Iron Hand: "You will fail. Your sentimentality will be your undoing. The flesh is weak." Salamander: "I have heard you say that phrase on several occasions since our first encounter. I am not sure that you really understand what it means." Iron Hand: "You may have spoken with the Gorgon but do not think to school me in the teachings of my own primarch!" Salamander: "Perhaps I must if the lesson was not learned properly," Ari'i snapped back. "What you say, the flesh is weak, is only part of the saying. In forgetting the end you have lost the meaning. Vulkan said it in praise of Ferrus Manus, after the One Hundred and Eighty-Fourth Expedition when our Legions jointly liberated the ork-dominated worlds of the Shoxua Cluster. The fighting had been fiercer than anything we had expected. Your primarch said in jest that his arm was tired from killing so many orks, and Vulkan retorted with "the flesh is weak, but deeds endure". It was a celebration of what they had achieved, and a remark that even primarchs can die but what they do will last beyond their lifespan. It was a message of humility, not condemnation. Flesh is weak because it knows it must come to an end, and so we must rise above the concerns of flesh and leave a legacy that others will be proud to inherit. Ferrus Manus understood that. He was a harsh master, an unforgiving ally, but he was also a maker of things - a builder, not a destroyer. I find it strange how this conversation wasn’t passed down or even known through the history of the Iron Hands chapter.

This is what I like about the Iron Hands. They strike the perfect balance of what a space marine is - uniquely cultured with unique solutions and most importantly, they are the heroes everyone is regrettably stuck with
@dragonseatcheese8727
@dragonseatcheese8727 Ай бұрын
They aren't "heroes" because they make no effort to save anything. Civilians, soldiers, equipment, resources, or anything else. I'd go so far as to say they aren't just not heroes, they're not even soldiers. They're augmented humans who have forgotten why they were created in the first place. They weren't created as the "superior human" to replace humans. They were created to DIE for humans. And a cultured solution to something that ISN'T the problem isn't a solution. It's just a second problem. In this case, the actual problem is that the planet they are standing on is an agricultural planet for several planets around it. Losing it means losing every other planet within dozens of lightyears. So instead of... I don't know, defending it, this Space Marine decides to repurpose the soldiers that showed themselves as effective into mechanical monstrosities because it is his view that it's a waste to defend a planet. Meaning all of the planets nearby, potentially with many trillions of people that combined would be able to produce significant output for the Imperium, are just FUCKED.

Thing is, even the Marines Malevolent would wonder what the fuck is wrong with them and I can see Ezekiel, Chief Librarian of the Dark Angels, bursting a blood vessel in their presence, and Ezekiel is one fucked up guy but he at least gives some level of care for the people, especially considering he was the one who ordered an Apothecary to help a woman give birth after her husband saved his life (his bionic eye belonged to the husband and he refuses to have it replaced with something better). The kid went on to become a Sister of Battle, last I heard.

@@starhammer5247 Let's not go taking lessons on whose sensibilities are offended by genetically enhanced super soldiers with mutilated emotions, who if remained apart of any regular human society might very well become literal serial killers. We have chapters that perform cannibalism, chapters that drink the blood of their serfs, chapters that once in a while drink the blood of ALL of their serfs at once, chapters that are unable to distinguish friend from for on the battlefield, chapters that use normal humans as cannon fodder for artillery, when you go back to the Great Crusade you can compare them to Night Lords and World Eaters. The Iron Hands have an entirely unique and alien culture, revolving around being as close to machine efficient as possible, this doesn't leave room for any human error. One of the things I like most about the Iron Hands is their general attitudes "I'm better than you and I know it", because they are 99% of the time

@@darksider2903 Except he did mourn towards the latter part of his life that his sons were turning themselves into machines and planned to have a sit down with them to basically explain that that was wrong. I won't deny that he was a brutal man, that's what he was known for, but he wasn't for people replacing their limbs with metal replacements. "...Already my Legion's warriors replace their shield hands with metal in my honour, and so they too are learning to doubt the natural strength of their bodies. They must be weaned off this practice before it becomes a mania for them. Hatred of what is natural, of what is human, is the first and greatest of the corruptions. So I record it here: when the time comes, I will strip my hands of their unnatural silver. I will instruct my Legion to recant their distrust of the flesh. I will turn them away from the gifts of the machine and bid them relearn the mysteries of flesh, bone and blood. When my father's Crusade is over, this shall be my sacred task. When the fighting is done, I shall cure my Legion and myself. For if fighting is all there is, if we may never pause to reflect on what such devotion to strength is doing to us, then our compulsion will only grow." - Ferrus Manus at the start of Wrath of Iron

Ferrus Manus would not approve. He wanted to remove the metal from his hands and teach his sons the value of natural strength and the power of human will. He didn't kill the monster of Medusa because of his iron hands, but because of his strength and will to never give up. The Iron Hands are a tragic legion. His death only reinforced their reliance on technology, as they subconsciously feared that they would never be strong enough without further augmentation. "The fault is with my mind. I rely on the augmentation given to me by my metal gauntlets, so much so that the flesh beneath them is now little more than a distant memory...A day will come when I will strip it from me, lest I lose the power to master myself forever. Already my Legion's warriors replace their shield hands with metal in my honour, and so they too are learning to doubt the natural strength of their bodies. They must be weaned off this practice before it becomes a mania for them." - Ferrus Manus from "The Neimerel Scrolls"
