This is one chapter of a 1-hour and 43-minute DVD production. Available on www.cspmovies.com
Great material from 19 sources shot in many locations out west. See FM and ALCO and many rare SP units.
This brings the 1942 to 1975 era on the SP with E, F units and early GP9 and SD9 power. Don’t miss out on the first U- boats. These GE locomotives had some problems. But GE eventually worked their way to the top of the locomotive business by pecking away at EMD.
See the greater San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles environs, Glendale’s old Taylor Yard, Colton Crossing, and many extinct branchlines. See the opening of the new Colton Yard and the building and early days of the Cajon Pass line for the SP and its bypass of Los Angeles for north-south through-traffic.
Passenger and freight trains abound. Special Shasta, Cascade and even Kaiser ore trains from Iron Mountain near the Salton Sea - plus great and extensive Cajon Pass and Tehachapi action and much more.
This is a wealth of vintage SP material - all shot on vintage movie film by former SP employees and many, very savvy railfans.
To quote Railfan & Railroad magazine, “….the quality and depth of the information in the narration is so great. A must for SP fans I would think, as well as students of motive power evolution, use and disposition.”
To quote a review in Model Railroad News, “Smiley, as usual, pulls from unfathomable depths of footage to locate and select delightful pearls of 8 and 16mm footage."
Some Locations:
Oakland and San Jose
San Joaquin Line
Cajon Pass 1967
Tehachapi 1955-1971
Los Angeles area
Taylor Yard 1965
Colton Crossing
Kaiser ore at Ferrum
Santa Paula Branch
Burbank Branch
Cascade and Shasta
And much more...

Growing up I remember UP's daily City of Los Angeles passenger train. Later we moved near SP's City of Industry yard. I have fond memories of just about every one of those SP locomotives. Thanks for the video.

You were lucky to witness first hand a magical time in railroading! Los Angeles was an amazing railroad experience then with so much to soak in.

Thanks again for a very informative narration and fantastic visual depiction of such a fascinating history of western railroading. I am old enough to recall seeing many such scenes in my years growing up, living, and traveling throughout the region.

Your video brought back many great memories of growing up in Southern California in the early 70’s with a railfan father. We spent many hours watching SP, UP and ATSF trains rolling thru local spots like Santa Fe Springs, City of Industry and Whittier Narrows as well as classics-Cajon Pass and Tehachapi. I miss those days and those locomotives. Thanks for the great videos!

I wish somebody would do a good comprehensive video on the Santa Monica Air Line. I grew up in the neighborhood and spent a lot of time on the tracks. Maybe there isn't enough material to do such a thing. There is one out there, but it really doesn't go into the line itself that well.

Last unit of the train shown starting about 0:55 is a Krauss-Maffei ML4000 "series" unit, which is definately part of SP's quest for higher powered locomotives. Is there more on the "Krauts" in this DVD or any of your other productions? Since PIKO recently released a ML4000 "Prototype" locomotive, seeing footage of these pioneer high horsepower locomotives should be of great interest.

And if you're interested in the bigger O scale version, 3rd rail has a nice model of the Krauss Maffei ML4000

The Krauss-Maffei engines were super unique to the SP with only 3 units. Because they were from Germany most of the SP mechanics in Roseville and Taylor yard did not to work on them because they were unfamiliar with their tooling! Eventually, the 3 were rebuilt with Sulzer engines in the 1980's and painted in Daylight Colors. Shown in our SP When DVD D-114!

The Kaiser Units were U30C's built to SP specs.

They were apart of a cancelled SP order of U30Cs that Kaiser Steel bought. SP opted to go head first in purchases of U33Cs instead.

It's a Baltimore and Ohio locomotive (lettered simply B&O), but there isn't enouigh detail for to identify the model or road number. Best guess is a GP40.

@berkeleygang1834 That was. My guess....I thought it said B&O but then I edited my comment and took that out Because I thought it was ridiculous.How would a B&O unit wind up in the mix? Lol
@charlessmileyvideo
@charlessmileyvideo 2 ай бұрын
B&O power did run thru on the SP, but they were rare to see. Usually a wandering GP-40 or GP-30. In later years many "Chessie System" painted units would show up on Sunset Route and continue to Southern California when they weren't turned back at Englewood yard in Houston, Texas!
