I can sympathise. I have this complete kit waiting in my stash for work to start! Your series has been an eye opener although I knew after buying the John Mckay book that rough seas were ahead! Modification and problem solving is going to be a battle to say the least. I first experienced a problem when I built my first wooden ship model of HMS Bounty. The hull frames were the wrong shape and being a novice I thought it was my errors. That 1/50 scale model sat gathering dust for 10 years before I had another look at it! I stripped it back and virtually started from scratch correcting the hull shape and added new double planking. It looks fine now and worth the effort. Your build will be invaluable to me in trying to achieve a reasonable model at some point. I am sure that you will crack the scale problem if not already!!! Keep at it!😉

Hi Johnny, Thanks for your comments, had I not bought the book by John Mckay, i would have been none the wiser, but it is a great reference with so much detail, Once ive finished this build im seriously thinking about Scratch building it from the book, I have already contacted the Author with regards scale drawings which he can supply. Its just a shame that DeAgostini don't do the model justice, it could be an amazing model, but I guess like most companies they are only interested in maximising profits, no concern for authenticity or quality. with regards the scale issue, i may have an idea to make it a bit better ;-)

Hello G Kip! I am in the process of building a heavily bashed HMS Sovereign of the Seas base on the DeAgostini frame also. This includes interior decks and details. Come join us at the Ships of Scale model building forum and check out my build. I would like to see you there !

Hi Darvis, Firstly your model looks amazing, really puts mine to shame, I was considering a scratch build using John Mckays book, after finishing the DeAgostini mess, but after reading some of the comments on your posts, doesn't look like that's a good idea.

@@g-kip Thank you sir! After binge watching your videos, it's clear you can enhance your model to make it much better. McKay has a lot of incorrect information, but the artwork is great. Frank Fox, an expert in 17th century ships, warns not to use McKay for constructing a model in regard to the ship hull structure, particularly the square tuck stern and the framing. You can do far better using your own research. The DeAgostini kits are for beginners, which I am, although my fabricated skills were gained in other hobbies, so scratch building came pretty soon after starting the build. Come hang out with us on SoS! We'd love to see your builds!

Hi, I have build a few woodern ship models kits and they all can be challenging, but you soon get to like the way some manufacturers build their kits and I tried to stick with them. So my big question is what was the overall cost of this model kit. Kind regards Davd Porter
@g-kip
@g-kip 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave the Kit is just under £800, however the cost of this model would exceed that as I have replaced a number of parts (due to poor quality) and added additions not in the kit

As an experienced modler 40+ years who would like an accurate model when finished, desires a difficult endeavor, has built 5 ship models, all without kits, What kit would you reccomend? $$ not important. Plenty of time and money

The Caldercraft HMS Victory is outstanding. Not cheap and at 138cm long will be fun finding somewhere to display it.

Hi Tom, you are definitely a more experienced modler than I am (Be nice to see some of your builds), I'm only on my third and no scratch builds, Having built kits from Artisan Latino and Constructo (whom I think have closed), both of these manufacturers provided quality parts. but prior to this build I had not done anything in the way of research about the model I was building so as to how accurate they were I don't know. Not sure if you have seen John McKays book Sovereign of the seas 1637, (I do include some of the images in my videos) it is packed with all the details needed to complete a scratch build of the ship, (Scale images are available from the Author), Im considering doing this as my next project, but on a slightly larger scale than the current model, and as a cut away so that the internal decks can be seen, which allows for a more detailed model. Sorry I cant suggest a kit, but Im sure some of the viewers maybe able to.

Hi, had the same problems with H.M.S.Victory from the same company, never finished it, but if i had it would have looked like it had just come from battle, don't buy anything from Deagostini anymore decided to scratch build.

Hi Jean, I've learnt my lesson, I'm thinking of scratch building the ship as I really like it lots of history

Yup. I feel you. The model is disappointing to me also, hence it took me 2 yrs to finish the hull, and last year i did about 4 months, having raised the masts and started rigging. I am waiting for a third second wind to move on. I have allready come to terms that measurements are wrong. But then again, being a modeller of sorts, one will have to get creative. Still, like the stuff you do.

Hi Martin, Thanks, Its definitely not the best kit I have done, but to be honest prior to this model I had never really researched the model I was Building, whilst it has made it more fun it highlights the short comings of the kit, You should have no issues sorting yours out, you've been giving me great advice, and ideas to try and I appreciate the input you have made.

Considering the high price of the model, what they are providing is very poor. I'm not sure I have ever seen a model with so many problems and inaccuracies. I've decided not to purchase any Deagostini kits. Instead I have just ordered the Caldercraft HMS Victory , which although roughly the same price it gets rave reviews on sites like Ships of Scale for accuracy and quality of materials and parts. It's a huge kit at 138cm in length but should get a few years of enjoyment out of the build.

Hi Greg, I totally agree, the model is over priced, poor quality, and badly researched, I looked at the Caldercraft Victory, they do a couple of different versions I believe, the thing that put me off was the lack of sails ( in all the images I saw), but guess thats fairly easy to rectify. Looks like your going to be pushing the building slip to its limits size wise. (Did you manage to sort out some bolts), would love to find out your views on the kit when you get it.

@@g-kip yes , I managed to find some longer bolts which work perfectly. The Trinidad is now sitting in it perfectly 😀 Although the Caldercraft Victory doesn't come with sales there is an aftermarket set you can buy for a reasonable price , I ordered this and the admiralty paint set and no less than 3 Victory reference books lol Before that though I have the Trinidad to finish and have just ordered the La Candalaria from Occre.
@g-kip
@g-kip 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, your going to be busy, the Trinidad is that Artisan Latino?, La Candalaria is a nice looking model, very reasonable price too. Do you build more than one at once? or finish one then move onto the next
@GregWilson635
@GregWilson635 2 жыл бұрын
@@g-kip the Trinidad is from Occre and at 125cm long is taking a while. May not have been the best choice of a first wooden ship model 😉 although it's not perfect I'm happy with it and am learning from my mistakes. I only do the one model at a time as my work space isn't huge and I'd rather finish before I move on to the next

Strange I must have an updated kit, bought 2 1/2 years ago? Many of the parts in your vids are totally different in my kit! You know it might just be some fakes were made and advertised and sold under a named brand. Sorry guys and gals but it seems you have been duped.

Hi Mark, This is a kit from deagostini, modelspace, you obviously missed the title of the video, it is a customised build, with many parts reworked, replaced in order to make it a more realistic representation of the ship, rather than the joke that deagostini have produced.
