I met somebody who has a cat who is not neutered and when I said "do you know who many kittens your cat has fathered!?" And then they basically told me it wasn't their problem. It made so me mad and still does.

I adopted a 10 year old beautiful female from a shelter who had pyometra, she was in so much pain and emaciated until she had a hysterectomy. This type of information needs to be taught and spread everywhere to protect these amazing animals.

My cat adopted me almost three years ago. She was a street cat living without anybody really taking care of her. She lived in a rough neighborhood where the residents of one house would throw her scraps of food. I took her to the vet to have her spayed as soon as she had decided I was hers. She was about four months old (our best estimate). She was pregnant, had fleas and worms, and had a body index of 3 (out of 9); also, her tail is paralyzed. She recovered nicely and quickly (except for her tail; she can't move it). She has been nothing but a delight! Fast-forward to this year. We had to take her to the vet for frequent urination. The vet took x-rays and discovered, on top of all her problems when she adopted me, that someone had shot her with a BB gun at least twice; she still has the pellets in her. I was heartbroken. PLEASE spay and neuter your cats! Feral and homeless cats (and dogs) SUFFER! I want to give a huge thank you to the ASPCA who took great care of her for her spay and other initial treatments for absolutely no money!

This video makes me so happy. I can definitely say the problem is much, much worse over here in India. Over here, breeding your pets is a given, and vets will actually assist you with the job, except in cases where the animal is hurt/ there are babies in your house and you don't want animals in heat around your baby. When we first brought home our cat, Ryu, my mother and I sat down and discussed all the resources we had on hand, vet tests that would need to be done, etc. And then she suddenly said "we should get her breeding done too" (we thought he was a female then). I literally paused the whole conversation before asking "Really?" and when she said "That's better for her, isn't it?" I went on a rampage about the health benefits of sterilizing. But that's the thing. For me, due to all my years of research before our first official pet, getting the animals sterilized was a given. While for my mother, getting the animals to make babies was the given instead. We did get him neutered once I did my entire research and all, but there are millions of pet owners here who simply don't. I once had someone tell me that they got their dog "crossed" because "that's the right thing to do. They'll want babies too, right?" My father held off on the sterilization process for two reasons, one being a lack of funds, and then because he was afraid of karmic backlash since we were "messing with nature." My dad still had the procedure done when he saw how the cat suffered without being able to go outside. But other people don't really know. They don't mean anything bad and they only have good intentions for the animals. They just don't know the grim realities of what the animals face each time they go through a heat cycle. They also believe that breeding the animal is the best for them because they want babies. I've tried talking to anybody who brings it up, and I hope I've changed a few minds. Your video will help me change more. This cycle of breeding the animal because "nature" is contributing the most to the pet overpopulation problem.

Add to the list of myths: People think the cats will miss their reproductive organs, as if they're only half a cat without them. Honestly, that's just projecting their own silly insecurities onto their cats. Cats couldn't give a stuff if their ovaries or testies get removed, they just wanna be fed at the end of the day. There was a ridiculous episode of Bondi Vet in Australia once where this guy got his dog (a bulldog, I believe) neutured, but didn't like the idea of him not having big looking testies anymore. So he went to the expense & hassle of having silicone testies imported from America to be put into his dog. Absurd ego trip on the part of that fool owner, the dog didn't care & it really just put him in unnecessary danger, plus those things could rupture & make him very sick or even kill him. More money than brains, that guy. 😞

And yet there are still people who just don't get it no matter what you tell them! I had an elderly lady who didn't want the cats in her feral cat colony to be spayed or neutered! I finally got the county to come in and trap the cats and got the females spayed.

My baby girl peed EVERYWHERE the few times she went into heat. She was deemed too little at that time for the operation, so her brother, same age, but bigger, had to get the snip until she was large enough. I was given the option to give her birth control pills, but I read that they can attribute to cancer, so I opted to just be on pee-vigil. I was lucky that all she did was pee in unwanted areas. She was extra affectionate, loved the belly rubs I gave her to somewhat calm her down. She was just restless and a little loudmouthed. She didn’t show urges to get out, she had her (already neutered) brother to annoy. Twerking in front of him, confused why he would not respond to her seductiveness. My siblings (a year old in a week), are beautiful former Grecian strays from Athens found in an abandoned house, I’ve adopted them and signed a contract that they’re not to be bred. Luckily here in The Netherlands it’s illegal to euthanize healthy pets. But I also think a vast majority has their pets fixed.

thank you and bless you! it amazes me the people that still won't get their animals spayed or neutered. i have taken other peoples cats in that were always coming to my place. there's a dumbass where i live now that after i told him that he needed to have his cat neutered he said he couldn't do that because his cat would lose his "status" in the neighborhood. i thought he was joking and then realized he was totally serious. the cat comes over and pees all over the outside of my front door and then my cats pee on the inside of it. (they are all neutered). it's been my mission to get that cat to come to me so i can take him in. the guy makes him live outside and he always looks like he's been fighting. i feel so bad for that cat. but there are a lot of idiots just like this guy and there are a lot of idiots out there that shouldn't even have an animal because they are so ignorant and irresponsible. SPAY AND NEUTER!!!!

A few months ago I took in a very sweet young ginger stray. Scanned by vet, no chip. Put up 'Lost' ads, no takers. Fruity smells appeared in short order as did him coming in with chunks out of him. Within 2 months of neutering that all stopped. It can take that long, so please be patient. A UV light and odour neutralizing spray are effective to find and counter bad pee in the meantime.

I witnessed a fight between my neighbours cat and another cat a few months ago. My neighbours cat was almost scalped in the process and he lost what little confidence he had. He's all better now but it could have been so much worse!

In defense of spaying: my babygirl Cricket became a totally different cat FOR THE BETTER after being spayed. She was very thin and would lose weight when she went into heat, which always worried me, and wasn't very friendly at all. After spaying, I realized how anxious she had been before. She started eating better and maintains a healthy weight (she is not fat, she is still her sleek self but no longer has heat periods, so she no longer gets so thin I can feel her backbone) and she became so much friendlier. I know it improved the quality of her life... and my ability to sleep.

Just had a cat fixed last week actually, we're fortunate to have a clinic nearby where that's all they do and for a reasonable price, I guess in an attempt to reduce the number of strays. She was a young stray who just decided she was keeping us about a couple of months ago, ran up to us meowing and everything, and while I looked around I was unable to find a previous owner. My older cat isn't happy about her, but he doesn't try anything violent, and can be trusted around her alone without one of them being locked up, so I'm sure he'll come around.

We adopted our cat almost two months ago. The shelter already took her to the vet so we didn't have to, but we would have if needed. No regrets on adopting!

I work at a local shelter and the "kitten season" is so hard to handle every single year. We work a lot by educating but as long as there are so many people who think that their cats need to have babies we can't take a breath. Especially when the kittens are left in a box at the forest. :(

Another myth: Spaying and neutering is expensive. Many communities offer low cost or even free services. Also, not being able to go to a clinic isn't an excuse. Here in San Diego County we have Neuter Scooter, which is basically a mobile clinic that'll go to a convenient neighborhood location to provide services.
