There are lots of names associated with space rocks, so what is the difference? Join the Royal Observatory Greenwich astronomers to find out. They will also explore what space rocks can tell us about our very own planet Earth.

I'm currently taking your brilliant free course on futurelearn.com: 'Our Solar System and Beyond: Teaching Primary Science - Royal Observatory Greenwich' and got to the bit about asteroids, watched the video, thought, "WHAT a FANTASTIC video for children!" so had a quick search and was so so so excited that you have it freely available on KZfaq so that I can share it during a future lesson. A massive THANK YOU for having this available to all! Really appreciate it.

Hi, just a bit confused. You said meteors that land are meteorites and are like rocks and magnetic but towards the end of the video you said broken ice trails from comets that enter earths atmosphere are meteors. So does that mean that both can be meteors? This is all fascinating stuff! Thanks for posting!
@madtuna.2 жыл бұрын
Small pieces of an asteroid or comet are called meteoroids, so when those pieces enter our atmosphere and they burn up they are called meteors aka shooting stars. When Earth passes through a stream of debris left by a comet we get the events known as meteor showers.

So if a big rock hits earth can we call it an Astoroid? Or is meteorite the only correct name?

What is the difference between meteors and comets?
@cartergrycko12484 жыл бұрын
Comets are made of ice, while meteors are much smaller and made of metal and rock

Did a comet hit the earth?
@RzeczpospolitaPoIska Жыл бұрын
Short answer Asteroid: Asteroids are minor objects roaming the Asteroid Belt and Kupier Belt which is space junk left from the early formations of our solar system which have a rocky, icey surface and no atmosphere. Comets: Comets are little dust and ice particles which fly through the solar system leaving a icey trail behind them. Meteoroid: Meteoroids are smaller asteroids sizing from pebbles to tall buildings, they usually roam around other planets as Earth-near Objects. Meteors: Meteors are Meteoroids which got through the Earth's atmosphere and started heating up, creating a visible trail of fire and smoke. Meteorites: Meteorites are Meteors which successfully reached the Earth's surface without burning all of its mass or losing its surface in the impact.
