Oh wow, I was one of the few Newcastle fans at that match along with my brother and my dad. My dad was apparently mates with an attaché from the British Embassy and he got us visas. We travelled by train but were basically ignored by the border guards who were more interested in a bottle of scotch my dad gave them as a 'gift'. When they scored their second, we feared the worst, but it all got turned around with a magnificent Moncur, Ahrentoft and Foggon goals. The Ujpest fans were very loud, but we never felt threatened or intimidated. And I still fondly remember the trip there and back, even if the team got back well before us.

Thanks for this friendly comment you gave to the video. Unfortunately Újpest stopped writing its great history even in terms of its domestic performance for about a decade now. The old international glory days are even more far away now and may never come back, not in our life to say the least. Good luck to Newcastle in the future.

Thank you this upload to here. I'am a big Újpest fan from hungary, and when this match was I have not lived, but this is the one of the biggest period in the history of Újpest. Újpesti Dózsa is not the original name of the club, but that time when Hungary belongs to the communists , they (communist) renamed lots of Hungaryan football teams names. The genuine name is Újpesti Torna Egylet (in English Újpest Gymnastic Club) and it estabilished in 1885.

This 2 legged final gave rise to a quite incredible statistical quirk. The much respected Bobby Moncur played some 300 competitive games for Newcastle. He scored 3 goals; ALL of them over the 2 legs of this final. Now that is what statisticians call clustering.

I believe he also scored the winner in the famous 4-3 Nottm Forest FA Cup match, but that result was voided.

Alan Foggon - I wonder what went wrong there? Really impressive as a striker at Middlesbrough, but then made no impact at Sunderland and Man Utd. Ended up playing for outfits like Southend and Hartlepool while still only 27 or 28 years old.

The commentator pronounces the name of the Hungarian team as 'Weepest', but the home supporters seem to be chanting something like 'Oozhpest'.
