Something is way off here. Modern commercial jets DO NOT descend to 400' AGL "To try and get under the weather". Even for instrument landings there are published minimum visibility rules as well as minimum altitude rules for the approach and landing. Known as "Minimums" that are published for every airport on the approach plates that this aircraft would be capable of landing at. It makes perfect sense that the aircraft circled in a holding pattern hoping for a change in conditions, dropping down to 400' AGL IS NOT an approved procedure for ANY airline. I am not sure who that "former pilot" was trying to gaslight, but the ONLY time a commercial jet would be justified being at 400' AGL is during the last 60 seconds or so before touchdown of an actual landing approach.

It’s called descending to minimums on an instrument approach.

CAT I: The basic form of ILS, requiring a decision height of at least 200 feet and a runway visual range of 550 meters or more. CAT II and CAT III: These offer lower minimums for visibility and decision height, with CAT III allowing for almost zero visibility landings in some cases.

Well then, if this is correct, it is verifiable. Where do we go to see that verification? We know what the aircraft was and the airport is was flying into - what are the actual listed minimums that you mentioned and where can we see them for ourselves?

Hey Dummy most ILS do descend to 200 FT AGL and when any part of the runway is in insight (approach light, PAPI lights) are in sight we can descend another 100 FT.

@@donc9751 An ILS approach has a Decision Height, and if the runway is not visible when the aircraft reaches that height, the landing must be rejected. Standard Decision Height for a CAT 1 ILS is 200ft above the ground, which is just low enough for ignorant news people to spin a fantasy fiction yarn about an aircraft "coming within feet of slamming into the ocean", when in fact nothing happened at all. Weather was poor so they went back.

So the reporter says it was a less experienced officer inadvertently pushing the column down and dropping the speed... then you have this pilot come on and say they were just going down to 400 feet to find the runway and then they did a go around... those things are incongruent with each other, right? Am I missing something?

sounds like it was his fault. people always want to blame the plane but its always the airline 99 percent of the time. Boeing gets the blame in this video, but its BS. These airlines don't do proper maintenance because it saves money to cut corners, they don't keep pilots up on new technology or new FAA procedures. They hire very inexperienced pilots and crew because it's cheaper. If you only knew the corners airlines cut to make a profit you'd never fly again.

People... 737 / 757 / 767 pilot here. It appears that this flight flew an instrument approach with a 400 foot minimum altitude, and upon reaching that minimum, didn't have the required visibility conditions, and flew a missed approach. No big deal. Maybe the crew was a bit rough in handling the plane, but this is no "diving at the ocean."

Have you ever flown into Lihue? It's absolutely terrifying on good days. The airport is at the top of 100 foot sheer cliffs, the approaches are both over the ocean, and the runways are shorter than FAA standards. Airplanes have to come in low and slow, and if there are any adverse weather conditions, you basically just close your eyes and pray. The passengers who complained probably weren't locals, and they were expecting to land at a modern airport.

This story did a nice job convoluting several different completely unrelated airline incidents and summing it up that they were all Boeing aircraft. Nonsense. If the airlines can't fly all the way down to "minimums", which is the lowest FAA approved altitude they can descend to in order to visually spot the runway for landing before "going around" to try again, then airline passengers should be prepared to only fly on clear and cloud free days. That would reduce flights by about 75%.

We have conflicting stories here. Competent journalism requires getting off your behind and resolving the conflict in the accounts, not just playing the Boeing card to get cheers from the rubes.

The explanation is total bs. Your flying a modern aircraft. Your flying via waypoints right down to the runway. If you don’t see the runway at minimums you AUTOMATICALLY do a go around. You do not just “drop down” to 400 ft for a look see. There’s way more to this story.

Engineers, your huge charter planes are way too safe compared to makeshift boats ! Terrain alert really ! Close Airbus and Boeing !

That 'expert' was gaslighting.... the problem seems to have been the rapid decent from 4,000 feet down to only 400 feet within one minute, not the acceleration and climb out. Wow, what a slick talker.

I wont fly until we have a competent secretary of transportation. Weve just seen too many plane, train, and ship "mishaps". The connecting dots lead back to incompetent leadership as well as an industry willing to put money ahead of safety.
