The SpaceX unveil event of Dragon Version 2, the next generation spacecraft designed to carry astronauts to Earth orbit and beyond. The spacecraft will be capable of carrying up to seven crewmembers, landing propulsively almost anywhere on Earth, and refueling and flying again for rapid reusability. As a modern, 21st century manned spacecraft, Dragon v2 will revolutionize access to space.

I have to admit, that is one luxurious capsule compared to the Soyuz.

trha2222 I wouldn't say only 1960's technology, the Soyuz has been updated over the years with new versions. The Dragon V2 is still decades ahead, though. I was initially referring to how open and visually appealing the Dragon V2's interior is, though. It's like a modern-day Mercedes-Benz S-class compared to a Reliant Kitten.

I think Mr. Musk would be the first to point out that Soyuz is a thoroughly proven, reliable vehicle. Dragon II has huge potential, but it is not yet a working system. No need to denigrate the P-51 just because you've seen the unveiling of the F-86.
@BenEtherington

You can't stand up straight in a Soyuz, and you definitely can't fit seven people in one. It'll be interesting to see how much room is left after cargo is strapped to the walls.

trha2222 Wow there kid, I think you're on the wrong youtube video. Soyuz is still by far the best lifting vehicle we are in possession of. It uses "older" but proven technology and has yet to fail; that 2nd point is kind of important as humans being shredded on liftoff/reentry is not something pretty. Why hate? The Dragon V2 announcement is great for the whole planet! It means that we finally have a more efficient way of getting humans into space. Why attempt a horribad like-farm when you can just enjoy the technology on display?

What annoys me is the big companies like the car industry, especially in America who still run on old school principles. Just like the media companies. You got someone pushing the boundaries in a few areas but the thing he has issues with the most are others are still clinging to old school principles, monopolies that still make them money. The human race would be far more advanced if it was not for people wanting to get rich.

Liam Dilley It's a huge problem with the aerospace industry because typically, companies there follow exactly what the clients requested. They don't generally go beyond spec or don't test concepts in usability, nor are expected to. No client told SpaceX "we want a reusable spacecraft." SpaceX builds it not because clients want it now, but because they bet that clients WILL pay for it, in the future.

Sexy looking interior. Never thought touchscreens would be introduced that quickly when it comes to spaceflight. I suppose these will recognize fingers even when it's in gloves and made more sensitive. I heard NASA cancelled touch screens entirely and instead went for physical switches again (for mostly everything) in their Orion module due to that reason and any mishaps that might involve something hitting the screen and activating something it shouldn't, or worse, disabling all control. Still, SpaceX came up with this and it's reuseable rockets amazingly fast. It looks like commercial spaceflight is taking over state-funded space programs rapidly. And with good reason, they don't have to deal with mood swings and general lack of knowledge & understanding shown by congress. I'm just glad Elon Musk chose to spend his money on this.
@utubesignupblows
@utubesignupblows 9 жыл бұрын
Vib3s Yes that's why in this ship they doubled all the most important systems as physical buttons, as you can see, in the middle. I see no issue with a touchscreen though - it's probably made extremely strong that even hitting it with a rock won't break it, and it can be quicker to use... I guess it depends. But I trust SpaceX they probably did the research lol
@JBG-AjaxzeMedia
@JBG-AjaxzeMedia 4 жыл бұрын
well as he explained, all the emergency controls are still buttons in the middle so if anything touches the screen it shouldn't activate self destruct or anything. Either way, it doesn't take much for any sort of debris to interact with any of the functions if it hits it hard enough

I was born at the start of the space age. 1957 My old man, May he rest in peace, was crazy about space. He was one of a few guys, who made a sattelite listeningstation in Denmark, in the 60ties. And it rubbed of on me. I saw Niel taking the great leap, and i was totally crazy about the whole thing. And then nothing happened after Apollo. I thought the whole exploration thing had died. Then ELON MUSK, God bless him, came along, and kicked sleepy old NASA in the butt. Things are finally happening again. Thanks Elon. 👍👩🏻‍🚀✨💫

Damn I wish I could work for SpaceX. I only have one more year of high school, then I'm going to study aerospace engineering for 5 years in college... Ugh six years to wait when all this is going on around me is killing me.

Watching this now in 2023 and crew dragon is the prime was for us to get astronauts into space and star liner is still on the ground. Course space x abandoned the propulsive landing and went with splashdown, but from 2020 till now they get astronauts to space

Clarifications for NOBOX7: I don't think I've ever seen so many stupid errors in such a short post. Officially, space starts at 62 miles, not 30. The ISS is at 200 miles. Escape velocity is 25,000mph, but Dragon is not attempting to go to interplanetary space beyond Earth's gravity. Dragon goes to ORBIT on top of a Falcon 9 rocket - the animation starts after separation from the F9 upper stage. Orbital velocity at 200 miles is approx. 17,100 mph. After leaving the ISS, Dragon does a de-orbit burn using its Draco control thrusters and falls back into the atmosphere. During re-entry it continues using its control thrusters to approach the ground with an accuracy of about 1/2 mile. By the time it is a few miles from the ground it has been slowed by air resistance to about 200 mph - Dragon 1 deploys parachutes and splashes into the ocean. Dragon 2 will have 8 SuperDraco engines, each capable of over 16,000 lbf of thrust. They use a hypergolic fuel (which does exist - it's been used for decades), a mixture of Nitrogen Tetroxide (N2O4) and Monomethyl Hydrazine (MMH). If Dragon has to escape from the Falcon 9 rocket on the way up, the SuperDracos can accelerate Dragon at 6g. Gravity on the way down is only 1g, although it's even less than that because of air resistance. The SuperDraco engines easily have enough thrust to slow Dragon for touchdown.

Still wish SpaceX can have some chance to test propulsive landing...Like some space or sub orbit touring flights. So that eventually one day NASA will be confident enough to use that.

Shame they couldn't do the propulsion landing, but it's understandable. They aren't doing human missions back to back so even if the risk of propulsion landing is minimal it's still probably not worth it.
