We think humans have created huge amounts of information. But in fact, it's a tiny amount compared to the information needed to describe the universe. Using beautiful slow-motion footage of a water droplet, presenter Jim Al-Khalili gives us a sense of just how much of what goes on in the physical world is hidden from us.

34:57 “[Alan] Turing’s brilliant mind saw that any calculation had two aspects: the data and the instructions for what to do with the data.” It’s actually fascinating that it took until the mid-1950s for someone to come up with that abstract idea since Joseph Marie Jacquard’s punch cards, demonstrated in 1801-so, exactly a century and a half earlier-worked on essentially the same principle.

Words ate the applied intelligence begotten by speech, not "language."The Greeks, having slaves could early prove that the notion of intelligence must give way to the essence of science, communication. Do not confuse technique with science. Power and language, will not trump true loyalty to the future of our spaceship; only the comprehensive use of technique will transcend the 0 sum degeneracy of nation states which will persist, a good thing as regards the diversity of cultures. Information from data is a question. Science, the greatest institution to emerge, cannot conflate information with knowledge and as learning increases exponentially for the masses, speech will trump language, science will trump technique, win- win will es ill not @@bitwarper -ZZZZ8 ---

Sure, some people don't have easy access, but there are also people that are unable to grapple with a lot of concepts. What are you going to do with them, in regards to your "requirement"? I've not read all of the comments of course. But, when thinking of Maxwell's demon, there is an obvious expenditure of energy to me. He opens a portal to allow the atom to cross. He has to expend some energy in some sort of way to open and close the portal. Probably much more than the atom uses to glide through the opening. I know it's just a thought experiment. But the conversations about such things is what makes it so great.

I don't think it's so much the physical actions. More that you can "process" order in the universe at no cost. Basically he was imagining a computer, and saying they don't cost anything to computate. The door and dividing molecules, could be any task it's doing, doesn't even have to be physical

All of this is, to a great extent, already contained in the theory of hylomorphism. Over 2,000 years ago, Aristotle said that all that there is in the universe is a compound of matter (hyle) and form (morphe). Matter is *informed* and that’s the only way it actually is real. Reality is hylomorphic. And as a bonus, another way to name form is by a Greek word that will be familiar to you: energeia.

@@thecrichters8680 THE CLEAR AND UNIVERSAL MATHEMATICAL PROOF THAT E=MC2 IS F=MA: Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy, AS E=MC2 IS F=MA. INSTANTANEITY is FUNDAMENTAL to the FULL and proper understanding of physics/physical experience. Ultimately and truly, TIME is possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. The ultimate unification of physics/physical experience combines, BALANCES, AND includes opposites, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. GREAT. It ALL makes perfect sense. THINK !!! The Earth that undergoes time DILATION IS thus represented (ON BALANCE) as what is A POINT in the night sky, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. (So, notice that the BLUE SKY IS no longer visible. Think.) E=mc2 IS F=ma. It is FULLY proven. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Alas, the INTEGRATED EXTENSIVENESS of THOUGHT (AND description) is improved in the truly superior mind. I have truly, CLEARLY, AND MATHEMATICALLY unified physics/physical experience. OVERLAY what is THE EYE in BALANCED RELATION to/WITH what is THE EARTH. (Notice the black space of THE EYE, AND the DOME of a person's eye is ALSO visible.) THE EARTH is ALSO blue. Again, E=mc2 IS F=ma. The stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky. Time dilation proves that E=mc2 is DIRECTLY and fundamentally derived from F=ma, AS electromagnetism/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. It ALL makes perfect sense. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. BALANCE AND completeness go hand in hand. By Frank DiMeglio

@@kirbymanlegro8201 I think it must be that 'order' is the ratio between energy and matter. Because matter is the concentration of energy; order would be more matter relative to energy in a given system. im 61 even during my lifetime information usage and storage has grown massively. even the ability to contact others anywhere in the world has grown very much alongside data storage and usage. i built my own first computer in the 80's with a hard disk of 20 mb and that was large at that time, for a personal computer at least. my phone has gone to a dial phone through tough button to mobile that i can use anywhere in the world that has a mobile exchange/masts. i can recall from 1969 the moon landings just, along with the voyager journey out to the other planets, and able to watch then live here in the uk via satellite. today we can even know exactly where we are at anytime via satellites. where all this will be in the next decades is anyone's guess some items will come and go fast and others will stay around just getting better faster and more intelligent. sadly i know my end is coming in the next decades which one is anyone's guess, and ill not be around to witness where we are heading in humanities coming years and development. although going by humanities past and a knowledge that we can destroy the whole population by the press of a button, a decade or 2 of piece may be wishful thinking, going by all the wars mankind has fought.

Right, the amount of information needed to describe the universe is so great that a human mind cannot cannot imagine it. For instance: there are more atoms in approx. 3 grains of sand than all the grains of sand on earth. And we now know that atoms are made up of even smaller particles to an exponential level. To describe the amount of information needed to describe the universe is titanic but that word doesn't do it justice. This video is one of the best I've ever seen. It explains the history of something which is paramount in human existence. One thing I disagree with is at 52:21 when he say the demon sitting on top of the two connected boxes letting the fast atoms move to one side and the slow ones to the other side. He says that the demon can create order without expending any energy. If the demon has to open and close a slight opening between the two boxes to make this happen that takes energy.

People wonder if intelligence would always arise, and I think so. I suspect it's an inevitable result of life finding a way when there is enough time in the right conditions. And when he says, 'language is a way for ideas to exist outside of the brain', this makes me think of the fractal nature of the universe, maybe it is similar with matter, biological life, and these things are a way for some fundamental aspect of the universe to exist in another state.

I also have delved into the question of finding order while often struggling in a midst of disorder. So, I tried to find some method of comparison when studying what are described as fractals, often visible described by how snowflakes infinitely different from each other. So I thought of reducing my thoughts to words..."The sheer periodicity of the random observable events, although from many perspectives appearing to hold ordered form are and forever will remain in a state of chaos.". This easily applies to the art painting style of 'dotism,' the current technological ability to map the location, path and physical structure of sub-atomic particles, and even the explainable and unexplainable aspects of a life long lived during subjectively defined periods of human progress.
