In this video, I will be covering settings every Synology NAS should have in 2024. Most of these will be using DSM 7.2, so I recommend that you update to take advantage of these features. I will be discussing my recommendations for security settings, data protection settings, and a few notes on general settings to help with NAS use-ability.

Loved the video. I occasionally use SSH to my Synology, keeping it off by default and only turning it on as needed. Once I'm finished, I make sure to turn it off. However, in case I forget (it happens to the best of us), I've set up a daily task that automatically shuts it down using a custom script. This script uses the straightforward commands `systemctl disable sshd` and `systemctl stop sshd`. This ensures my SSH connection is always securely closed at the end of the day.

For the backup, I like to use hyperbackup which automatically unmounts the usb drive I backup to after the scheduled event, but I also have a user task set up to automatically remount the drive right before the next scheduled back up. In the task I use the following script: echo "2-2" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usb/unbind sleep 10 echo "2-2" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usb/bind This will remount the drive, and then I have then next task to copy the backup to that drive. Hyperbackup then unmounts the drive. Nice little feature to keep a backup off the network except during the backup event.

Thanks so much. I recently had to reconnect to the NAS because of some password confusion (I had inadvertently put a space before the password) and lost most of my customizations [that you had helped with from day one]. I am pretty much where I was now. Going through all of this and the depth that I see available, I am amazed at just how much you need to know to use this one little NAS to its utmost. I know of an ex-CIO/CTO (friend's husband) for Northwestern University Health system. To think that this would have been a very small part of his bailiwick leaves me awestruck. How does someone like that even sleep at night? You too have my respect and admiration. Congrats on your accomplishments, Rex.

Set up my first Synology NAS about one month ago. Even with taking my time and following your set up videos I missed a few settings that this video helped me to correct. These user videos for us beginners are REALLY useful. I don’t need to understand all the terminology, I just want the NAS set up correctly and working. This video was a huge help to update my settings especially in the Snaphot area. I only had 2 folders set up snapshot….

@SpaceRexWill ... because so much of your content covers usage of Synology NAS devices at the home- and small-business-user levels, it would be handy if you also spent a short stint of videos to cover Synology routers in depth, given that Synology brand fidelity is pretty high among users. I, for one, have found SO MUCH help in your NAS content but I also bought a Synology router and there is such a paucity of useful content (beyond the basics of setting it up) on KZfaq and elsewhere for the routers and their OS (SRM).

Hi Will. Great video as always. I watched it twice. The first was to see what is happening and the second was to follow along with my DS1821+ and very frequent stopping of the video to make the changes you suggested. Could you possibly post a video on how to clean a Synology NAS? Like where to vacuum. I cleaned mine once thoroughly and then every few months a small touch up of the vents. Thanks and please keep making these awesome videos!

Thanks for the video. I watch your channel a lot. I have a question about snapshots. At 08:30-08:56 you say that snapshots should be set up for the ActiveBackupforBusiness shared folder, albeit only once a week. What is the use case for that? When would you want to recover this particular shared folder using an old snapshot? I suppose it could be useful if I wasn't backing up this shared folder. Since I do backup this shared folder to an offsite Synology NAS with Hyper Backup, I can't see a scenario when I would recover it with snapshots.

How to work with back up task? I set it up to back up everything once a week to a connected USB 3.5HDD connected to the nas. And sometimes it does back up, but sometimes it says that back up destination is offline. What's the reason for this? As I am fed up disconnecting and then connecting external usb to the nas to make it work.

Haha so it's normally a very unlikely event, so I probably would not worry about it too much. The probabilities that two bits in the same section of file are hit as insanely small

KZfaqr Wundertech says you need at least 3 disks in SHR, RAID 5 or 6 for datascrubbing to work, even though you can enable it with 2 disks. If you don't have at least 3 disks DSM wouldn't be able to repair a file from parity. I have a 2-bay NAS. Apparently It's no use to actually enable datascrubbing.

I have a Synology DS920+ with a 16 TB Ironwolf PRO hard drive in a RAID 1. I have now bought another Synology DS923+ and enough 16 TB ironwolf to fill both NAS. I was thinking of using one Synology as backup in another house. Which RAID configuration should I use when I have two Synology NAS. (and is it difficult to change RAID settings)
@ronbandes5630
@ronbandes5630 3 ай бұрын
I have set up exactly this scenario with a DS1520+ and a DS920+ in two different locations. The choice of backup method (Hyper Backup) and the choice of RAID level are independent of each other. A RAID level with redundancy (RAID 1, 5, 6, 10, or SHR with 1 or 2 disk redundancy) will save you from having to restore files in some scenarios, such as data corruption due to improper system shutdown. Backups will protect you from other scenarios, such as accidentally deleting files. And no NAS should be without a UPS.
@Gronvoll

I explain it all here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m6mEna-Fr8nTl4U.html Your router is your firewall. You are not taking your NAS to a coffee shop, so you should trust local connections. Furthermore 90% of the time I see someone with the firewall checked as enabled, they dont have a single block rule, which means all traffic is allowed through the firewall. So there is literally no difference between having the firewall on and off if you dont have a block rule.
