I am a Spaniard. I love La Roja. Villa was offsides. The goal would have been annulled today. However, it was not the classic type of offsides where someone is waiting in an offside position. In this case, Villa would have been onside had Xavi not touched the ball. It wasn’t for lack of quality on the part of Spain nor quality on the part of Portugal. It was a fluke that Villa was offsides. But, he was offsides.

Villa was always in the right place. He really was lucky to score so many goals, if you think about it. Then again, positioning is a skill as well. But he had that long range goal vs Chile, which was lucky because he got the ball with the keeper out of the net, and then he had this one and the one against Paraguay go in off the post or crossbar, which is very close as well.

If you employ this logic universally, most poacher strikers are just "lucky." Good positioning creates the illusion of luck.

Freedomz You're right, there is obviously a great deal of vision and positioning involved. But just look at the examples I gave above. Villa scored the long range goal against Chile basically because he was out of position. And the other two that I mentioned, which went in off the post or crossbar, were not lucky because of positioning but because if it had been a few centimeters off, the ball would not have gone in.

Wow, horrendous display by the refs. First the offside Villa goal then giving the red for a BLATANT dive (even if he got hit, it was so soft and should never be a red, especially when it was an attacker who "hit" him).. Portugal were robbed. Puts Spain's World Cup in a bad light.

This match was a rival match between Spain and Portugal. Villa made an amazing goal to win by 1-0. Spain usually beat Portugal in most of the time.

First of all, Villa's goal was offside, and secondly, in 4 matches between both teams in major competitions it's one win for Portugal (1-0 Euro 2004), one win for Spain (1-0 WC 2010), two draws (0-0 Euro 2012, 3-3 WC 2018). (Spain won on penalties in 2012, but it's still a draw in the match). 1 win, 2 draws, 1 loss in total. Very even actually. And as of today, in the last 3 matches played between them, it's 3 consecutive draws.
