I grew up with spaghetti-Os and that looks horrifying.

I actually shivered at how nasty that looks.

Being Italian-American, SpaghettiOs were taboo in my house. I tried it at school during snack time for the first time in Kindergarten and I spit it out and never looked back lol

I'm italian and I don't know for what to be shocked before: - The concept itself of spaghetti in jelly - The overcooked "pasta's rings" called "spaghetti" - The fact that all the ingredients are in cans - The color of the sauce

The book, “I went to Vassar for this?” actually covers these weird recipes. Back then, they had tomato and other savory flavored jellos. It’s a fantastic book with terrific humor, so well worth the read on its own.

I'm Italian and the taste of my childhood is Italian plain bread with olive oil, salt and a tomato from the garden. It was my afternoon snack almost every day. For lunch and dinner I had whatever the adults had. Usually pasta with tomato sauce or vegetables, then many greens and not much meat/fish/eggs/cheese.

This was very common in the 60s and 70s or things like it. My mom would add regular hotdogs or nothing. She would always hide steamed mixed veg in the jello. We ate WAY more vegetables as kids because of dishes like this than we ever would on their own. If she were making this I would imagine only one can spaghetti o's and the rest steamed vegetables. She would also puree carrots and mix in. A full half of the dish was always veg of some sort. Mom was very good at hiding vegetables in things. Lime Jello with pureed spinach leaves (70% veg), orange Jello with shredded carrot. (70% veg). On a hot summer day, it was so refreshing and yummy. We also thought we were just eating spaghetti o's little did we know. lol

There are countless reasons I've enjoyed watching Emmy for so many years making and tasting foods I would never eat, but it occurs to me that it's fascinating for there to be people unlike me who must experience things without knowing they wouldn't like it or to find out that they don't like it...

Discovered you by accident. LOVE you on purpose, lol! I DID grow up on this stuff. Now, my Grams cooked good and wholesome suppers. And a restaurant size breakfast on Sundays. Sometimes. For the rest of brekkies and lunchies, we were on our own, so Grams had stuff like spaghettios, canned macaroni and cheese (Franco American with really fat and long macaroni strands), ravioli, vegetables, soups, and bread, lunch meats, pb&j, et cetera, so that my sister and I and Gramps could all make our own meals and do our own clean ups during the day. SHE was one smart cookie! Today, I FINALLY get why she did that: making all three meals every. single. day. IS A TOTAL DRAG, man. I know, because I am having to do it for the last ten years for the hubster and his kids, ALL FOUR of whom have been old enough to fend for themselves in a manner speaking. Anyhoo, they LOVE those Vienna sausages, and the youngest positively ADORES Spaghettios! Her birthday is in August, and y'all just gave me her birthday menu. Making that bologna cake, THIS jello mold and......what to do for the entree and veggie side? I am sure if I just keep watching, I will find those, too!

I have never heard of such. I am American. I grew up with Speghettios and Vienna sausages. I love them. I still eat them. Spaghettios are soooo good cold out of the can. Not sure I could deal with them being made into a jello though.

What a weird food time it was when people were putting things in jello. I'm really curious what they were thinking... like just reheating spaghettios isn't hard enough so they had to put it in a jello mold to make it look like they "made" something. haha

I give you kudos for making and actually trying some very DIFFERENT food choices in this series. I'm presuming most of these dishes were from the 70's if I recall my childhood days correctly. Especially the "jello mould" days . We rarely had spaghettio's ...we were more beeferoni or ravioli when we were allowed to have them.
