This video is about the input impedance of a 3 way speaker crossover. What is the impedance of the filter? We will measure the impedance with resistors connected to all three outputs (woofer, midrange, and tweeter). #crossover #3waycrossover #Kasuncrossover

Your videos are wary great, this video is a great addition!:-) I do often look at your videos, several times and I think I get new insights, so I have a question about calculating speaker filter or smps components. I think I have found out that calculating components is not that easy. As I understand it do components change capacity, inductions and resistance, depending on the frequency and heat. So when you design a filter from your formulas it is only a good educated guess and you end up, having to test the circuit after construction? :-)

Fried Mule Thanks for the great feedback and support! Yes, testing is ‘the proof in the pudding’:) But, with some experience or guidance, you can gain more confidence before going to the lab. Selecting an inductor that, at the operating current does not get too hot, then you can approximate the inductance. Say for instance, maybe a power inductor drops 10% with a 30 degree C rise. Looking at curves will help get you there. I’m working on the walk through design steps for the boost converter. I’ll have the component selection with trade offs as part of it. This and the buck converter that I’ll do next will really help get to the right parts the first time around;)

Hello, im trying to build, or as I should say, improve my old speakers, which contained 2 woofers (8 ohms) and 1 tweeter (12 ohms), all connected in parallel to an amp thats supposed to support 6-16 ohms. If my calculations were right, the parallel connection resulted in a 9.3ohms load which is fine. In those speakers tho, there was no crossover what so ever, so I thought of ordering a 3way 4speakers crossover (tweeter, mid and 2 woofers). Ill replace the woofer for an 8ohms one and add a mid range with 6ohms. The crossover i was looking for supports all the mentioned impedances, but will my amp work with it? Im desperate of searching for anyting online about speakers, because the more I know, the less I know :-D thanks in advance

Do you think this filter can handle 4ohm woofers?
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 4 жыл бұрын
The total power rating is 160 Watts, so I think a 4 ohm might be ok if you are not running the power up too high. I’ll power this up and test it with both 4 and 8 ohm loads. Thanks for the great question Deejee!

THE WAY I UNDERSTAND THE ANALOG DISCOVERY IS THAT IT IS MADE FOR PERSONS WHO DON'T HAVE OR,WANT TO BUY ANY LAB EQUIPMENT LIKE FOR THE HOBBY PERSONS, NOT FOR SERIOUS ENGINEERING WORK.
@coldfinger459sub0

david luther Yes true it’s used in universities all over the country for students to mimic the operation of the expensive lab equipment. Students and Hobbies can’t afford hundred thousand Dollar Tektronix lab scopes and frequency analyzers but hobbyist and most engineers don’t need accuracies that are down to 0.00001% But what I have found out in the EEV blog and audio hobbyist forms the analog discovery is use quite a bit. Speaker builders and amplifier builders and those designing crossovers use it as a regular tool.

@@KissAnalog thanks. My crossover is a little different though. It doesn't have those dual lines traces, just single line that splits it up to positive and negative zones. I have a map of it, but I'm trying to understand the crossover more. I'm getting continuity when I put a lead on the woofer output and touch it to parts of the tweeter circuit and I don't always get continuity on the woofer ckt parts. I found all the the spots that connect to negative because of your other video, thanks! But I only know the postive end for the parts that are right next to the positive outputs. There's four little islands of positive and negative. How do I know which goes to which speaker? I'm having a very hard time reverse engineering this. Thanks for you great videos.

Thanks Larry! Why remove copper? - are you concerned with oxidation? What if the connections are soldered? That adds tin so there is little to no oxidation.

@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 4 жыл бұрын
david luther Hi David - great questions! think it is the current probe that is out at low frequency, but I’ll have to investigate this a bit more. The reason it is impedance is because one probe is voltage and one is current, so for gain it is voltage out divided by voltage input, but here I am taking voltage divided by current so it os ohms or impedance.

I want to asking you dir.. before that i am sorry for my english maybe not smooth well.. and newbiest question.. I am form Indonesia sir. Is it possible to combine a driver speaker with crossover 4 or 8 ohms sir? I've crossover 4 or 8 ohms and my woofer impedance is 6 ohms. How about the quality of frequency, could be running well sir? I am appreciated for your help to answer my question sir. Regards, Sam
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think they will work OK with speakers of different Ohms. The crossover might be off a bit but probably not noticeable. The efficiency of the speaker might make a bigger difference. Thanks Sam - your english is just fine - I would like to be as good at a second language;)

great video showing what does the amplifier see the crossover as, and about the software, i'd found another software that's easier to use, called WinPCD (download link : www.speakerdesign.net/WinPCD/installation.htm ), i ask about the software to my friend that works as a speaker designer, he told me that VirtuixCAD is more advanced than WinPCD, but if you want to use VirtuixCAD, there's a ton of tutorial on youtube, but i suggest this one video made by Kirby Meets Audio( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/obChqc2b3q7VoXU.html ), on the video he's using the speaker's frequency response file, but i think it's still work if you don't have the speaker frequency response file and the WinPCD probably not gonna work if you only want to simulate the crossover by its self.
