These look awesome. Going to use for garden boxes instead of traditional lag screws.

I just built a garden bed with 1/4 inch, 307 steel (junk), lag bolts. Over half the screws snapped, wasting the wood and the 400 screws I bought for a set of beds but I learned on the first 48 screws in the first bed. Now I have to start over. You get what you pay for, that's for sure. I'd never heard of Spax but I'm glad I found them now. I'll be cutting up the one bed and rebuilding it, and future beds will, assuming these perform like expected, will all be Spax.

Thank you for explaining and demonstrating proper use of these bolts. I build custom cat purrniture, they're solid, but I am starting to build bigger ones, and wanted self-tightening screws. Again, thanks.

Do you typically cover the screw head with some sort of putty or do you just paint over it?

I do a lot of DIY and dont follow code or normal accepted construction methods. You get videos that say you cant use screws, gotta bolt or use a $20/30 simson or whatever tie. OK, those suckers cost some bucks per tie. I used different sizes of these things and I use them for everything. Unless you have an elephant using your pool deck, stairs or using lead sheets on your roof these suckers really hold the weight and tight.

These appear to be painted steel fasteners, but maybe they sell a galvanized version. Correction, they are labeled HCR coated, which is apparently proprietary. "The two most popular chemicals for wood pressure treatment are alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) and copper azole (CA), which are both active corrosion materials. Only two corrosion protection systems are recommended for use with these pressure treatment chemicals: hot-dip galvanized steel and stainless steel."

What is the shear strength compared with a framing nail?
@cm01
@cm01 4 жыл бұрын
A given screw is going to be harder and more brittle and actually have less shear strength than a given nail with a shank of the same diameter.
@huejanus5505
@huejanus5505 4 жыл бұрын
They are stronger (shear) than lag bolts twice their diameter and have greater tension (pullout) as well. I'm sure they dwarf framing nails.

Their deck screws suck two screws in the tip stripped out I had to open the other box to use its tip same thing I was pissed all theses screws no tips just a bunch of screws with no tips T 20 tip you can see its to small of a head for the Job. Maybe the lags are better who knows I won't be buying tired of being sold low end to learn the company makes a higher end.

Cookinitmax, Hillman square drive deck screws. Economical deck screw that’s pressure treated rated. Grip rite also makes a combo drive you can get in exterior screws/deck screws. Also not bad cost wise. If you just gotta have the best, GRK. Be aware that they make screws designed for interior use as well, so make sure you get exterior rated ones
