The devs reduce the damage exponentially based on damage, this simple space armor model makes perfect sense. Perhaps not in a super accurate scientific way, but certainly good enough. However, I really wish cannon rounds came in different flavors like real life: explosive, penetrating, squash and phosphorus that would be a blast.

people dont understand why gun mounts are useful. I try to mount my machne guns on them protected by armor. they don't get shot off nearly as quick as basic armor

the aoe that explodes is 6 squares away from impact point with tsunami. the 6th square away will only hit 4 squares of the part it reaches. the 5th will have quite a few more damage points. it's not a perfect sphere, as we're dealing with cubes
