Space Historian Amy Shira Teitel challenges me to build Von Braun's Ferry Rocket, a design intended to put a crew in orbit using early 1950's technology.
Amy is the host of a great channel covering early space history which you should absolutely check out:

22:30 The Mythbusters did a myth about honey bees lifting a laptop and they figured each bee could provide 100 mg of lift. Going from what I found on the interwebs the ferry's gross weight was ~6,400,000 kg. This means roughly 64 billion bees. So a bee powered Von Braun Ferry isn't possible. Sorry Amy.

Have you ever watched Mythbusters? Make a bee cold, tie some string with little weights on the bee, see how much weight the bee can lift. Boom science, and no mystery goo needed.

Scott asks the question "how many bees would it take to lift this thing?". Well I have done some research and have an answer, first of all we need to know the weight of the rocket which according to a source I found is 6,400,000kg. So now that we know the weight we need to know the amount of lift a bee produces AKA the lift coefficient which for a bee to accelerate at 1m/s^2 is 0.9 newtons (this decreases the faster you want to accelerate and vice versa). So assuming we get the rocket to accelerate at 1m/s^2 then we would need 6,400,000/0.9 which equals 7,110,000 bees. Which through number crunching will (if perfect) fill 5m^3, now with bees needing 115 microliters of oxygen per hour and oxygen being about 20% of the atmosphere and there being over 7 million bees, then we can calculate that the bees would run out of air (assuming they make it that far) at 37,000 ft, although hypothermia would have long killed them or just make them stop out of exhaustion. Basically you would need 7,110,000 million bees with (oxygen masks and a warm jumper) who would only be able to lift for about a minute each, which if the average launch to space takes 9 1/2 minutes (at a constant rate of acceleration) then we can calculate then they would need about 68,000,000 bees which special gear to launch the rocket at an acceleration of 1m/s^2. But most of these would either fly away or "bee" crushed by the rocket due to some flying away
@MegaFlyCraft
@MegaFlyCraft 7 жыл бұрын
correction all the number of bees should be 1000 times greater, so 68,000,000,000 bees
