Andrew from SpackleBucket Moto gives his Brutally Honest Review of his last bike the 2019 GPX TSE250R. This is a full length, in depth review going through the bike piece by piece, noting highs (and lows) from Andrews perspective. Having owned this bike for ~18 months, and doing everything from commuting to Gnarly trails, light MX, and flowy singletrack, Andrew offers a unique perspective on this bike.
Hunker down with your favorite essential oil (2T premix that is.....) and listen in to this Brutally Honest Review.

I appreciate the response and this is exactly what I was aiming for. Doing this review I realized that even one this long could have been 2-3 times longer if I were to really go in depth on everything. I quickly saw just how much many reviews (including this one) were lacking, and gave me new ideas for more in the future. 👍

Thanks Andrew. We talked before ether by email or some other means back in November I think. After our discussion back then and certainly because of this video I'll stick to a bike I know. I'll get another KDX200 or 220. Very professional and thorough review. The first of it's kind on the TSE. Nice work and thank you.

Wow you've done an amazing job at compiling a well researched data base for the GPX TSE250R owners...thank you. It's obvious, through your efforts, that you want to like the bike. I'm looking to pick up a 2021 TSE model. I'm hoping the issues you discussed have been addressed. The flywheel lock washer sounds like a manufacturing/assembly training issue. The new forks manufacturer hopefully corrects the hyperextension issue. Do you know if the gear shifter assembly arm defect has been addressed/corrected?
@SBMoto

I believe they've updated a lot of stuff with the bike for the 2021 model. I think the gear shifter was addressed too. If not mentioned in the video, its a good reminder about 1st year models from ANY manufacturer. I mean, who wants to go buy a 2021 Land Rover Defender and think it'll be trouble free? 🤣

I love my GPX250tse . compared to a bike costing twice as much it is a great value. You should go pre mix and that problem would go away. The tires need an upgrade as well.Otherwise my local dealer can help with any other issues.This bike when ridden with respect is a great bike with lots of low end power. I rode trials for many years before I rode enduro. I have not owned a KTM or Husky, too much money for me.I hear alot about problems with those bikes like overheating which the GPX never dose. Never! no problems with my GPX

@@billallen4793 I'm turning 48 next and was diagnosed with a spinal condition that will eventually render me immobile in all likelihood, so I get where you're coming from. I'm in pretty good shape right now but that will more than likely be short lived. Se Lavi. To your question, Yamaha made WRs (wide range) in both 2 and 4 stroke. WRFs are 4 strokes. I'm racing a hare scramble on Sunday on my 1992 WR200 2 stroke, fantastic bike. The GPX is base lose on it, but mostly on the DT230 Lanza, never sold in the US...I don't think. The problem with that is the motor is a boat anchor, very heavy and low in the frame. GPX also makes an FSE 250 air cooled 4 stroke that I heard is just as good for us old guys on the trails, it's based on a Honda of some sort. If your looking for a little more pep look into the GPX FSE300 or the all new KLX300, they are both very inexpensive. God Bless Bill, hope to run into you on the trail some day.

Thanks for the great review. I like the technical aspects, and real world user aspects. I am positive things have improved quality wise. If there was a review this deep on the gpx fse 300. Deeply discounted and way cheaper than the 250 2 stroke. Blah blah blah. From what I have read and youtubed (new word), outstanding customer service. I am an older trials and trail rider and I was hoping there was a Chinese trials bike. Anyhow I am gonna keep my dr 350. Heavy, typical brakes and suspension for the era, bullet proof and it don’t bother me dropping it. The worst thing is starting it, no e start and a manual compression release. I will sell my Honda crf 150 f cuz gf no longer rides. I will sell my ttr 230 cuz it’s as good as it is bad. And sell my 350 sxf. I thought I was gonna be Taddy Blazusiak. Ha ha. Just to much bike for first and second gear rocky single track. So I have seen several bike rental companies renting gpx. It’s hard to imagine a tougher life. So here I am. Enough rambling. Thanks for the technical stuff.

I'd love to do further reviews on the other GPX bikes. Their community is vast and very helpful if any issues arise. It does seem they've ironed out some early issues on any of their bikes, which is great to see. Thankfully my 350exc is doing everything I could ask of it, but maybe one day I can convince myself to add another GPX. Quite possibly one of their soon to be released e-bikes for the yutes. 👍

From watching and reading responses from others---Can you confirm the hours and/or miles on bike when you purchased it? And what year it was? I'd like to put that in perspective and context with some of the issues mentioned. And also the hrs/miles you put on the bike while you owned it.
@SBMoto
@SBMoto 4 жыл бұрын
For sure. Despite as many things I tried to note\documents, I figured I'd miss some details. Yes, I got the bike with low hours on it ~24. Which from my personal experience is just about where everything on a bike is starting to break in. The bike was originally purchased new in 2018 as soon as it was released (May I believe?). I bought it in early July. I owned it from July 2018 through November 2019. I'll add that the guy I got it from has since gone through 2 more TSE's, and had put a combined ~300 hours between those 2 and has\had a couple other GPX bikes and is looking at more. The 3 main issues I had were Fork Leg, Brakes, and Shift Shaft. I'll address them one by one. Fork Leg - I first noticed an issue with the left fork leg leaking. Nothing that I felt was a major issue, as its a dirtbike. It happens. I want to say it happened ~40-50 hours of run time? I was not concerned about it as I consider fork seals a wear item. The problem I had though was that the fork leg internals disassembled. In all my years of riding, I'd never seen this happened, so yes....it was a bit of a shock to me, and gave ME some personal concerns with regards to the bike. The internal disassembling also is what I believe was the root cause of the fork seal failing as I believe that under full extension (front wheel off ground), the left fork leg could hyper-extend. That's my SWAG and personal opinion. I will note as well that the bushings still looked to be in good condition. Also, as noted in the Video....Gary at GPX went above and beyond with replacing my fork leg for me. Yes, I knew the bike was not new, however as I had relayed, in all my years of riding, I had NEVER seen a fork disassemble like this from regular use. I was not expecting free fork seals or anything of that sort. Gary shipped me a replacement fork leg, and requested that I reassemble the old one and ship it back to him. I did as requested. GPX has also since changed fork suppliers (as noted in video), so maybe this was one other reason, I don't know. Brakes - In the race I competed in (linked in description), that was October of 2018 (~2 months of owning) was when I had my major brake issues. This was around similar run time ~40-50 hours? In the race, I lost all of my rear brake. Prior to this, the rear brake never felt as solid as prior bikes I've owned and ridden. Generally I can quick stab of brake and lock the rear. Mine was never that solid. I had attempted bleeding it multiple times, and had (wrongly) assumed it was my own doing, related to the hydraulic brake switch I installed on the rear brake. Upon disassembly, I had found the torn\failed seals. During the race, I had intermittent front brake issues. Internal seals on the master cylinder didn't appear to be problematic, and most my issues went away with additional bleeding & fresh fluid in the system. That noted, the front brake was still (for me) never as solid as other bikes. Not to say it was bad, but not as solid as I was used to. Shift Shaft - This happened again, during the first race I did on the bike. I've gone through the video to see if there was a point that I caused this in a crash, as it happened relatively early on. There is one point where I low side on the trail, however I believe I was in a right hand turn, though I could be mistaken (haven't re-watched footage). Whether it was a low side, or my mashing the shift lever too hastily mid-race....its relatively irrelevant. Mine failed, as did others throughout the world. When I analyzed the shift shaft, my opinion was that something was not 100% right on the construction of the unit. Gary at GPX shipped me a replacement one for $15. The replacement unit had shifted well for me, though as I noted in the video, it never felt as smooth as other shifters I'm used to. If you compare shift shaft\pawl & shift star assemblies of the TSE unit compared to newer style ones, you'll understand just why the OEM's have moved on from the older style setup. I will add that when I got the replacement fork leg from GPX, they also shipped me a replacement subframe part. I did NOT ask for this. I assumed I broke mine in a crash or something, and would NOT expect GPX to replace this. I was willing to pay for the item, but was not going to replace it, as I felt it was a relative non-issue. If I look at my time with the bike, I put ~50-60 hours on it. I couldn't tell mileage as I'd abandoned the OEM Speedo early on, as it did not function correctly. Hope this clears up some of your questions. If you have any others, feel free to ask.

Great video. The bike will be good for trails and enduro racing. But you give me that bike for one day at a motocross track and ride it at a B level and that bike would impress me if it lasted one track day. The chinesium would show its ugly face. But for a first timer or casual trail rider/enduro racer would have decent luck with this bike. As a suggestion when bought new i bet this bikes engine/chassis would greatly benefit from a cryo treatment. And any potential buyers have to consider they will have to do the airbox cage upgrade etc. For 5000 you can get a really nice ktm 200/250 around the 2015-17 range and as someone who has owned and currently races a 2014 250sx ktm two strokes are bulletproof, and super easy to work on. But this bike is really a decent package.

Great bike for moderate trail riding Got to love a 2 stroke ❤️ Got to love that Chinese ingenuity to put it all together copied or not . QUESTION are these truly street legal ? Probably not in California or NY. NY loves to follow California nonsense . How can I find out if it’s street legal in NY . Loved the cake comparison 🎂😂. Thanks

I've ridden street bikes for 25yrs and recently bought a WR450F to turn into supermoto. While saving money for wheels and tires I decided to get some seat time so I took it out on some trails. I love dirt riding but hate the pig 450. Of course I didn't know this or even expect to fall in love with the dirt. So I have been looking into enduro type bikes and was considering the TSE250. For many reasons probably. One, I think I want a 2 stroke. Two, I don't want to sink a bunch of money into something and realize I screwed up, again. Three, they seemed to be copying a proven design which I thought is better than trying to convert an MX bike to enduro. I am willing to make compromises in some areas but NOT when it comes to weight. Im so glad I watch this. I would be ecstatic if I could get a 200lb 150cc 2 stroke.

I seriously considered buying one of these as I was tired on constantly fixing my 20+ year old KTM. I ended up giving the KTM to my son for his first 2-stroke (after installing the green spring), and then found a completely rebuilt 1999 KX250 that was specifically built to be a woods bike. New tires, new top end, new bars/grips, FWW, larger tank, 18in rear wheel, gnarly exhaust/TC2 pipe, original stock exhaust, and a complete 2nd set of plastics/graphics for $1800 just after break-in. All of the work was done by dealer mechanic. For my money, I couldn't pass up a deal like this knowing exactly what I was getting. When I reached out to the closest GPX dealer to me (8hr drive), I didn't get the feeling that I was getting my money's worth. The GPX absolutely looks like it has potential, but I'm horribly cheap when it comes to my playtoys.

Plastics are compatible with Husqvarna. The OEM headlight though is a Yamaha WR450F replica, and I believe the original front fender was a Honda CRF unit. Swap both those to the Husky ones, and not only does it look and fit better, but you also lose a little weight with ditching the excess steel brackets they used to make that setup fit. The 2021 or whatever models might be different?

There is something very irritating about this guy and his mannerisms. No I'm not a GPX 2 stroke bike owner. I'm not biased. I think it's the attempt to show off wisdom . It's a bike which is made by reverse engineering and that too requires engineers and a lot of work. It's for people who cant afford the husky ( by the way I had a 2007 husky TE 250 and it had its own set of issue ) It's for people who want to get into the sport and dont have a million bucks. I clicked on it thinking it's a review from a riders point of view but it was some technical show off, of thread sizes of mikuni carb and the origins of DT engine and accounting for the elusive pound of weight in the exhaust pipe. And the part where he ridicules the manufacturer by with that makuni stuff . Seriously ? That's what troubled u ? Or was it the feelings of a china hater having to settle for a Chinese bike since there was no good deal on used orange bikes ?

Your critique of the review was pointless. This bike sells for 1200 CDN dollars less than a real properly engineered Yamaha YZ250 2 stroke. But this is only 50% of the bike the Yamaha is. Can't afford/justify Husqvarna? Buy Yamaha. Can't afford/justify YZ250? Buy this thing but don't kid yourself about what it is. This dude spent an hour of his time to inform you with real details of deficiencies found. If you prefer vague comments, loud rock music as guys do ride bys and blow smoke up your ass "reviews", well, youtube is full of such. His mannerisms and technical knowledge and overall lack of motocross ego is exactly why I believe him. I believe this is an honest review. This is not marketing wank or some guy telling you he knows everything. Just a long winded honest review. Exactly what I wanted to see about this bike which has very little honest info out there on the internet forums ect. China will no doubt overtake Japanese manufacturing in power sports someday. We all want to know if that day is now. That's why we clicked on a 55 min long review video. Comparing it to euro bikes? That's silly. Euro bikes arent even in the same ballpark price range. So no one cares about that.
