This video should hopefully guide new owners, prospective owners, and fans of the SPAS 12 alike understand how to actually get it running. The instruction manual for the SPAS is pretty poorly written, hopefully this makes it a little easier.
Note that all of these instructions start after taking the safety off. I should have mentioned that...
For more information or to purchase replacement parts for your SPAS 12, google the SPAS 12 Project, or go to SPAS-12.COM

A redesign of the elevator would make this shotgun more practical. Loading a shotgun needs to be as easy as possible

Apparently this was a design limitation of older semi-auto shotguns in order to include a bolt hold open. I've read some manuals for old Beretta and Mossberg shotguns that had this same thing. The High Standard HS-10 also does that as well. Newer semi-auto shotguns have design changes to allow a bolt hold open to work while also leaving the elevator open for loading. Redesigning an entire trigger group to allow that for the SPAS-12 will probably be difficult, though.

Could engineer some small piece that you slide over the button and it holds the bolt release for you. Just a thought.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for all the info and for keeping the Project alive. I've been a huge fan of the SPAS-12 for years. Its great to see others enjoy the spas-12 as much as I. I really hope to own one one day.

Great Informational video For a great gun thats loads of fun. Now I can reference it to people that are ignorant on the "complexity" so much. It really isn't that complicated. Funny thing is I bought one as a collectors piece. Then I got a VEPR12 to shoot more frequently than the SPAS12. Ironically that to has become a collectors piece.

Anyway, I also wanted to ask if you had any experiences with the franchi SAS 12. They are getting harder to find than spas 12s and I wanted to know if it is worth it to buy one because just like the LAW 12 there aren't shit for videos on KZfaq

I know it's been a while since you asked, but this might help someone else. If you want one of the three and can't get a SPAS, I'd go for a LAW as a second choice. I own all three but the SAS was insanely hard to find. I ended up cobbling one together with a Gunbroker receiver and various parts from Numrich. If you find one at a good price, definitely go for it. They are very well made. All the parts are beefier than an 870 or 590 but of course it does cost more.

Very good video. But I can't understand something about the mag cut off button.Should you keep it pressed while pulling the bolt back in order to cut off the mag or by pressing it snaps and you don't need to hold it press? Because the read manual says: "You may cut off the ammunition supply by pressing the magazine cut off button in until it catches..." And if there is another round in the magazine and you try to disengage the cut off button before bolt closed will jam occur? Regards!
@hardataq
@hardataq 8 жыл бұрын
+martin somebody The magazine cutoff is a little touchy (on mine anyway) so if I'm using it at all I will keep my finger on it to keep the magazine locked out. Sometimes even the action of removing my finger from it will be enough to pull it out and throw a shell into the receiver which then sends the bolt flying forward and chambers the round. There is a slight "catch" that you can feel when you push it in, but it's not as positive as you might hope. If you disengage the cutoff while there are still rounds in the magazine tube it will do as I mentioned above, the round will pop out from the magazine tube into the receiver, which will trip your carrier latch, which then causes the lifter to activate and your bolt to close, actively loading the gun. Pretty much the same thing that happens when I "karate chop" it in this video. Hope this helps!

Unfortunately I do not, I have been in contact with an owner of a SPAS 12 though, and he had some custom fabricated by a gunsmith. You can check out a few pictures of them in the gallery section on spas-12.com!

(Thanks for the answer) that is interesting. I have wanted a gun for skeet shooting and got a franchi LAW 12 just because I thought it would be interesting to have because I didn't have enough for a spas 12. Long story short it works great for skeet shooting but I wanted to experiment with some chokes but I already knew they where hard to find. I have a gunsmith making a recoil buffer for that because as you know they are made of a bullshit material. I was tempted to ask the gunsmith if he could do that but I didn't. The only thing is about a week ago a spas 12/law12 choke that was sitting on gunbroker for about 2-4 months on and off sold for 115 dollars with a fixed price

@hardataq
@hardataq 9 жыл бұрын
I'd say the average price for a SPAS is around $1500, that varies greatly depending on condition and accessories, but I'd say if you had $1500 saved up you should be able to find a decent one with a crossbolt safety. Gunbroker prices will always be higher, but I found mine for $1300 locally for example. Good luck!

bunkerfest The best advice I can give you is that if you want a SPAS with a folding stock, buy it with a folding stock. Chances are you'll never find one afterwards, and if you do it's going to be insanely expensive. You can save yourself a lot of time, money, and headaches by buying the exact gun you want. You should be able to find folding stock models for not too much more than the $1100 you're looking at, though they may have a lever safety which is up to you for how important it is.

Could you use the parts from the spas 12 such as the folding stock an heat and charging handle on an 870 or franchi sas 12? I live in California and spas 12s are illegal here and iwant to dress up pump action only shotgun with spas 12 parts took make it look like one.
@OMGLYKEWOW
@OMGLYKEWOW 7 жыл бұрын
The SAS 12 can use the folding stock right off the bat, but if you get the version meant for the SPAS it won't latch in the folded position unless you go the whole hog and use the SPAS front half as well. If you do use the front end of a SPAS you'll also need the bit of magazine that attaches to its receiver because the one from the SAS is too short. The bolt/bolt carrier from the SAS is compatible with the SPAS parts. If you do use the SPAS bolt you have to leave the charging handle out because the SAS receiver has no slot in it. So it's doable with a SAS 12, but pricey and you still might be violating California laws on folding stocks and such. An 870 would be impossible without very extensive custom mods.

If you can find a spas parts kit (complete) you can convert a spas 12. From the receiver back their pretty much the same gun. You swap the gas piston and barrel, done.
@touofthehighplains
@touofthehighplains 9 жыл бұрын
Do you mean covert from a SPAS-12 to a LAW-12? Why are LAW-12 so much cheaper than the SPAS-12? Weren't they both banned from import? Is it just because the SPAS-12 is just more sought after?
@leokrupp4442
@leokrupp4442 9 жыл бұрын
Sorry, convert a law 12 to a spas 12. Swap the bolt, gas system, and barrel. It helps if you already have a SPAS 12 to use as a reference.

I wished that they would bring back the SPAS-12 - WITH UPGRADED IMPROVEMENTS!! First, fix that damn safety where it won't misfire. Next, make it MUCH more durable and reliable. As much as I like it, I would NEVER have it as a gun for home defense in it's current design. Too damn flimsy. The Tristar Tech 12 - which is a generic Benelli M-3 made in Turkey is more reliable and just better. Finally, redesign it to where it can also cycle 3 inch magnums. If FRANCHI could do all that, the gun would sell!

Kevin Wiltshire $2,000 or more is what I always seen them for for the folding stock version. The fixed stocks ones are cheaper from $1,600-$1,800. You’ll have to look and search online or go to your local gun show and see what a person offers for it. But remember that they are old shotguns so you might want to check the condition before buying it.

I heard that a spas 12s pump action is springy and feels like shit
@hardataq
@hardataq 9 жыл бұрын
That's pretty true. Since it's an autoloading shotgun it has to have a recoil spring, so when you pump it you're working against that recoil spring that any other pump shotgun wouldn't have. Since the pump is more of a "bonus feature" than it's main purpose, most people don't use it unless they're wanting to shoot cheap ammo.
