As a Brazilian who has lived outside of Brazil for 22 years (almost my full life), these questions didn't annoy me at first but they start to tear away at you after a while because they are so common but the ABSOLUTE WORST is when people say "you're from Brazil? Were you born in Buenos Aires?" Like no, that's Argentina, please stop or I'll cry

The only thing that annoys me a bit as a Brazilian is when Carnival is automatically associated with Samba. I come from Recife, and although there is some Samba there, it is very small compared to other cultural rythms and events. Same for Bahia's carnival and even the Amazonas carnival. We should be able to export more than Rio and SP to other countries, but it's been a problem for ages.

Obviously she is brazillian as well so not criticizing or anything, but yeah her example about the amazon was in a trip to like the forest parks itself and those are like she said of course. But also the amazon is not "just" the forest and there are cities big and small that are in the amazonic biome, even if more urbanized. Manaus is a big capital in basically the middle of the amazon (obviously its urbanized and all that) while Belem is in the eastern edge of the amazon, i live here and i took boat rides around the rivers nearby and yeah its really cool. So its more accessible to the people that live in the amazon itself. But of course she is right, its not part of the lives of most brazillians

Listen folks, I don't wanna be "that guy", but the Spanish and Portuguese languages are not similar or "share common traits", they are SISTER-LANGUAGES, both come from latin and that is widely known, but Portuguese and Spanish are literally in the same BRANCH, almost like one language that divides into two, that's way they have 80% lexical overlap, no language in the world can inter-communicate so well as these two, cuz guess what! Spain and Portugal are located in the same peninsula and were founded under the same events in the Reconquista period! It's not a surprise when they have the same words with slightely different syllables, it's heavily expected for that to happen.

It appears that the brazilian girl is happy that other countries "know" anything about Brazil, which I dont think it's the brazilian feeling in general. Most people I talk with are actually upset that foreigns only know Samba, which is only that popular in Rio and SP. Probably the best carnival in Brazil is in Salvador, which is most Axé. Funk is also getting very popular in Carnivals, at least here in Minas Gerais.

Brazilians demand that foreigners understand everything about Brazil, when the same brazilians don't know that much about other countries except of the stereotypes. Ask a Brazilian about Russia and he will probably say something about vodka or snow, ask about italy and they will probably say something about pizza and mafia. Let's not even get to Africa, a continent most people think is a country. Brazilians tend to think everyone needs to know about the marvelous wonders of Brazil, when they don't even know much about our neighbors.

Brazilians who live abroad, especially in English-speaking countries, normally speak English too. And, inside Brazil, there are a few people who work in academia or work for multinational corporations as part of international teams and have to use English as a working language on a more regular basis. Overall, however, the vast majority of Brazilians are monolingual and only a small percentage of the population in Brazil can actually speak English or understand it. In that sense, if you are visiting Brazil and do not know any Portuguese, it is actually better to try to speak with the locals in Spanish rather than in English because, even though they won't answer you back in Spanish, there are more likely to understand you if you speak Spanish and might not understand anything if you speak only English. Of course, at a hotel desk or an airport information booth, it's OK to speak English because people who work there are supposed to know English, even though their pronunciation and grammar might be not so good sometimes. I am talking here mostly about speaking to random people on the streets, but also when interacting with waiters in a restaurant, taxi/Uber drivers, or even shop assistants in stores or police officers. It is better to use Spanish than English in those cases.

There's just one "wrong" thing the brazilian girl said about Rio and São Paulo, I was surprised ar first but when she mentioned she is from the South (these cities are in the Southeast of Brazil) I understood. She kinda trade the papers, São Paulo is the most rich state, Rio is the seconde of this but is not even close about this, so there is where you find the big buldings, skycrapers, and the city is also one of the biggest in population and size in the world, like, top 5 or so. Rio is where the art part is really a thing, is where Samba, Bossa Nova and Funk (the brazilian version) were created, and because of how good looking the city is 99% of the national movies, novels and series are in Rio or about it (City of God, the most famous brazilian movie is about a "favela" of Rio with the same name in Portuguese). It is also where the big art and sport events happen, Rio has received 2 World Cup finals, is where Maracanã is located, where the Olimpics happend, where Rock In Rio festival happens and all this stuff. I don't have the best of the pictures of the linguistic savviness of most of the Brazilian. Brazil is such a large country, larger than Europe by far, that many Brazilians overestimate the relevance of Portuguese in the region or in the world. Let me explain. The couple of times I've been in Brazil, people don't even question that I should speak Portuguese. And I don't mean slow and well pronounced one, I mean the fast daily Brazilain Portuguese. And if you speak English, just to make clear that you didn't understand a word, then they usually don't understand you and again reply in Brazilian Portuguese. This happened to me in the counter of a touristic Hotel. Funny, when Brazilians, I've heard this complain all over the rest of the southern cone, visit other countries they also assume that EVERYONE speak Brazilian Portuguese and got really angry when they are not understood in restaurants/malls/etc. In Chile, for example, it is more likely to speak English fluently than being close to understand (fast) Brazilian Portuguese.

Brazilians can usually understand Spanish very well without having to use English (which very few Brazilians master). But for some reason the opposite is not true. But as few speak English here, it is more likely that they will insist and try to make themselves understood in Portuguese. As a Brazilian, I can say that it's quite strange to understand Spanish well and not be understood back.
@rodaross
@rodaross Жыл бұрын
@@thgbyo I have traced back it to three factors 1) Portuguese have more vowels that Spanish. So many words sound exactly the same, like grandma and grandpa. 2) Portuguese have reductions that are incompatible with those of Spanish, but not the other way around. 3) in the southern cone, Chile Argentina and Uruguay, hardly anyone have ever heard Portuguese. The famous songs sound like nothing.

@@rodaross I just know most brazilians think they can be understood by spanish speakers. If you go to any video about european portuguese or galician, they act like brazilian portuguese is a very different language, super easy for argentinians or spaniards to understand. And they also repeat all the time that "foreigners love the brazilian accent and prefer it over any other accent of the portuguese language" when in reality, foreigners who don't understand a word of portuguese will hardly tell any difference between the dialects.

@@rodaross In fact, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay have a very strong economic and cultural relationship with Brazil, especially with the south/southeast of the country. A good part of the Argentinean middle class, for example, spends their holidays on Brazilian beaches. Besides, many Brazilians go to Argentina to see snow and take cruises to Montevideo and Buenos Aires. On the other hand, Brazilians and Brazilian companies own an immense amount of land in Paraguay and Uruguay. Now the chile? It is not in the Prata basin, it is not part of Mercosur, that is, it is not part of the Brazilian economic and cultural zone of influence.

And excluding Guyana,, Suriname and French Guyana, whose populations are very small, all the other Souh American countries except Brazil speak Spanish (but they also speak other natiive Amerindian languages in places like Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru). Of course, if you consider Latin America is a whole, incuding Mexico and Central America, then the Spanish-speaking population is much bigger than the number of native Portuguese speakers.

Also the caimanes, anacondas and pirahnas said hello to us lots of times so being in the amazon is no easy deal. Iquitos, which is our biggest city near the amazon rain forest has no roads to connect it with the rest of the country so you have to go there by plane or by river boat. It takes hours. If you are aunt is South American, but speaks neither Spanish nor Portuguese, then she must be either from Guyana (where they speak English) or from Suriname (where they speak Dutch), but I doubt it. Are you sure that you are not confusing having South American ancestry with having been born and raised in South America? Another possibility is that your aunt might speak a native Amerindian language instead, but, even in that case, she should be bilingual in either Spanish or Portuguese if she grew up in South America, Also "Brasileño" is a Spanish word. Brazilians call themselves "Brasileiros" in Portuguese rather than "Brasileños". Generally speaking, most Brazilians can't speak either English or Spanish, but obviously it is easier for them to understand Spanish than English (without speaking or knowing either language) because Spanish and Portuguese are objectively very similar whereas English and Portuguese are not (or at least not so much). Brazilians whom you may meet outside Brazil are a biased sample, as most of them probably speak English too, which is not the case as I said for an average Brazilian who lives in Brazil and has never been to another country.

to be honest it dosen't bother me that pepole think that we speak spanish in Brazil, cause brazilian portuguese sounds similar to spanish, especially for a person who dosen't speak any of these languages... i like if i read a text in chinese and other in japanese, they will look the same to me.. the soccer thing is real, some pepole will get mad when someone say "all brazilians love soccer" but is true, of course there are some pepole that dosen't care at all about soccer (like me) but i know that i'm the exception, no the rule..... by the way, in the World Cup, when Brazil is playing, is very common this be treated as a day off in work, i think this dosen't happen in any other country carnaval is the same thing as soccer, most pepole like but the pepole who don't like will get mad when you treat this as a stereotype, but the thing is, in February besides the famous Carnaval parade in Rio with colorful pepole and floats, there are other types of carnaval happening at the same place all over the country, like street parties pretty much like Mardi Gras, and in northeast region of Brazil here are street parties with a giant truck with speakers and a stage on top with live performances from singers and music groups that goes down the avenue, we call it "trio elétrico" (electric trio), and i don't see pepole overseas talking that much about this the Rio x São Paulo thing also dosen't bother me at all, these are the 2 most famous cities in our country, so probably is the only two cities that a foreigner will know, and also, these are by some margin the 2 biggest cities in our country, so there is a good chance that if you meet a brazilian he/she will be from one of these 2 cities... and the amazon rain forest is actually an interesting assumption from foreigners, to the point that pepole that are really dumb or just trying to be offensive saying that we all live like Tarzan or whatever... the amazon rain forest for most brazilians is a thing as far for us than is for any foreigner, most of the population of brazil lives in the southeast and south region, and the forest is in the north region, and brazil is as large as continental US or the whole continent of europe, for sure a person from California or UK dosen't insert in their daily lives things that happen in Delaware or the Poland, is the same for us... even for a person from the city of Manaus, a 2 million+ pepole city in the middle of the amazon forest, the forest itself is not a thing from their daily lives, since the city is heavily urbanized, like any other major city in Brazil

Some people live there too, "ribeirinhos", with those houses with stilts because of the rivers and they even take school boats to go to school etc. Also a common travel destination for us is the Marajó island which is pretty big actually but has some forested and mangrove areas. Disregarding the Amazon Stereotype...The "samba " one is problably the mainly steriotype. In Brazil we have a lot of music genre and samba is not that popular. Althouth carnival is really something here, in each state or regions the "festival" is different ( for example frevo in some northeastern states) . Samba is more popular in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and it is in these cities that the stereotyped "famous" Brazilian carnival takes place.

I disagree. Samba is very popular in many parts of Brazil even though I personally don't like it either.
