The world is facing a food crisis. The UN World Food Programme warned that "a record 345 million acutely hungry people are marching to the brink of starvation”.
Soybeans are the world's most traded crop, a key ingredient in most animal feed. Poultry and pig farmers everywhere depend on soybean meal to grow their livestock.
In Asia, soy is also a cheap protein source. Tempeh and Tofu are an important part of Indonesia’s diet, especially among the poor.
But soy prices have skyrocketed, reaching record levels in the second half of 2022. Drought in South America, and supply chain issues, are wreaking havoc on soy production. Farmers in places like Vietnam have felt the pinch of rising prices.
China, the world’s biggest soy importer by far, is treating the soy issue as a food security problem. The country wants to boost domestic production, but this could prove a difficult task.
And looming on the horizon, climate change could spell trouble for soy farmers.

This reportage is inaccurate, they said that Brazil and Argentina have deforested the Amazon to plant soybeans, first of all, Argentina has no Amazon rainforest, and second it's myth that Brazil is killing the forest to plant soy, most of the area used to plant soy in Brazil is not even close to the Amazon basin at all. Brazil is a very big country and it only uses about 9% of their territory to plant crops, so they still have plenty of room to grown, they don't need to deforest the Amazon, also most of the soil in the forest is actually not very good to growing crops and need a lot of preparation which is expensive.

soy is garbage food for humans and livestock. feeding livestock a soy based diet is a good way to REQUIRE the supplementation of antibiotics because the animals are incredibly malnourished. if they didn't live unnaturally short lives (like 1/10 their natural lifespan if that), they'd be plagued with disease stemming from the malnutrition. beans are a low fat food source. everybody knows that. why then is soy oil the #1 oil in food manufacturing? Subsides people... freaking subsidies lol. derp derp

I question the fairness of rising costs of soybean byproducts being sold to the pig farmer. Is the price hike not already being borne by the tofu purchaser? I would expect there aren't that many buyers of these byproducts AND the farmer is providing some service to the tofu factory by providing a consistent means of getting rid of the garbage byproduct
@gilagila100
@gilagila100 Жыл бұрын
It's a simple matter of business and financial considerations. If the increase cost of soya bean is adsorbed fully by the manufacturer, they may have to increase the price of their product or suffer reduced profit. However, if some of the cost can be covered by the sales of the byproduct, it would be common sense to do so. I doubt the manufacturer would offload all of the increased cost into the sales of the byproducts, which would easily priced them out of the byproducts market but passing some of the cost over would be expected.

43:10 While these pictures are accurate and important, it's important to note that the "inedible" portions of pork, as well as its waste feces, are fertilizer, so the limiting factors become how to sanitize the waste and moving it back to the soybean farm. Sure it costs more, but all it takes is an oven at 145F for 45 minutes, the problem is that you need a long cycle oven that's over 100 feet long on a slow conveyor belt to move it in a continuous process. Similar complaints have been made about each dairy cow producing 5 gallons of feces per day here in the US, but that's wasted fuel for anaerobic digestion (aka natural gas production). Anywhere in the world recycling feces into usable farm inputs are profitable, the main problems are a lack of funding and a lack of political will.
@someguy2135
@someguy2135 Жыл бұрын
Abundance of fertilizer is not a problem. In fact, the over use of it has caused ocean dead zones and other major problems. The real problem is the detrimental impact of animal agriculture on climate change, wasted fresh water, deforestation, and more. A fully plant based food system would allow at least 30 years for mankind to transition from burning fossil fuels to renewable power sources. Citation of evidence from credible sources on request.

The video showed a feed conversion ratio for the edible meat of pigs as needing 9 times as much feed as produced with that feed. For cows, it is even worse! 18:36 The US government already spends $53 billion a year on crop insurance to make sure that yields do not go down in the long term. As an American appalled by the lack of automation and basic technology in our mass megacorp farming, it appears basic to me that simply changing the farms from fields to aquaponics would likely 5-10x the yields per year, per acre. America's government is a massive food exporter because it's politically extremely valuable to subsidize the production here to make the prices lower everywhere else, but the way that this subsidy system currently operates is shortsighted and downright idiotic.

Great episode. Except you didn't include the use herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilisers to compensate for the degredation of the soil that happens with mono crops. Evidently the heavy reliance of chems for monocropping spoil the natural environment. And if that includes waterways, will likely pollute them too. It's all a terrible cycle that will make matters worse in terms of food security and the environment. The solution really is to curtail meat consumption. The 'whatabboutery' arguement the senior fellow put forward was thoroughly unconvincing, as was his statement that eating meat was nutritionally necessary. Makes me wonder who was sponsoring him to say all that or is he just some old man stuck in an old cultural story. There are so many meat alternative foods in the pipeline, including lab grown meat and precision fermentation, though no mention of them here. I mention them because its important to know that in the future folks will be enjoying meat and the nutrition from meat without animal agrilculture.

The so-called expert claimed that meat is necessary to get all the micro nutrients needed to thrive. Nutritional supplements are cheap and effective. The largest organization of nutrition professionals officially declared- "It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes. Plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable than diets rich in animal products because they use fewer natural resources and are associated with much less environmental damage. *Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and obesity.* Low intake of saturated fat and high intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nuts, and seeds (all rich in fiber and phytochemicals) are characteristics of vegetarian and vegan diets that produce lower total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and better serum glucose control. These factors contribute to reduction of chronic disease. Vegans need reliable sources of vitamin B-12, such as fortified foods or supplements." -Full abstract from the position paper as found on PubMed from the National Institutes of Health Notice the only supplement they mentioned is B12, which does not originate in animals, and a cheap, easy supplement is effective. The health advantages outweigh the inconvenience of a supplement, and is much cheaper overall, as the video demonstrates.

It's not a coincidence that historical uses of soy included fermentation (soy sauce, miso soup). Humans had an uncanny ability to learn how to eat food combinations that are healthy (traditional dishes using pepper and turmeric for example, and it turns out pepper helps turmeric relieve inflammation by preventing the liver from breaking it down as quickly)

I am perplexed. Americans are experiencing dementia, Alzheimers, diabetes, coronary attacks, strokes and more in part due to our over consumption of meat. We are being driven and shaped to perpetually increase our beef consumption in a quest for magical "protein" when in fact our health care costs and disability would be billions of dollars less if we ate less meat. Our social influencers won't allow us to consider eating less meat and living better. My family has raised Angus as well as Hereford cattle, hogs, chicken and fish. Our health is our wealth, I insist on eating in moderation and go many days without any animal product. If America's meat corporations are running its citizens over a cliff in the name of profit, it would be wiser for other countries to investigate health problems in America caused by over consumption of meat and how Americans have been shaped to believe humans can't exist without it.

Just tap India, and West Asia to produce soy, and other products. Countries needs more diversification on agricultural products. Also, push the GMOs seeds to use, that is safe to use.

Ohio used to be one of the most diverse agricultural areas on the planet, growing just about everything. It now produces nothing but corn and soy monocrops on rotation.

India itself had to ban wheat exports, we are not getting much rain now. Most of West Asia does not have anywhere near water available for large scale soy farming.

soy is trash food. DIversiification to soy? YOu've got to be kidding... lol in the US it's all soy and corn. When I was kid, I remember seeing cotton and peanut fields. now i'ts ALL soy or corn. Because they're subsidized. SUB-SI-DIZED DO YOU FRIKIN GET IT

@@timothybaker3303 I doubt soy is trash. Millions of people rely on it for protein. Others rely on feeding life stock which also is used in the food supply chain. (eg soybean is used to feed chicken it's very important in chicken feed without it there will not be any chicken meat farming so to speak.)

One reason Americans eat more meat is about half of the available land is not suitable for crops and is suitable only for grazing animals. Further the inclusion of animal agriculture helps maintain soil fertility reducing fertilizer use and subsequent pollution of waterways. The great plains and mountain west is often not suitable for other than animal agriculture and if fertilizer is reduced for the reduction of inputs it may result in more meat and less grain and soy produced in the USA because of reduced need for irrigation if the land is converted to grazing.
@moors710

the net result will be a cut in exports of grains and soy rather than a decrease in meat production and consumption in the USA

I didn’t know that. I am glad to learn it although, of course, I will confirm it elsewhere. The media and especially KZfaq is filled with vague generalize declarations about how the planet is going to pot and it’s all because of the darn human species. I can understand the average person may not have the energy or ability to research the details. I cannot understand how so many scientists have transformed into PR practitioners.

I used to work on a large farm. We had to sign a secret act, but now it's all over the internet. Roughly a third of the crops were buried each season in huge pits, because if all the produce was put on the market, the farmer would not get a good price for it. He also had supermarkets, they would throw out the good food, in order to take fresh produce. This was one of many farms owned by this man. I want you to multiply that by the thousands of other farmers doing the same thing. It is also well known that much of the food produced in the US cannot be fully consumed by the citizens, so therefore is exported

@@SeattlePioneer-- The USA exports for cash as well, and yes they give free food under the guise of Usaid, when all they are doing is sending spies to invade and destabilize other countries. How good of the US while their own people are joining mile long lines to get free food they cannot afford to buy. How kind of the US to other people while their own are living in cars although they have 2 jobs. How kind of the US while drug addicts are shitting and pissing on every pavement of every city of the USA. Wake up friend, it's all about politics and power, and personal slights

stop using soybean for oil product, start using palm kernel for livestock feeds. Palm oil tree yield 10x more than than soyfield in an acre. it's a no brainer really.

it's about money. american corporations can't grow oil palms ANYWHERE in the contiguous US. But tehy can grow the F out of soy... In the early 90s, monsanto lobbied incredibly effectively to raise import tariffs on palm and coconut oil (tropical oils, again can't grow in the US). This allowed them to manufacture oil from soy at a competitive price (soy is LOW in oil but heavily subsidized). It's disgusting political corruption. All for $$$$. mammon worship

Every human on Earth should be given for free 10 acres of land AND every human needs to grow and raise his/her own animals to feed themselves! Each owner can trade with others to ensure proper nutrition balance since everyone will be growing slightly different food types!

i once helped family plant palm oil trees on a few acres of land. digging the holes by hand, and later building the small fencing using chicken wire to deter wild boars. spreading the fertilizer. collecting the heavy fruits into piles at the end of each row. it's pretty obvious to me you have no idea how hard farming can be. i'd rather work full time on my current software engineering job. i guess my mechanic would prefer working on cars instead of operating a tractor. i mean, with everyone busy farming their own food who will be maintaining tools, roads, clothing, etc? do you think a farmer will have time to maintain youtube servers?

are you ignorant or are you malevolent? most if not all of the soybeans given to animals are of lower class designation. Thus they aren't intended for human consumption. Soybeans that are the 2nd class are only met for chemically processed foods such as Twinkies and such where nutrition doesnt matter (and only certain components of the plants is isolated) and even if it is harmful for human health in the long run it doesn't matter. In short if you intend on feeding 3rd tier animal feed level soybean or even second tier soybeans for direct human consumption (especially in tofu and fermented products) you basically commiting borderline biological terrorism. The designation is given not only based on the cosmetic value of the bushel but also the nutritional content such as but not limited to oil, protein, impurities (most fertilizers used on plants nowadays are so poisonous that if you had an lb of it spread out on your typical quarter acre yard you probably will be poisoned just from the air and other forms of indirect contacts with the substance).
