Fantastic! the funny thing about these dreary old knots is that many of them are designed to get you out of a scrape when the wind has just ripped away the spars and you are trying to save the mast. So, in order to properly appreciate the use of knots you must tie them quickly in front of a huge fan in a freezer with lights out all the while being doused continually in frigid water!! How tame this sounds too compared with an evening at the Horn!

I feel like spending so much time tying and untying and examining all these knots and hitches; has helped to develop the logical side of my mind a bit more. The more complex the knot...the more my brain has to work. But an interesting thing has begun happening after weeks or months of watching, tying, untying and trying to understand the underlying principles... I can tie much more complex knots a lot faster and understand more knots at greater speed; and am able to group them in my mind. In short, I seem to be gaining a kind of intuition when it comes to knot tying. Additionally, I've been taking a look at rope magic tricks, and sailing specific knots... such as the cleat hitch. I'm learning WHY you tie things a certain way. I think that is really important for anything that affects your life; or your livelihood or someone you are watching over. Also... I've been taking a look and practicing various decorative knots and paracord braiding. I'm having a blast!

A few weeks ago, I was at a nautical themed restaurant which had a display of knots. I recognized all but the Spanish Bowline. I thought immediately: I wonder if Johnny Debt knows that one. Voila! I guess you read minds as well as teaching knots. Well done.

Holy crap! I remember playing with a loop of rope in elementary school (~20 years ago) and getting really fast at making a Jacob's Ladder. That feeling kicked into my fingers just now and I can tie this in about 5 seconds!

Wait, how do you know which leads to pull through?

Since you're already using twists to accomplish most I this, why not start with twisting a bight instead of passing over one end in the beginning?

Is it correct that at step 1 you can do left over right or right over left? It doesn’t matter right?

I like the Double Lineman's loop much more, the Spanish bowline is less secure - the size of the loops can change relative to each other when pulling hard on one loop. I also prefer double lineman's loop over the Double Alpine knot, seems to use less rope.

Actually, there is no difference whether the left line is over the left or the left is over the right.
