Join us for a Spanish food review as we eat Paella Valenciana in Valencia, Spain for lunch. For the four of us we ordered appetizers in the form of tapas which included bread, jamón serrano and patatas bravas. Our mains were a Valencian Paella along with a seafood fideuà. Overall, it was a fantastic meal. Paella is a must try dish if you're visiting Valencia, Spain and we'd highly recommend this restaurant to try it.

Spanish Food Review - Eating Paella Valenciana in Valencia, Spain Travel Video Transcript:
It is lunchtime here in Valencia, Spain and of course we had to order Paella. This is considered the National Dish of Spain by foreigners but Spaniards will tell you this is more of a regional specialty. We've ordered two paellas. The first one is the Valencian one and then we've also ordered that is called Fideuà which is a noodle Paella which comes from Alicante. That is going to be coming in 20 minutes. In the meantime we've ordered some tapas. We have the Jamón serrano, we also have patatas bravas and we have some loaves of bread fresh out of the oven. This is going to be tasty.
La Paella Valenciana. Oh! Wow! Paella es la grande.
The food is here and we are going to start off with the Valencian Paella (Valenciana). Let's talk about the ingredients. This one comes with chicken. Rabbit meat. And it also has snails and it has green beans and it has cardo beans and what is this rosemary right here? This looks so good. I'm going to scoop some up. And the rice is cooked in saffron. That gives it its yellow color. And we should also talk about the size of the pan. The waiter was just explaining like this looks massive. It is only for 2 people but what they do is if they have more people eating out of it like 3 or 4 they just keep adding more rice and it will be thicker.
Let's try this. The meat is crispy and golden. So is the rice. I love it when you get the golden rice like that. That is the best part for sure.
What I find so neat about Paella is that there is so many different kinds you can have from vegetables to seafood to this traditional Valencian one. You can have mixed ones as well. Yeah, there was one with chicken. There was one on the menu that had black squid ink. We were eying that as well.
Next up this is the alternative to Paella. This is Alicante's version. Yeah. And it is made with noodles. That is right. Fideuà. But before I even talk about this I have to first talk about the Paella now. For the four of us to finish that I give us an A+ because that wasn't easy. That was a lot of food. And now we're moving on to round 2. Yes. We have another big big pot full of food to eat. Yeah look at those. I'm just going to use the spoon here. So this one has um prawns. It has cuttlefish, it has a different kind of noodle. Mussels. Oh mussels too. Red peppers. It has got a bit of everything. It smells really good. It has like a very strong fish seafood smell.
Time to tell us the price. We ate so much there is going to be no dinner tonight. That was just a wonderful meal. Just a great place. Really nice service. Great quality. So the meal in total came to 82 Euros. Just over 20 Euros per person. That included 2 really nice appetizers, complimentary bread. A liter of water to share and of course those two main dishes. So that was just outstanding value. We are all so full. We are going to be in full on siesta mode. If you're visiting here in Valencia, Spain definitely have to try the Paella and Fideuà. And also you should consider coming to this restaurant (Ocho y Medio) too.
This is part of our Travel in Spain video series showcasing Spanish food, Spanish culture and Spanish cuisine as well as Valencian food, Valencian culture and Valencian cuisine.

Dear Sam and Audrey. You don't know me from Adam, but you did play a significant role in my recent life. Over most of the past decade I was taking care of first my mother then my father in their old age. Grim work, though I don't regret for a second doing it. I assumed control over my father's business, and to put it simply, I've been busy and became a bit worn out. A few months ago, knowing that a little pause in the goings-on was going to soon happen, I started thinking about travel. Prior to my parents' ill health, I had enjoyed travel abroad, but that was put on hold for obvious reasons. So when the opportunity to again travel presented itself, I started exploring the possibilities. I stumbled on your vlogs and latched onto the ones about Kiev. The ball started rolling, and I worked out a month-long trip to Kiev, Chisinau, Brasov and Budapest. I'm writing you now on my last day in Budapest, finishing a nice red wine and some kick-ass cabbage rolls. To come to the point, you helped inspire me. I even used your suggestion to use AirBnB (so cool) and to visit some of the places you mentioned (Opanas is the bomb!) Thanks. Just thanks for helping me heal and regain life.

Thank you very much! It sounds like you've been through a lot and you certainly deserve to take care of yourself as well. That is wonderful you're able to travel now as well. It is very honorable that you took care of your parents like that. That is wonderful to hear you've had good experiences with AirBnB and especially a nice meal at Opanas.

Just a tip, you normally eat fideuà with Allioli, it is the most typical way to eat it. For people come to Spain, also bear in mind, that you can find paella almost anywhere, but it is the traditional dish of Valencia and where they make it best. In other regions sometimes they use ingredients which are a complete invention of what a paella should have.

The thinner the better for paella, if more people is eating then a bigger pan is used to be able to keep it thin and have the “socarrat”, which is the crust that forms on the bottom of the pan! We use a 100 cm pan for 4 people at home! 😃

Paella comes from the latin word Patella. Both french and spanish and catalan (and the catalan dialect valenciano) are derived from vernacular (= so called vulgar) latin of the late roman empire. There are actually very few words in spanish,/castellano that were taken from modern french.

LAKHDAR BEDJOUTI The use of spices especially Azafrán(saffron) in this case and in the spanish cusine in general is certainly due to the arab/ moorish influence .

There are many products that the Arabs introduced in the Iberian peninsula: eggplant, spinach, sugar cane, rice, apricots and citrics among others. It's true that olives have been cultivated in Spain from pre historic times, but the olive culture increased considerably under the Al-Andalus empire. The introduction of irrigation ditches, cisterns and draining systems contributed largely to it. But it wasn't only the olive production that increased with these improvements, but all kinds of crops.

Unfortunately, Valencia is not the best place to eat legit spicy patatas bravas as the name suggests; we mainly just use alioli (garlic mayonnaise) and perhaps a sprinkling of smoked paprika. They are good but they are not remotely spicy. However, you can ask the waiter for some Tabasco to give them the necessary kick! A good place to eat Paella is at the Albufera Lagoon where the rice paddies are; where the dish was actually born! Did you know that originally Paella was made with nice and fat juicy rats (known as Rata de Marjal) that feed of the rice in the paddies? lol It's impossible to find in restaurants now though. I'd eat it but I know it'd be a hard sell! lol Are you guys still in Valencia?

Ketchup on patatas bravas?? Where? Was this Valencia in USA? The sauce is pimenton based. Pimenton, broth and onions that is pulsed. Not ketchup.

I've never eaten snail before. Actually, I've never heard about a paella with snails and rabbit, that's interesting. Only saw paellas with seafood. I'd like to try the snails although Sam seemed not to have enjoyed them a lot LOL

You were lucky, that place seems a tourist trap, but results to be pretty decent on price. About the paella, you are supposed to eat directly from it, if you want, and with spoon accepted. About the quantity, a good restaurant have many paella sizes, so they choose the right one to serve a thin layer of rice uniformly cooked and flavoured. At home this is more difficult, but the explanation they give you is horrible, just adding more rice and meat? No, it's not like that.

You have made a big big mistake in your video....fideua doesnt come from Alicante AT ALL....fideuá was invented in Gandia , one village 60 kms at the south of Valencia, in the same valencia province..not in Alicante. And was invented in the 40´s of las century
