Direct from South Africa, the Grammy Award winning Soweto Gospel Choir weaves a rich tapestry of harmonies and rhythms from African gospel, soulful spirituals and American popular music. Songs of the Free, an exuberant program performed in six of South Africa’s 11 languages, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the late Nelson Mandela’s birth.

Folks, this song is about a train (the train that would take people off to work, some of who didnt return). While the group is gospel, this is a well known traditional song

This brings tears to my eyes. The first time I visited my family in Cape Town, we went to boulder beach. My brother was wearing an Evansville college tee shirt our baby sitter gave him. We started walking to the beach and there was a choir singing on the walk down and one of the guys was wearing an Evansville T shirt. We were so surprised to see it so many thousands of miles away from Indiana and he was surprised to. We put our walk to the beach on pause and just listened to the choir for at least 20 minutes. I’ll never forget the sound of their voices. I don’t believe in god, I never have, but their voices were so pure and so angelic it made me wonder. I truly believe that’s the most beautiful sound on our planet. I’m grateful that Ladysmith Black Mambazo introduced that sound to so many ears. This choir is amazing. Thank you.

I found the Soweto Choir when I was a 10 year old kid watching The Power of ONE in the 80s for telhe first time. The soundtrack is unbeatable.
