Good video but I disagree on ignoring North Africa. Marrakesh, Algiers and Tunis lie close to the sea thus you can use your fleet to transport your troops there quickly. Taking Timbuktu (and later Arguin) is definitely worth it in the long run, you should spam merchants there over the fairly rich resources to fund your conquests elsewhere. I think it's also a good decision to convert Toledo and Valencia into cities while Zaragoza should be a castle. Even Granada could be converted since Algiers and Tunis usually serve as much more effective frontier outposts in point of expanding eastward. I don't consider spreading beyond the Pyrenees a good idea. There are only Catholic factions there and you can easily find yourself in costly and dragging wars against France, England, HRE, Milan and/or Denmark. Instead I prefer conquering Egypt and the Holy Land by crusades then invading Asia Minor. Since Milan and Sicily often get excommunicated, you can snatch their territories over the Mediterranean with impunity as well.
@lugotorix61735 жыл бұрын
Yeah there is certainly a viable argument for going against the Moors instead of the French after you've unified Spain. I generally don't like traversing the long distances between settlements, but maybe you are indeed correct that it could be the better option (especially if you have a strong navy)
@MachinegunnerMugZ5 жыл бұрын
The thing is catholic factions are becoming too dangerous if you let them develop their empires in the early game. Hire 2 units of Jinetes, 5 units of Mailed Knights and combine them with 3 General's Bodyguard units and a spy to dominate any early game catholic faction army in the field. As for capturing settlements there are plenty of Mercenary Spearmen and Mercenary Crossbowmen to hire in western europe. France, Milan and England should be your vassals or get destroyed by turn 30. To prevent Portugal from attacking you marry one of your starting princesses to their faction heir. And as for The Pope, send a second starting princess with a diplomatic mission and arrange a crusade to any muslim settlement to prevent him from choosing Tolouse as a crusade target after your faction gets excommunicated.

@@MachinegunnerMugZ France, Milan AND England by turn 30?? That's truly ambitious. Don't forget Agressive Expansion 😋
@MachinegunnerMugZ5 жыл бұрын
@@sergiusko4327 All of european factions excluding Hungary and Poland tend to hire only 1-3 cavalry units per army in an early turns of campaign, so it is becoming really easy to defeat any number of garbage militia infantry/useless archers in a field battle. Venice can be difficult after conquering France, England and Milan though, sometimes they gather an army of 6-8 Mailed Knights and 2-3 General Bodyguards combined with decent infantry. So unless they are willing to attack your army in a bridge battle it is trully challenging to defeat them and most definitely will slow down your progress. On the other side there are allways Scotland and Denmark who prefer infantry over cavalry on any campaign part.

No offense, but how can you play a game where you stare at a map for hours and hours and still be bad at geography? :P Just saying, at least for me, playing games like this and Hearts of Iron, etc. helped tremendously with geography...at least, European geography. Just need to learn/memorize rivers and lakes better and BOOM - expert on European geography =)

I am playing now with Spain as the new Rome, capital Castra Legionis (Leon) and Toletum. The Legions consist of Javelins, allied units are town/spear militia and cavalry is jinettes. Its a powerful force. The scenario is what-if? What if Spain stayed like it did during the Roman Empire into the dark ages with its legion style armies (javelin throwing cav and infantry). If you can mod the vanilla you can change the stats and make them heavy infantry (like the Roman heavy infantry of old), but the models will still look the same. Love Medieval 2, best game ever.

Pike militia and tercios might have low defense, but absolutely do not charge cavalry into the front of them. You would almost be better off just making that unit of cavalry withdraw. Prepared pikes slaughter cavalry in this game.

For me, when playing as Spain, I would have made marital alliances with the HRE and Sicily. Then, drive the Moors out of Iberia, make an alliance with Portugal, and once the technology for sailing improves, sail to the New World as fast as I can! ¡Santiago a ellos!
@noblenaveragemanointernet25823 жыл бұрын
That's such a boring way to play Spain.
@mikeromney47123 жыл бұрын
@@noblenaveragemanointernet2582 Right, first step Zaragoza, send the princess via ship to Rome to make an alliance with the papalstate, than build one balista in Leon and Toledo (round 5), and attack in round 9 Portugal simultaniously on both fronts and wipe it from the map....than take on Cordoba and keep the pressure up to Grenada and Marakech. The greater Moorish army shatters often in the siege of Valencia. Marry with your princess in Northern Italy an Milanese or Venetian General, buy local mercenarys and take Florence.....works also fine with Portugal....:)

Portugal is better. They have better pikemen and arquebusiers. Or the italians, with the carrocio standard, your pike militia will have the same morale as tercio pikemen and your muskets will have triple the morale of spanish muskets.
@machaiping4 жыл бұрын
Another way to beat the Portugal without inciting the ire from the Pope is to go Brothel => Inn and get a pair of assassins, send them to each Portugal starting settlement and then save-scumming to kill his entire Royal family, which at this point of the game, are just 4 guys, tops. You should be able to wipe them out in two turns this way and then claim their settlements which turned rebel afterward. The same can work on Spain too should you play Portugal.
@matthewjohnathanwarburton83425 жыл бұрын
What about; 1: Sign off as Spain with temporary Moor alliance and use princesses to contact Portugal and France for more long term alliances. 2: Weed out Rebel regions like Zaragoza and Valencia within the first 10-15 turns. 3: When strong enough, betray the Moors and start an all out blitz on their Iberian Possessions (I.E. Cordoba), PS-Pope won't give a shit because of obvious reasons. 4: Cultivate stronger relations with the Vatican and go on Crusade to gain Favor. 5: When Milan eventually tries to invade the Spanish mainland, turn them back gradually, then call on the Pope to crusade against Milan's great cities themselves. Within the first 80 turns, you will not have pissed off too many people and you'll have most, if not all of Spain, territories in the holyland, and holdings somewhere in Italy that are rich and easily defensible.
