Spartacus Love Theme (Alex North)

Love theme from Spartacus, composed by Alex North. Surely one of the great love themes in all of cinema (matched only by John Williams' love theme for the 1978 Superman movie, in my opinion). This is the best played and best recorded version of the theme that I've yet heard; no idea which orchestra this is, no idea who conducted them.

A very nice version. Interesting how it's often played faster, or slower. The way the minor keys "soar" is particularly beautiful. IMHO by far the best thing that the brilliant Alex North ever composed (although I also love the "barge" theme from "Cleopatra"). One of my favorite pieces of music. So magnificent.

Magical piece of music in its own right but when it begins to soar at the climax of such a great movie, when Batiatus double takes to see Spartacus on the cross (which change of expression alone won Ustinov his best supporting actor gong I reckon), it makes me think it's the most moving end to any film I've ever seen. 14 Oscar nominations for Alex North and no outright win (albeit a lifetime achievement award eventually came his way)... How this score didn't blow the others out of the water I'll never know!

@MiloDC And the fact that you a a listener without formal musical training do not hear it as "dissonant" or unusual proves my point and is a tribute to the composer's skill. Much of it is created in the underlying counterpoint, but consider what happens at 0:47. Someone used to standard harmonies such as were used in Mozart's time would find it jarring - though Debussy or Ravel would not (in fact, I hear a great deal of late Romanticism and French Impressionism influences here.

That's what I love about this composition. It takes a very simple but stirring theme and puts in a bunch of harmonic (emotional) contexts that mirror the emotional narrative of the film.

@MiloDC I could of course do an extensive harmonic analysis here (I have a degree in music composition and theory), but it probably wouldn't be all that interesting to anyone but myself and a few musical eggheads... Better to just enjoy it for what it is... ;)

Who could be the one person who leaned forward with a degree of effort, and thumbed this down? Perhaps a woman was hurt very badly by a man who was the clone of Kirk Douglas and this song is just too painful to listen to? Perhaps a descendent of the Tony Curtis (Singer of Songs) character who was wronged by the Roman in his private bath.
