Edit: To be crystal clear, Crowdstrike is not like this at all. It's a 3rd party program which released an update with a bug in it. It was nothing to do with a windows update. I mean not really. It's funny af and kinda relatable, but any medium sized business would have a custom windows image installed with rules around update schedules. A company that large and that dependent on technology would likely manually push updates after testing the update on isolated machines, then slowly roll out the update on machines that are not currently needed.

You shouldn’t click updates away for weeks then. It’s usually important security stuff, like fixes for 0day exploits. especially with a proprietary operating system as vulnerable as windows I would never click an update away.

My computer have automatically scheduled it's updates windows to those period's I am not using my computer. I have never had problem with Windows update, even on older computer and versions. So I have no idea what you people are doing, but it's clearly wrong

My friend was at the hospital and forced to go code triage. It was like a panic. EHR weren’t even working. I am upset. Especially when 911 went down. We had to use the radios instead of the CAD.

OR....you could have just disabled Windows Update easily without installing a whole new OS and setting up all your apps etc.... this works on both Win10 and Win11 btw. I never had an unexpected update unless I manually go and check for one.

You can shut auto-update off you know.

This was but one of many issues I had with using Windows over the years. Another big issue is concerns about privacy and Microsoft's telemetry. I'm not going to write a comprehensive list, but in any case I am much more comfortable using Linux and the only hold up for me not switching much sooner was support for gaming, which is no where near as much of an issue now a days. Disabling updates completely is not a good solution. I want to be notified when important updates are available, but I want to have control over when/what is installed. Having to toggle updates on/off to get updates is annoying. Active hours is also not a solution, I tend to sleep/work on a somewhat haphazard schedule. I also tend to leave my computer performing processor-intensive tasks overnight at times. Windows Update has interrupted this many times. Like it or not, the lack of user control over Windows Update is an issue in Windows. And Windows has a habit of automatically turning updates back on unless you tinker with system policies and the registry to try and block it from doing so. For every step Microsoft takes forward in user experience they seem to find ways to also take a steps backwards. If you take the time to get comfortable with a variety of different desktop environments, you may feel as I do that Windows is not the best user experience. As far as I'm concerned, I now use an operating system that gives me more control and customization over my PC, better security, and better privacy. All the apps I need are available to me, and as a developer its all around a better experience. Even my system's performance has improved. For example, compiling code is nearly two times faster since switching to Linux. I don't know what garbage the windows process scheduler is doing to hinder CPU-bound performance so badly, but I'm happy for the performance gains. And of course, I can still play my games on it, so for me its the right choice.
