Our future in space will require immense industry and infrastructure as we colonize out solar system and beyond. But how will those industries affect that colonization, and what form might an interplanetary civilization take from that influence?

He even has a wikepedia page, which this is a condensed version of.

I'm actually in favor of increased influence by the space-industrial complex. :) Heck, we could dedicate, say, half the resources of our military-industrial complex to building a space-industrial complex, and still have the world's most powerful military by far. The Expanse doesn't do a very good job explaining how puny Earth managed to stymy the Belt. Sure Earth out up the initial investment and are greedily demanding perpetual returns. But what kept an entrepreneurial Belter from striking out on his/her own to their own rock and scratching out their own industrial complex? All it takes is a small group of disgruntled workers on Ceres pooling their meagre savings and going out and grabbing a km-scale asteroid. The Earth in the Expanse story universe must have kept Belters on a knife edge. Bad enough to crush any sense of hope. Just good enough not to starve to death. Skilled enough to do the assigned job, un-skilled enough to make striking out unrealistic. A surveillance system ubiquitous enough to notice if Belters started to pool resources and skills among themselves. Earth in the Expanse is being stupid. In their effort to remain top dog in greater humanity Belters were necessarily kept from realizing their potential. When the Belt does manage to escape Earth's iron grip it will be a vastly greater force with a bone to pick. Had Earth been a bit less greedy they could have had a grateful trading partner for whom keeping Earth in splendid luxury would be pocket change.

I think it would be interesting to look into the first steps of space industrialisation, since that is what lies in front of us atm. Like: what are the first requirements that we have to meet in order to build heavy industry in space, how can we foster demand and what is needed to scale at the different steps. What do you think?

@MarsStarcruiser
@MarsStarcruiser 4 жыл бұрын
Dan B And the reality that exponential increase in power generated in martian atmosphere will assist in terraforming it rather than compromising it like it would on Earth. The easier potential for space elevation with conventional technologies making it vastly cheaper to access resource in the asteroid belt, which individual asteroids could theoretically bankrupt/buyout every current Earth based government. Been saying it for awhile now, should the red planet colonies achieve independence and be capable of progeny, its potentially the “Iron Thrown” of the entire solar system.
@boring7823
@boring7823 4 жыл бұрын
It might, it might not. IMO it's likely that there will be many materials that it's significantly easier to make in microgravity. But it's very unclear if they will be useful in quantities significant enough to move major industry to be outside a gravity well. It may be that using a centrifuge for processes that need gravity could be the better choice. OTOH, it could be cheaper to do that manufacturing on a moon and launch the product into orbit. Yet another possibility is that some sort of high strength composite cannot be reasonably made under gravity in which case other stuff might move beside it even if it's a right pain to centrifuge it in zero-G. It's all a question of economics, important products and "why didn't I think of that" ideas. This is all SFIA near term of course. In the long term Mars surface just doesn't have the space.
@MarsStarcruiser
@MarsStarcruiser 4 жыл бұрын
Robert de Bath By then, martians could have control of entire asteroid belt and be building the necessary infrastructure to consolidate much of that belt into oneil cylinder production. Because automation per capita will be high, energy production per capita will be high as well, far more need up front for martians to set up orbital mirrors and even the beginnings of the dyson swarm as well. Earth is too habitable and too homeostatic, and likely will not progress even at 1/10th the technological rate as a colony almost fully composed of scientist and engineers, free of the same level drama and distractions as Earth life. All those things SFIA talks about doing, may never happen under Earth direction because a simple political climate change, funding cut is all thats needed for such projects to end while an Elon colony... these advancements are always in perpetual demand. Edit: I get what you say about not enough space but thats in the long term. No planet is enough when we start to get on that K-2 and K-3 scale.

I would like to see warp drive and 1.000.000 drones working on such negastructures. But all we are going to see is a Big Falking Rochet going around our solar sistem, at best.

Could colonization off Earth ever exceed the (Birth minus Death) rate of Earth? Might compare to shipping the most important people (or most dangerous) to Botney Bay.

I was about to say, " you put your supply as close to your customers as possible" Then you said it in your own words. Excellent analysis Issac. The "Troy Rising" books have a really interesting perspective on how humanity could rapidly expand into our solar system, using a plot device of a small number of key technologies provided by an alien race. It focuses on making mirrors in space using solar energy, and in turn using those mirrors to make more mirrors and then making hollow space habitats. Requiring highly accurate space positioning systems, and AIs. I will not defend the primary plot, but the ideas explored about how a small number of key technologies could allow humanity to very rapidly build space habitats and colonize our solar system.
