Founded in 2019 by President Donald Trump, the United States Space Force is the newest branch of the US military. Since then it has been met with jokes, misunderstanding, and even a satirical series on Netflix.
Insider visited Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora, Colorado, to learn more about the Space Force and to document the guardians in Delta 4, who are taught to detect incoming missiles from adversaries.

They should've called it "cyber" or "electronic". Both Russian and China re-organized theirs around 2010s, which included their satellite operations, so our move was appropriate. Just the name "space force" is ridiculous.

Space force seems inevitable, the Airforce was apart of the Army until the late 40s and became its own thing partly because of the Nuclear threat. Now that the Nuclear threat is more powerful and more difficult it seems like the appropriate response to build a Space oriented force.

When the US Marine Corps was founded people living in the late 18th century could have never imagined that only two and a half centuries later, those Marines would be traveling into battle on the tilt motor Osprey, or aboard ships the size of the largest buildings that existed back then. I like to think that maybe in 250 more years the Space Force will be in full-on power armor dropping onto the surface of IO or Europa.

When I heard about the Space Force, I immediately thought of Star Trek or The Expanse. I really wanted to do that kind of sci-fi stuff ever since I was a kid. In reality, all of the Space Force's capabilities already existed through other branches, primarily the Air Force. The new branch was a logistical streamlining, taking all the various parts of US space defense and putting it under one umbrella. Not necessarily needed, but it makes funding and administration much easier. One of the few positive things done for the military during the last administration.

The thing is, the last administration only signed it into existence. ALL of the organization and heavy lifting was done during the Bush and Obama administrations. President Obama had the option to sign the branch in, but opted to pass, believing the time wasn't right. As far as how useful the Space Force is, one need only look at the war in Ukraine. They are effectively an active participant providing real-time Intel and probably assisting on the cyber front.

China's also got a Space Force IIRC, and we can only imagine what they might be working on right now (anti-satellite weapons, EMP nuke vehicles, etc.). Australia especially would be foolish to not take this stuff seriously, since they're so much closer to Chinese territory. Heck, Russia did a reckless anti-satellite weapons test of their own before the war in Ukraine, and didn't tell NASA or apparently their own organization Roscomos beforehand (debris was just scattered everywhere in that orbit area). We're living in an age where everyone better start looking upwards more.

Agreed, orbit is the new high ground. Folks thought the early Air Forces in WWI were a joke until the pilots started carrying shotguns and grenades, then it happened again in the navies in early WWII when battleships were afraid to hit the open seas without the protection of an aircraft carrier and were relegated to essentially shore bombardment. Once one satellite drops that first tungsten telephone pole on a target, or that first Dragon capsule full of Space Force techs steals an opponent's satellite. it's game on. This doesn't even get into the Luna shenanigans that are bound to start. Right now we are essentially just in the recon phase of the branch.

let me make it simple, they protect our telecommunications which is critical to our security and our quality of life. Anything that requires transferring data over a cable or satellite is what they monitor and defend. The air force used to do this but given the importance of telecommunication infrastructure it required a dedicated branch. And going by this video it looks like they rolled some other responsibilities into the space force. Missile defense is no joke, hell they are basically a modern version of NORAD.

The ammount of time the crew of 35 Airmen consistently incorrectly identified missiles was astonishing. They would consitently label SRBM's as MRBM's all the time. It was quite pathetic. The missile warning center would consistently ring us up cause the 4 JTAGS Sites would label a missile and SIBRS would label it completly different. It's is a pretty big deal when 2 JTAGS sites label a possible threat as an SRBM comming out of North Korea that is gonna impact in the ocean but SIBRS is saying they launched an ICBM with a projected impact on the west coast.

I think the Space Force needs their own style of uniforms. Seems silly to wear camo at a domestic base. This should be the branch of the future, so they should look futuristic. Imagine how many people who laughed and scoffed at the idea of an air force 100 years ago. Most people had either never seen an airplane and still thought that flight was just a childish dream. Now having air superiority is one of, if not, the most important asset to a military. I hope I live long enough for the space force to take over that roll.

No, a hundred years ago would have been 1922/23. We had just come out of the largest war the world had ever seen to date. Most people strongly believed that aircraft would dominate the next war, which it turned out they did.

Here is the issue with some of your comments. it was most branches "job" to handle the issues. now it is only one branch. no matter what branch it is why would anyone downgrade any of the branches. Jw, I may be wrong. so, let's say instead of 20 different people, it's just 5 handling an issue. Space Force was formed to identify and catch, or shall I say take the stress off the other branches. I feel like people don't understand the newest branch, but also don't understand the reason. it is better to have 2 hands on something them 30 hands on something. if you can't understand the reason why this branch was made then you have not looked at the USA history. Branches were created for a reason.

It would be less confusing if it was called Space Guard like Coast Guard instead of Space Force. They basically guard Space domain. They are not an offensive force. I see as more and more civilian companies launch into space and manned space missions become common, Sace Force/Space Guard may also provide a Search and rescue serice like the Coast Guard and maybe an interdiction of illegal substances too (Though I dont think anything is illegal in space yet)

Agreed. Space Guard sounds legitimate, serious, and necessary. Space Force sounds exactly like Steve Carell’s TV series combined with buzz lightyear. I wish they put more thought into a proper name. Space Defense? Space Defense Corp? Astro Defense Force? Orbital Defense Corp? Maybe a name that includes the name satellite or technology in it? Something. Anything that doesn’t give the public the impression that they are a whimsical group of Starship Troopers ready to assault Mars or repel a Cylons invasion.

As a current member of the space force looking at separating (trying to get something more stable for family life), this is VERY true. Space Force experience makes you extremely hirable to hundreds of companies that will pay well above 6 figures as long as you're semi-competent. I'm a year out, and I've already had a multitude of different companies messaging me on LinkedIn trying to hire me. If you have anyone who's debating it, push them into it ASAP, and make sure they go officer. I will say though, the amount of people trying to get in is insane. I don't think the Space Force will have trouble with recruitment anytime in the next several decades. It's tiny, between 10,000 and 20,000 personnel, with limited jobs. They'll fill their lower ranks, but may struggle maintaining higher leadership positions.

However, the Air Force requires a General score of 64 minimum. Since people are applying for the Space Force in droves, I'd say you'd want at least an 80 ideally and minimum 70 if you have other qualifications/certifications. If you have a bachelors, you could go the officer route. Space Force officers tend to be utilized in operational roles and only go managerial after 4-10 years. Very atypical compared to other branches. You also get paid 3X as much

Space Force is a much needed reorganization of units that have existed for decades, but were spread out across the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. Pulling all of these units under a single Service, i.e., Space Force made sense because of how much Space has increased in importance and how our adversaries have increased their actions and contestation in Space. Operationally Space is controlled by Space Command. Space Command existed prior to 9/11, but its roles and responsibilities were moved to Strategic Command because the law at the time only allowed for a limited number of Combatant Commands and the DoD wanted to stand up Northern Command as a result of 9/11. Since then, the law has been changed to allow for more numbers of Combatant Commands, and along with a new Service, i.e., Space Force, Space Command was also stood back up, taking over its former roles and responsibilities back for Strategic Command. Right now is an exciting time in the DoD when it comes to Space.
