will drop the EGT's by close to 200 degrees Celsius.Your CFM56 engine does the same thing with take off power which is why they will emit black smoke in the exhaust trail. In street driven vehicles, rolling coat is done to show off or to harass people with the cloud of black smoke.
@dipling.pitzler7650
@dipling.pitzler7650 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is tricking the engine beyond reasonable enriching , the combustion process is highly unefficient with partially burned fuel passing through the exhaust system. Damage to the engine by abrasive carbon particles and clogging of emission control systems is highly probable.

Petter, as a training captain I’m sure you will be aware of the CRM implications of this behaviour. Not only was that pilot unprofessional and violated FAA regulations on sterile cockpit operations, he was being politically aggressive, and demeaning to a large proportion of the US population. We have no idea about the political leanings of his colleague on the flight, and how this may have impacted his or her willingness to speak up should a further safety issue arise on the flight that warrants intervention. Clearly this pilot’s colleague was not prepared to intervene in this breach of the regulations, so CRM was already compromised. I know many people will find that funny. I for one never want to be in the back with someone flying who thinks that kind of behaviour is appropriate. And that has nothing to do with my political inclination of where I live, it’s about a good, working, safety culture.

We had an amusing "hot mic" incident in Winnipeg a few years ago. One hot summer evening the police helicopter was flying over the west end of the inner city when the local residents were treated to some rather puerile banter. Seems they'd inadvertently left the mic on for the public address speaker on the chopper. A friend of my brother's happened to be in her backyard, and tweeted it about it. For the next few days she was getting calls from media from all over the place, including the BBC. I'm not sure what all they wanted to ask her; beyond "yeah, the cops were making blow job jokes on an open mic" what more is there to say?

I have flown Southwest for many years. What I found likable about the experience is "everyone gets treated the same", "everyone gets the same seat"... If I was operations/HR for Southwest the conversation with the "talking head" would be short, to the point, and security would escort him out the door. There is quite a bit to unpack underneath the rant... If you have that kind of time. I don't want the ranter in the cockpit, I don't want him on the highway "rolling coal", I don't want to be seated behind him at a sporting venue. Get a couple of beers in him and he becomes a "big man". I've seen 66 years of it and it never changes. I hope he gets some help. If Southwest offered him help before showing giving him the boot, the ranter got more then he deserves.

On the ground, you might clip a wing, lose a wheel, or get somebody fired. In the air, the same magnitude of mistake will kill 200 people. (Americans always say Melbourne like that) "Well Bob the first thing I'm gonna do is go somewhere and take a great big dump. Then I'm going to pick up that hostie who came on board in Honolulu, take her to a hotel room, and give it too her from every angle possible." Everyone on the plane heard this, including the hostie. And she wasn't happy. She stormed up towards to cockpit, flames shooting out of her ears. She was gonna give him a right piece of her mind. But as she ran past me, she tripped over. As she was getting to her feet, I looked down at her and said, "There's no need to hurry love, he's gotta take a dump first". True story.
