Me too! I love how precise she is with her words. A lot of Spanish speakers tend to let one word merge with the next and it becomes very difficult to follow

This was good. It is a hard topic for English speakers. One thing I might add that can be helpful: although in a given situation it may seem like you can choose either fue or era, depending on what else you say in the sentence, only one of them will actually be correct. For example, if you ever give specific details of time, in the same sentence, you *must* use fue: "Clinton fue presidente por tres años" is correct, while "Clinton era presidente por tres años" is *never correct*.

2:22 A que pretérito estas refiriendo aquÍ? Pretérito imperfecto, pretérito perfecto compuesto...? Hay varios.
@nicosmind3
@nicosmind3 4 жыл бұрын
Wait, i thought the imperfect was for things that were that way, and continue on to have that feature. So the house was white and still is. La casa era blanca. But just say its color changed to blue, do you still say era? I thought you would then say la casa fue blanca pero ahora es azul Im so confused, have i been wrong this whole time?
@KingBuddha84
@KingBuddha84 4 жыл бұрын
The imperfect is also used to say “ used to be”. So you can say la casa era blanca sin embargo ahora es azul - The house USED to BE white, however now it’s blue.

I'm sorry my lesson wasn't clear enough for you amigo. I think you might get confused when we use the imperfect for when we want to say 'used to' which is the case of your example, but a better way I teach my students is that if you're describing something in the past, talking about a characteristic or description, then you use the imperfecto. "la casa era blanca pero ahora es azul' (we're describing the colour of the house in the past: the house was/used to be white but now it's blue). You can use the pretérito if you have a specified period of time and in certain contexts, for example: la casa fue blanca por muchos años hasta que la pintaron de azul (the house was white for many years before they painted it blue). I hope it makes sense now.

Now you are bringing in a whole new topic: whether to user SER or ESTAR. My general rule: when you are describing something AND alluding to your personal experience of it, ESTAR is more common (at least in Mexico). La comida estuvo rica = The food was tasty (to me. In other words: I'm trying to tell you how I personally *experienced* the food). The comida era buena = It was good food (of high quality) but this just states a fact about the qualities of the food; it doesn't say anything about your experience of the food.
