The Spanish community is re-establishing itself in places like Siargao. This is a great opportunity to revive something great in Philippines. Stronger among the Spanish speaking world like Mexico, Spain etc.

When I was studying Spanish in my Spanish class in my college days, I was studying Engineering then, I really did not value much about the language. Now, I realized that Spanish is one of the most important languages in the world. It is the second most spoken language next to Mandarin, which is of course spoken mainly in China, while Spanish is natively spoken in several countries.

This is very good discussion. There is a need to REDISCOVER the Spain's legacy. There is so much emphasis on Rizal and the abuses particularly by the friars, but there's more than that to learn. I was born after the WWII but have heard so much stories how beautiful was Manila but have been devastated during the war. Happy to hear more of this. I'm 71 but so much interested in knowing more. Gracias

Such great insights! I am an Architect and Mr. Romero's statement in regards to urban planning in the Philippines made me really thinking. Spaniards in some sorts and ways affected the urban planning in the Philippines. All of it were designed according to the provisions of the Leyes de Indias (Indies Legislation) enacted in 1573 by King Philip II. Urban guidelines primarily was planned in accordance to the ease of the spaniards in their activities, such near harbors on inlets, bays, and river banks; as headlands to control the territories, regular grid layout to separate the spanish from the natives, Spaniards lay the foundation of sites and the creation of road networks, structures and other such related to it. Some of this concepts are still present in the urban planning of the Philippines now. Recent urban sites sprouted from the past spanish urban sites.

FYI, Spanish was a only a SIX (6) unit subject in almost all the College courses during the time when Spanish was includedin the curriculum hence it was practically useless because students who finished the course could not communicate in Spanish. There is NO need to bring back Spanish in College because Spanish is not relevant to most of the college courses. Those who want to learn Spanish can always enroll in an istitution that offers Spanish .

One of Philippines' worst move as a Government was removing the Spanish language from the educational curriculum, they should have just left aside the past grudges and should have seen the advantage of the language, imagine a country which people can speak English and Spanish, two of the widest spoken language in the world besides mandarin, The job opportunities it would have opened for every Filipino if they can still speak Spanish is immeasurable. such a dumb mistake from our Government, whoever is that idiot who suggested to remove it that time. what would your grudge do, why not just take advantage whatever they left here on us rather than making it even by removing the language they left here, that's just plain nonsense

It is time to bring back Spanish as one of the official languages in the Philippines and here are the concrete steps on how should we bring Spanish back to the Philippines: 1.) Amend the 1987 Constitution to reinstate the official language status of Spanish and permit 100% foreign equity ownership restrictions of all kinds of domestic businesses and private lands. 2.) Make Spanish one of the core subjects and mediums of instruction from kindergarten until college. 3.) Encourage Iberians and Latinos to come to the Philippines and teach Filipinos how to speak Spanish in public and private schools. 4.) Compel mass media companies to produce TV, radio, print, and social media content in Spanish. 5.) Incentivize parents to make their children native speakers of Spanish by inculcating them with Christian values like reading and memorizing Spanish biblical verses from the Reina-Valera bible.

Phlippine language and culture are both rich and prevailing while we were colonized by Spain for over 3 centuries and has more than a century of dealings with the Americans they influenced our languages but we kept our own languages and dialects all over the archipelago. Which is good to keep our own distinct qualities , heritage and identity as a nation. The Name of the country is named afterKing Philip the 2nd. Filipinas then translated in English Philippines. Pero Pilipinas in Filipino, most of the Latin American countries' names were given by Spain and they do use Spanish or Hispanic Language to this day. But we are distinct, Spaniards they discriminate , some of them look down on us but we kept our rich culture specially the diverse dialects.

Filipinos obsession with Spanish blood is sad result of colonialism where the peninsulas etc were the elites. Sadly until now the Philippines is still a class based society. You still have the political classes who say they have Spanish blood etc to justify some kind of entitlement. In actual fact there's very little Spanish blood in the Philippines compared to the majority population. Filipinos gained their Spanish surnames from the Catalogo de alfabetico de apellidos from claverias decree in mid 19th century. This was used to facilitate taxation. Sadly indegenous Filipinos will never be able to trace their real ancestry/family tree following the changing of surnames. To be fair, maybe indigenous Filipinos did not have a good record keeping of their ancestors/lineage before this decree, as similar to other southeast asian cultures they did not keep surnames and sometimes just got by with a single name.

You ask yourself why the Filipinos embrace the United States instead of Spain. Why is that? Well, Spain never came back and offered any help to the islands. They just left them like a rotten chop liver While the Americans stayed guided, taught, embraced Filipino diaspora in the United States, build the Philippine economy as well as defending their sovereign rights and territory. That's one big reason why Filipinos didn't care about carrying the Spanish Language. Even today, WHERE IS SPAIN?

6:55 spanish embassy is very strict when issuing visas to the Philippine passport holders. That's why there were not many filipinos in Spain. Even the well-traveled filipinos who can speak Spanish and have previously went to Spain can get their visa application rejected by the embassy. Google the post by some travel bloggers.

I didn't know anything about that...and it's all a disappointment because Philippines, like Ibero-Americans, only need 2 years of residence to apply for nationality and can keep theirs. The rest of the countries require 10 years of residence to apply for nationality and cannot maintain the previous one. I would like our country to review its policies towards our Philippine brothers, I do not see the logic in any type of ban on a visa for a Philippine citizen.

@@angryfrogger It does not surprise me that Filipino migration is low to Spain. What would be the reason for a Filipino to want to live in Spain? For a Filipino, Spain did not represent an attractive destination, they do not speak the same language and although there are common customs, The reality is that after years of North American influence, it is most likely that he does not even have a good image of the country. On the other hand, for many years, on a human level, what the Philippines exported was cheap labor and in this type of immigration, the USA is the appropriate country, a large country with the capacity to accept that labor. And it must be taken into account that when Spain, due to the natural evolution of all developed countries, has needed labor, it has been easier for it to influence Hispanic Americans, at the end of the day it is the same language. It has been with the second generations of North Americans of Filipino origin and the Filipinos themselves with the arrival of the Internet who in recent years have asked themselves about their own origins. And please don't be offended, but I can show you not only videos, but channels exclusively of Hispanic Americans talking about their life experience in Spain and encouraging their fellow Americans to emigrate to Spain. But I don't know of any channel or any video of the Filipino community complaining about what you comment, I'm not saying that you lie, I simply haven't seen this information that you comment on anywhere. If you want to know more about the Filipino community in Spain, it may help you to contact "Eamiss" which is one of the Filipino associations in Spain, greetings.
