Here's a cool note about the attention to detail in "Breaking Bad" production. After Hank gets the phone call telling him he has one minute before the brothers get to him, we see on the dash board the time is 3:07. That number is not an accident because this is Season 3 Episode 7!!

Tying back in to the S2 finale and the theme of consequences: to borrow a term from a James Bond movie, Walter is the author of all of Hank's pain - directly or otherwise. It's so easy to get caught up in each protagonist's motivations - that's the beauty and genius of the show.

I hope it clicked by the end that Walt sabotaged Gale - he didn't make a mistake. It had nothing to do with "missing" Jesse. He was perfectly happy working in a professional lab environment with a man who respected the science as much as he did. Walt's awkwardness towards Gale at the end was precisely because he had no good reason. The problem was Jesse was threatening to blow everything up after Hank took to him. The only way Walt saw to rectify the situation - short of going with Saul's more permanent solution - was bringing Jesse back into the fold. It was top tier manipulation when he told Jesse his meth was as good as his.
@Col_Fragg
@Col_Fragg 7 ай бұрын
I think this is true. However, I think a big part of Walt's actions are motivated by the fact that Walt cares about Jessie and this about looking out for Jessie as much as it is looking out for Walt's self interest.
@srottfaen
@srottfaen 7 ай бұрын
I disagree with this. I think it totally had an element of "missing Jesse" even though is wasn't the main motivator of asking him back. I think Gale was TO perfect. A peer and a professional and thus not being someone Walter could feel superior to or manipulate as easily. Also remember that Walter is a teacher, and the teacher, student dynamic between Walter and Jesse is one of the few things he actually enjoys. Gale was to good. Walter had nothing to teach him and I believe he hated that.

One thing I've always hated about Jesse is blaming everyone else for his choices. He knew Jane was in recovery, but he didn't care. She tried to help him, but he allowed her to fall off the wagon. He is partly to blame for her death. Not all Walt's fault.
@playonesong5430

@@JoshuaMartian-go3tm thank you for this point of view. totally agree. Jesse likes to shift responsibility for his decisions. And many viewers ignore it because of their sympathy for him. He could have refused to work with Walt at the very beginning. He could have stopped working with him many times. But he continued... continued... continued. He wanted to earn money. And he's never been a good guy. Even before Heisenberg, he brewed and sold meth. He also poisoned the younger generation and destroyed families. Therefore, when people see the good in him, but only the bad in Walt, it annoys me.

17:19 *Pudgey is right. Walt is most certainly not missing Jesse.* He recognizes that Jesse is a problem because he could easily ruin his life. So he has to find a solution. He could tell Gus about it, and of course Gus would have no qualms about killing Jesse if he threatens to expose him. But that would be too drastic for Walt. That's why he decides on the "middle ground" solution, which is replacing Gale with Jesse. Even though Gale did nothing wrong, Walt finds a false pretext to get rid of him.
@tarukaja8
@tarukaja8 7 ай бұрын
I don't agree about Gale. Gale dit nothing "wrong", sure, but when Walt saw that Gale had already done part of the meth work before he arrived, Walt also understood that Gale was here to learn his recipe (which was Gus's intent), and recognized that he could be replaced eventually, so that's one of the reasons he didn't want Gale anymore. I also think that he IS missing Jesse, subconsciously. I don't understand why so many people think Walter was fully evil even at that point in the show... he still cares, even though he's a prideful, jaded drug manufacturer, and even though it's maybe not the main raison he wanted Jesse to work with him again.
@jasonrd316
@jasonrd316 7 ай бұрын
@tarukaja2975 Yeah, disagree. Walt was fine...he was nitpicking because he need to find any reason at all to try and get Pinkman in there. If Gus wanted Gale to learn the recipe and take Walt out, he wouldn't have made the call, and more importantly he wouldn't have allowed Walt to use Pinkman at all. You missed the mark here.
@Mic-Mak
@Mic-Mak 7 ай бұрын
@@tarukaja8 Walt wanted to quit. He was offered to work indefinitely for Gus, but he refused. He agreed to continue only for 3 months. He had to be persuaded. Gus is not hiding that Gale is meant to replace him. It's obvious. And Walt should accept that, since he said he had no intention to continue beyond the 3 months. Unless you're suggesting Walt is lying, which he didn't seem to be. Also, even if Walt was healthy and agreed to work indefinitely for Gus, it would make complete sense that any assistant of his would learn from him. Even unconsciously. After all, that's exactly what Jesse did. Even Gus has not plans for Gale, and Gale had no ambitions beyond being an assistant, he would still learn from Walt by osmosis. I don't deny that Walt cares about Jesse, but it's often in a condescending paternalistic way. Walt is also selfish. If he truly cared about Jesse he would have understood losing Combo was a big deal. He would have appreciated, it could be a trigger for Jesse to relapse into meth or worse.
@vn5774

@@jasonrd316 Also, Walt was extremely irritated about something that has nothing to do with Gale, mainly that Jesse has become a problem. He knows full well he is misdirecting his anger. He should really be angry at himself. He had plenty of opportunities to mend his relationship with Jesse. Yes, Jesse is immature, but Walt is wise enough not to stoop to his level of pettiness, and yes he keeps doing it.He could have complimented Jesse on the blue meth and asked him kindly to wait. He could have also showed some grace when he told Jesse Gus was trying to get to him and offered him a job. I'm not saying it would have fixed things, but it could have contained the damage.

Walter doesn't miss Jessie at all. He wants to be able to control him again, that he doesn't talk to the cops and that he earns money himself again, so that he lets go of Hank and doesn't blackmail Walter either. That's why he's looking for little things to get rid of his new favorite lab assistant. You could hear pretty clearly that of course Guz called to warn Hank. The twins are, after all, a thorn in his butt.
@playonesong5430

It's absurd. Walt doesn't need to control Jesse. He was just saving Hank. Because he felt guilty for what happened to him (for lying about Marie at least which led to Jesse's beating and possible charges and possible end for DEA career). And besides, this is his relative on his wife's side, whom he has known for years. Why would he even control Jesse when he has Saul to cover for him in legal matters, Mike and Gas to solve other issues if necessary... The only reason to work with Jesse is to save Hank. Let's say he wouldn't do anything. Hank would have been fired. He would have been charged.

To be fair, Jesse would've never met Jane if it wasn't for Walt. He would still be driving around his Captain Crunch bouncing car, slinging his chili-P dope, dressing like a wigger still, addicted, lame, etcetera. Jesse has matured as a result of working with Walt, however painful the process has been. Plus, he now OWNS the house his aunt "left him" by legally giving it to his parents. Jesse has come a long way as a result of hooking up with the Great Heisenberg, even if it's been a rough soul-crushing ride. Yeah, he was probably happier being his old dumb self I imagine. Back in those days you could just buy a prepaid phone with cash at the store - totally untraceable, unless you could go far back enough to see the transaction on security footage, but that phone Saul used to call Hank with must've been way older than any footage that would've been kept. This was before digital storage of footage so they didn't just have endless years and years of every second in their stores. Nowadays, though, make sure you're not only wearing a disguise if you (can still even) buy a prepaid phone in a store but that you get away from the store and out of town in a vehicle or by a means that can't be traced back to you. Then you'll only be able to use that phone for a month or whatever before you have to re-up the service on it either by buying more minutes at a store with cash, or paying with a debit/credit card and connecting yourself to it. You can buy those prepaid debit cards with cash though, I wonder if you can re-up a prepaid phone with them. Some of them require associating your identity with them, or they have a $500 limit or something like that. Yeah, nowadays, it's basically impossible to get away with anything - even making a phone call.

There was an film gig ad with only the briefest information in Albuquerque Craigslist - a call for beige taupe neutral color cars, pay $80 a day for two days. They also hired all the car owners as extras to make sure we couldn’t move the cars, lol. Filming was in a huge circuit city parking lot but all the extras were inside the empty building for 14 hours all day with NOTHING to do. They only needed a few extras chosen at 5am on the 1st day. Everyone else played cards while I went stir crazy. We had no idea what was being filmed outside and what a totally EPIC episode this would be!!! I hadn’t even seen the show but I had heard it was awesome. The only actor I saw was Hank inbetween a scene. He was holding the blue purple bouquet 💐. He had a huge grin on his face. I got the impression he felt like the luckiest guy alive to be a short stocky bald guy with his looks in a wildly popular show - having fun and getting paid for it. Of course I was a huge fan of the show after that which was only on TV once a week!!

I'm only 3 minutes in but Spartan mentioned that Hank was happy to hunt down Tuco. But if you remember when he was getting his coworkers excited for searching for him, he walked out and told Gomez "We'll never find that guy". I may be confusing that with another character, but either way Hank actually didn't think they had a high chance of finding some of the higher up people they were searching for. When Hank did end up running into Tuco on accident, he was very shocked and not prepared. Which led to his future PTSD/Panic Attacks or whatever.

We start the episode with a "Kind of" Better caul Saul moment :) Dont know if thats a show with good metric to react, but one thing is certain... Thats one of the greatest shows coming out in the last 20 years! ... On another note... Hank and Marie are the only good guys around!... THATS MIKE that you are trying to remember the name, Pudgey! :) ... HE'S a "WEAPON"! Spartan did good, but Pudgey comments and understanding of the emotional relations between the characters in the series, really shined in this episode!... Good review! Aaron Paul performance in this episode AGAIN shows how great he is standing side by side with Brian Cranston. This is of course nothing we are not used to see... And of course we cant forget the number of awards they won just between both of them. SO just to put that in consideration here's the wiki list of that, which iam sure that those who like me have seen this in a weekly basis thru 5 seasons already know! From Wikipedia: ~ "The series received numerous awards and nominations, including 16 Primetime Emmy Awards and 58 nominations, including winning for Outstanding Drama Series in 2013 and 2014. It also won two Peabody Awards, one in 2008 and one in 2013." ~ "For his portrayal of Walter White, Bryan Cranston won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series four times, in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2014. Cranston also won the TCA Award for Individual Achievement in Drama in 2009 and the Satellite Award for Best Actor - Television Series: Drama in 2008, 2009, and 2010, as well as the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series and the Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television in 2012." ~ "Aaron Paul won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2010, 2012, and 2014. Paul also won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor on Television in 2010 and 2012." ~ "Anna Gunn won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2013 and 2014. For his work on season four, ~ Giancarlo Esposito won the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series." ~ "In 2010 and 2012, Breaking Bad won the TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Drama, as well as the TCA Award for Program of the Year in 2013. In 2009 and 2010, the series won the Satellite Award for Best Television Series - Drama, along with the Saturn Award for Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series in 2010, 2011, and 2012. The series won the Writers Guild of America Award for Television: Dramatic Series in both 2012 and 2013." ~ "In 2013, it was named No. 13 in a list of the 101 Best-Written TV Series of All Time by the Writers Guild of America and won, for the first time, the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. Overall, the show has won 110 industry awards and has been nominated for 262" Yup they are all great ... But still "Better Caul Saul" for me is on a different layer of depth, not better or worst, just a different one that gives meaning to certain aspects of truth, ethics and morality that we see unfolding thru the character of Saul Goodman, over the six-year period prior to the events of Breaking Bad and then after that... And its an essay to the statement that deep down people dont really change, its always an happy lie to think so, and sometimes works but normally it doesnt... And that is the tragedy, despite the efffort that sometimes might or could even exist in trying to change!... Its the tragedy of the human condition!... Despite efforts of what we know is not the right course of action, despite any development or enlightment that might exist, humanity will always repeat is mistakes under different circustances but repeat them no matter what! Thats why Saul's brother was always right in its assessement of is brother Jimmy AKA Saul! ... "Its all Good man!"... No! sometimes most of the times, its never good, its tragic!

Jesse can never see that someone cares about him he thinks because his parents are tough love on him that they don't care he thinks that because Walter cuts him down all the time and he selfish means he doesn't care about him but Walt did he thought of him as a nephew but never told Jesse that he would save his life and call him son but Jesse never saw that he cares for him because he was always being manipulated by Walter he just didn't know how to care for Jesse in the right way hr had his own odd way of caring about him. Jesse just wantes him to be proud of him he finally applied himself and created meth almost as good as Walts and instead of being proud of him he got jealous and cut him down and called him a junkie loser maybe it was the bad day Walt had but hin doing thag to Jesse in the state that he is in emotionally and excepting himself as the bad guy thinking cooking meth is all he is good at doing Walt acting the way he did to hin really hurt Jesse because he looks up ti him he wants hia approval

no, Spartan, Walt brought Jesse in not because he misses him, but because Jesse threatened the fuck out of him. why do you think Walt was so angry and tense in the first half of the episode? he's contemplating what to do with the Jesse problem. up until this point he's also had a good relationship with Gale, probably likes him a lot as a protege who worships him, yet he's so aggressive towards Gale because he's already thinking he needs to shut him out to bring in Jesse.

My sweet summer children, you're buying right into the narrative. First, you're right about the writing really breaking molds and writing their character with more depth than the tropes we're introduced to them from the beginning. Walter is more than just the smart nerdy teacher, Skyler is more than just the stay-at-home mom, Hank is more than just strict DEA agent and Marie is more than just the judgmental sister-in-law. They all are more human than that with range. Same with Jesse, Gus, Saul and Mike (the guy's name you kept forgetting.) However, you're buying into Jesse's narrative. Jesse isn't stable. His estrangement with his own family started way before Walter. His relationship with Jane was doomed to happen. Walter didn't kill Jane, he just didn't save her. Junkies OD all the time and laying on your side only helps if you don't move. They were bound to OD eventually even if Walter didn't roll Jane over. Walter was trying to save Jesse and still is. What I think you're forgetting is the arc of Jesse's character. He's impulsive, angry, hurt and prideful person. He isn't good at this side of business, Tuco was supposed to show you that Jesse isn't a top dog and in this line of business, people die. Jesse would have been killed multiple times over if not for Walter. Shit, Walter isn't that much better and if not for his genius would have been killed as well. That's the whole point Walter keeps trying to teach Jesse, but he can't see past his own rage and pride. The idea is to understand your weakness, not to let them defeat you and definitely not to ignore them, but to overcome them. You do that by understanding your blind spots and look out for them. If you're angry and do things impulsive you have to be able to stop yourself in the moment of anger and recognize you're compromised to reset your anger before making a decision. That's why he called Walter back at a later time when his pride and anger had passed. Walter, forgiving and being compassionate, didn't take the deal off the table because he cares for Jesse. When Tuco hurt Jesse, he came knocking. When Tuco wanted to kill Jesse, he vouched for Jesse. When Gus wanted nothing to do with Jesse, he stood up for him. Gus could have killed Jesse for using Walter's formula. Remember what happened with Combo, you step into the wrong terf and you're dead. The only reason they're all not dead isn't because of Jesse, it's because of Walter (Heisenberg.) The moment Tuco died everyone else would have started pushing into that territory to expand and that's how terf wars are started and end. Jesse was no one on the street. They were "Given" Tuco's terf by bigger people because of their product. Just as Mike kept the Mexican Cartel from killing Walter in his own home, Jesse and Walter were able to sell by the approval of someone more powerful. Jesse is only alive because of Walter's loyalty to him. Jesse keeps trying to fight him because of his own father issues he projects onto Walter. Walter being older and a former teacher takes that role. Even when Jesse asks to be his partner, Walter helps him as a father still even though Jesse isn't a good business partner. Just like what happened with Gus and Jesse getting high with Jane. Just as Jesse tries to sell to Gus without Walter. Just as Jesse tries to hurt Walter by hurting Hank. Who, unlike Jesse, owns his own mistakes and short comings. Owns his fear and anger and takes responsibility for his lapse of judgement and anger. I thought It was in this episode but you'll see Jesse, isn't him either. The two men closest to being respectable are Gus and Hank. They both are flawed as well. There's is another but that comes later. So no, it's not Walter's fault Jesse has nothing but his own flaws. Jesse's friends slim and Brandon are just pawns to Jesse. He uses them to either sell for him or sell to them. When do you see him reconnect with them for just fun or as friends outside this business? His parents after he got clean and bought the house, when did he reach out to them to reconnect and make amends? He's not because his pride and anger. They just wanted him clean and for it to stick, why hasn't he invited them over for dinner to show he's doing better? Because he's not. He's still dealing and when he had the money and change to start fresh that Walter gave him, he instead brought Hank right to them. He had more than enough money to start working or even invest into his own business, Jesse decided to compete with Walter. Yeah, great he's not using but he's still in the lifestyle trying to One up his father/Walter. If anything, he doesn't even care about his actual father, but he cares more about Walter because Walter actually shows up for Jesse. Every time Jesse was hurt, Walter was there. Every time shit hit the fan for Jesse, Walter shows up. Keep in mind this business isn't a restaurant. They don't settle patent disputes or location issues in court or breach of contract, they kill each other. If Walter really viewed Jesse as a "business" partner and he did the things Jesse had done, Jesse would have been killed by Tuco in that ditch. Look at what happened with Crazy 8 and his cousin, those were Jesse's partners before Walter got involved. They would have killed Jesse the day he showed up at crazy 8's place if not for Walter's product. He wasn't even the snitch, crazy 8 was. Walter has done nothing but look out and protect Jesse, not just as a partner but as a son. Does Walter degrade Jesse at times, yes. You're right he's bad for that and that's Walter's pride but Walter never swung at Jesse the way Jesse swings at Walter. That's because Walter is a father. He has two kids and Jesse is grown but still more of a son following his footsteps than Walter Jr. It's sad to see that hate toward Walter when he's done nothing but stick his neck out for Jesse, treat him as a son and try to teach him. When he tried to get Jesse off of Drugs countless times and tried to get Jesse out of the business to do something else. It's all pride on both their ends. Walter has the game changing formula and knowledge and Jesse was no body. Just a street level pusher about to be killed to take the fall for snitch who ratted out his cousin. So to say it's just business, no killing Jesse would be business. Saving his neck again and bringing him in as a partner 50/50 is love.
