Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed this! Even the automobiles are now antiques which added to my enjoyment. I suppose the young man with the wooded train whistle is 48 years old now but he has memories he will cherish for years to come.

50.. Still Love it. lol Went to see her up in Portland a few years ago. Got my first ride behind the 4449. We were chasing trains all the time back then.

My brother shot it, wish it was a bit more steady..lol I got to ride behind her about 5 years ago. Made a special trip to Oregon just to see her again. But yea, being a little rail fan at the time was cool:)

I lost my father on that day, a car hit him while walking at night 2 miles from our house. And this year I lost my mom on June 14 in the hospital, her lungs gave out.

That same Whistle ended up getting installed onto 4449's Stablemate the SPandS 700 after that was restored

I got to watch them pull her out of Oaks Park for the freedom train refurbish in '74. I actually have a pic of me in front of her at the Hoyt Street roundhouse on her first steam.

Why didn't they stop for the hotbox detector? Was it because they knew it was a result of steam from the cylinder or something else?

Sam Dickenson yea I think your on the right track... as a kid I was like "oh no!" But it turns out that's pretty normal for steamers. They definitely were not designed for steamers. I did love hearing that though, it was quite exciting at the time. lol

It was on the Southern Pacific Mulford/Coast Line. The Mulford line ("Baby Coast") runs from Oakland to San Jose before transitioning to the Coast Line.. The rest of the action is between San Jose and San Luis Obispo.
