Im spanish and all I can say that we learned from the civil war is that guerrila tactics don't work at all if the enemy knows your capabilities and the terrain as well as you. Sorta like the best counter for guerrilla warfare is a good intelligence on them.

I would like one video about ground tactics used during the Spanish Civil war. I think it can be interesting since they had some important things like the uses of extended mechanised/armored units (2 brigades on the Republican side, 3 brigades on the Nationalist side), as well as some lessons about fighting in a Schweckpunkt. Also the question of modern urban warfare: the Spanish civil war was the first war with a modern urban battle, the battle for Madrid, which lasted about 3 years.

How about doing a whole episode about the 88 Flak? It would be interesting to know how effective it was in its original role (AA vs Fighters, Ground Support Planes, Bombers...) and what the numbers and statistics where on other targets (e.g. Tanks or Bunkers/Fortifications -> Sewastopol...) plus how it was utilized by the Wehrmacht in action (position and role during a battle)... And yeah I am German writing nouns with Capital Letters. ;-)

Even more so when you consider that just prior to the WWI there were Balkan wars in 1912 and 1913 in which in short period 250.000 people died and you could see usefulness of machingun and modern warfare tactics. And western powers ignored that wars since "...people always die like that in Balkans..."

Military History Visualized: You must read a lot! The intersection of brain and industrial might is the greatest lesson of WW2. Your vids often seem directed at this intersection and are amazingly useful, even for today. "Institutional barriers and/or routes to learning" or "Highly placed Egos" could be the title of this vid. WW2 was a showpiece of national and international industrial power and therefore a perfect lab for assessing the political powers that directed industry and overall military strategy.

1:05 I love your way of mispronouncing Guadalajara, it sounds even better than the correct pronunciation. Also that battle was a land ambush taking cover in a dense fog. The Italians attacked an entrenched position (ironically also defended by Italians: it was defended by the "Garibaldi" battalion made out of exiled Italians) during a fog and were surprised due to Republican air superiority and great defensive positions.

"Hold on to your tea, baguette, or AR-15" Well, the only one of those I don't have at my desk right now is a baguette.

It wasn't just the Spanish Civil War tuned out by the US Army Air Corps leadership. They forced out Claire Chennault before that war. He went on to lead the AVG Flying Tigers squadrons to a tremendous kill ratio over the Japanese air forces in China even as the Air Corps, Navy, and Marine Corps pilots were being mowed down by the Zeros and Oscars over the Pacific Ocean. Chennault trained the Flying Tigers to use hit-and-run air tactics against the Japanese while the rest of the American air forces of 1941 - 1942 had to unlearn the obsolete doctrine of dogfighting as if they were on even or superior terms with the Japanese. After the bitter lessons through Midway in June 1942, the American aviation leadership eventually changed their doctrine during the brutal battles of the Solomon Islands campaign. For more information, look into the "Cactus Air Force, the "Thatch Weave" and the "boom-and-zoom" use of P-38 Lightning fighters in the South Pacific. I'm really more interested in what lessons were learned by the German and Soviet leadership from their participation in the Spanish Civil War. I believe Rommel used the 88mm flak guns to destroy superior Soviet-made tanks in Spain, only to repeat the exercise against the French Char-B and British Matilda tanks in May 1940. Guderian and others had to repeat this exercise again in 1941 versus the Soviet BT tanks' successor - the T-34. It wasn't until the Panzer IV's were finally fitted with long-barreled 75mm guns in 1942 that the Germans could become somewhat less reliant on overcoming the superior Soviet tanks through superior combined arms tactics. Maybe I missed it, but I would love to see a video here on the development of Finnish air force tactics that allowed them to achieve incredible kill ratio superiority over the VVS (Soviet air force) during the 1939 - 1940 Winter War. The Finns had a piecemeal collection of aircraft that had been mostly cast off by the major powers (e.g. the American-made Brewster Buffalo fighter considered a death trap by American and RAF pilots after heavy losses against the Japanese.) Yet, the Finnish pilots inflicted tremendous losses on the Soviets and were able to sustain valuable reconnaissance over the Karelian Isthmus. I was also intrigued at the Finns' emphasis on logistics during the Winter War. Their soldiers received awards and bonuses for destroying field kitchens as their role in keeping the troops fed and warm in subfreezing temperatures was better understood by the Finnish leadership than by the Soviets. If you are interested, find a copy of "Frozen Hell," an excellent book on the Winter War. Yes, I have seen your video on the Finnish motti tactics. Very good work. I'm a history nerd and could do with a bit less humor in these videos as it elicits so many comments that really add nothing to anyone's understanding of the subject matter. I chuckle at some of the jokes, but tire of looking for comments of substance. I guess the game is all about collecting eyeballs and clicks, so I will learn to skim the comments faster.

The Spanish Civil War was important for a geopolitical reason too: namely that Europe and America were less worried about Hitler than they were about Stalin. All European countries ended up either directly or indirectly supporting the Nationalists while the USSR supported the Republic. The only other government which lent any support to the Republic was that of Leon Blum. The vast majority of the attention in Europe in the 1930s was focussed on the expansion of communism and some, particularly the British, were completely blindsided by it. Fortunately, the British parliament - led at that time by Neville Chamberlain - chose not to listen too closely to the paranoia of the Foreign Office, read the situation correctly and went about rearming anyway.

Excellent video. Loved the Fighter Escort. Interesting how the USAF still does not consider ground attack that important. For years now they have tried to eliminate the A10 Warthog and would not allow anyone else to pickup this job. Makes you wonder if the UAVs will pick up the ground attack role.

Yes another video please! Italy also made mistakes, kept producing CV33 (tankettes for infantry support and recon only armed with MGs) after they were badly defeated by T-26 (light tanks with AT guns), and they even kept developing new biplanes (The CR 42 for example).

Well the lessons that could be learnt from the Spanish Civil War are lessons on Aggressive Aireal Campaigns with bombings. There was little development of uses of fighters in the interwar period as fighter tactics are comparatively less complex then Bombing tactics. Bomber Escorts where only developed during the Battle of Britain and where not perfected until 1943/44 when the P51D came into service where you had a moderately maneuverable Fighter that could climb to the same alt as the bombers they're escorting and have the fuel to stay with the bombers all the time.

Was there any note by the US Naval air Corp on the lessons of the Spanish Civil War? I know that battleships were the doctrinal main force of the pre ww2 navy, but after the disabling of most of the us Pacific fleets battleships and the effectiveness of carrier aviation, the naval air corp became the primary strike arm of the navy.

Whenever I talk to my friends about British Army Command, I can never let go of the fact that they refused to allow trroops to use AA guns as AT guns (such as the 88mm was used, and as the 2cm AA guns were used as anti-infantry) because "that's not the task that the gun was assigned". Gotta love British High Command.

I remember the British series "A Piece of Cake" where one of the pilots was an expatriate American who flew in the Spanish Civil War. For the most part the higher ups dislike his knowledge based on his experience but later it does seem to show through in his fighting. Granted in TV shows one does have to be careful regarding historical accuracy - the old saying never let the facts get in the way of a good story (something that irritates historians to no end), but after seeing this it does make sense that there would be opposition from the old school officers to a foreigner with experience different than their doctrines.
