For parallel , 1/Rtotal= (1/R1+R2) + (1/R3 +R4); which is 1/8= 1/16 + 1/16, where the 16 = 8 + 8 in series., simples.
@wilsjane3 жыл бұрын
True, but is is even more complex, since the inductive component of impedance does not follow the same formula. For large systems, mixed impedance speakers are normally transformer coupled.

well this was useful, I got four sets of four totalling 16 and I have had this wrong for six months now! its lucky 8/16 units are a surround sound with seperate amplifiers otherwise I would be having to layer series/paralel curcits under other series/parallel curcits and i would be in hell. I agree with the few people on here say that your explanation needs more clarity but minus this you appear to be right, I also double checked with other places to be sure. anyhow, keep doing what you're doing, and thanks!

Thank you for the video. I have a 50 watt amp head we have to parallel outputs. I can adjust the ohms from 4, 8, and 16 ohms. I want to connect to cabinets to my amp head. One cabinet is rated at 16 ohms the other at 8 ohms. The 8 ohm has two 300w speakers the 16 ohms two 30watts Therefore, which impedance should I use on my amp head?

(for home application) if we use an active subwoofer will it still draw power from the amplifier and still have to formulated first or just plug it in into a pairs of the socket (back L & R maybe) since it already have it own power source??
@McIntec12 жыл бұрын
@bercerobry Let's say you have 10 10 watt speakers and a 100 watt amp. There you would have a matched set of speakers. But lets say you you want to add 10 more, so now you have 20 10 watt speakers. What would happen is because the amp can only give a max of 100 watts it would split the wattage in half. So the speakers would only get 5 watts each. The speakers would still function but you wouldn't get very much sound out of the speaker, and this is obviously a scenario that couldn't be possible unless you had a huge amp or a 70 volt system. Keep in mind the wattage of a speaker is not always what you need to power it. It will run on nominal power.

Do you think I should use a line-level 2nd-room output for use with a separate amplifier & switch on the Onkyo-TX-NR636 for zone 2 so that I can keep the 7.1 sound in the main room so it don't drop down to 5.1 when I use the Powered Zone 2 Speakers (for Patio) and another room at the same time ? So.. If you're an electronic student can you explain to me, if i have 4x16 ohm speakers connected in parallel, how big should be the impedance on amp?
@simcHyt7 жыл бұрын
Ideal amp impedance would be 4 ohms, but it would also work just fine if it was 3 or 6 ohms. Any lower or higher of that could cause damage if played at higher volume for longer time.
@sadistikexekutor15857 жыл бұрын
And if it would be connected as series? Thanks btw.

...reminds me of back in '96 when my friend John needed to drive 3 8ohm woofers with a single stereo 4ohm/channel amp and all 3 were sharing the same enclosure area so they all needed to see the same power. WQe put two in parallel for a 4 ohm load to one channel and the other woofer on the other channel for 1/2 the power out of that channel but an equal amount of power to all 3 woofers! ...then there was the time when another friend needed to drive 4 10" DVC woofers in one long cabinet...

@McIntec14 жыл бұрын
@123pikk how did I figure this out? The answer is math and research :P if your amp is rated for 8 ohms per channel and you want to connect 2 speakers per channel that are rated 4 ohms, you would connect the 2 speakers in series (like the batteries in a remote, negative to positive |-+-+|) for the left channel and do the same for the right channel. That is assuming that your amp is rated for 8 ohms per channel and the speakers you connect are 4 ohms.
@wilsjane3 жыл бұрын
True. It was his explanation for parallel coupling that was totally inadequate, since with a 16 ohm and an 8 ohm in parallel, the 8 ohm speaker would be drawing twice the current of the 16 ohm speaker. The total impedance would be around 5 ohms
@McIntec14 жыл бұрын
@jabezprayer1 120 volts? Are you sure your not mistaken that for the A/C power? Most amps that have transformer terminals for speakers (in North America) are 70 volts. Apparently there is amps that have 25 volts but I have never come across them. In other countries there are amps that have 100 volts or more.

Hi, nice informative vides indeed! Can you tell me how can I connect 14 Speakers (Bose DS 16F loudspeakers) together. How many channels in an AMP will I need to do it? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
@SoundSystemDesigner9 жыл бұрын
YOUNIS IBRAHIM Under the grill of the Bose DS16, you will find a rotary "tap selector". Set it to the desired wattage. We'll assume you've selected 16 watts. Fourteen speakers, set to 16 watts each, gives you a total of 224 watts. You need to find a 70 volt amplifier that produces at least 224 watts per channel. (A mono amp is fine. Most 70 volt amps are mono.) Ideally, you want to provide 20% head room, which would have you use a 269 watt, 70 volt amplifier. An oddly specific wattage, so I would steer you toward a 300 watt, 70 volt amp.

If both speakers are rated at a nominal impedance of 8 ohms then it will create a total load of 4 ohms connected in parallel. Car audio runs at 4 Ohms. Consumer/Pro audio runs at 8 Ohms. A car sub amp will handle a 2 Ohm load. A Consumer/Pro sub amp can usually handle a 4 Ohm load. Some will even handle a 2 Ohm load. 4 x 8 Ohm speakers connected in parallel = 2 Ohms Nominal.

Good Job partner! I'm doing this exact installation today in a fitness center. I'm using a 430 amp with 7 channels and an ohm rating that goes from 4 to 16 ohms. I'm hooking my 8 ohm Yamaha dual cone speakers up in series and then parallel back to the amp. Since with my application I don't need stereo left and right I'm going to use a mono 3.5mm plug to get the same signal (sound up the middle)from my sound source into the amp then out to every speaker. Again, good job, this is very easy to follow for those who've never done this.

Actually... it's not divided by 2. Ohm's are added when connected in series, but when it comes to parallel connection there's a formula for this : Speaker1 multipled by Speaker2 and divided by speaker1 plus speaker 2, so it's not just by 2 all the time unless both ohm values are exact the same.

Hi McInTEC, I need your suggestion, I wrongly connected the polarity of the cable from my Spendor S3/5R2 speakers to my vintage Sansui stereo amplifier as follows: As wrongly the 2 Negatives of the 2 speakers were connected to the one channel of the amplifier and the 2 Positives of the 2 speakers were connected to the another channel of the amplifier. One speaker was working and another speaker was not working. I was confused and didn't notice about the wrong polarity for about 15 minutes, then I checked the cable connections and detected the wrong thing. I became panic and sweated like anything. After I made the correct connection the two speakers sing as usual. But.. even though the speakers are now working, still I have some fear. By the wrong connection: Would the cross-overs of the speakers become weak? Did I do the great mistake? How will be the life and health of the speakers? May I keep the speakers for long time?. If it would become weak, that would how much? Kindly let me know about in detail. I am much worried about the thing. If I hear from you as: 'Need not be worried and the things are fine' , then I will be jumping with my transplanted knees! I very much love these small beauties. But, now I am sleepless. Thank you, Regards, Suseendran.

What would be the plan to connect something like 6 or 10 speakers this way? The Speakers are 6 Ohm. The Amp is can take upto 4 ohms. Would really appreciate a detailed reply. P.s- I thought abut connecting 2x 6ohm speakers in series, Then connect 3 such pairs in parallel. Would the impedance be roughly 4 ohms? And I have 6 speakers?

@baler18 first you need to know the impedance your amp has for output.

Hi, I have an amp with 12 x 8oms speakers and 3 sounds controllers to control 3 zones. I want 4 speakers in each zones, each bunch of 4 speakers (2left and 2 right each) hooked up to a controller and the 3 controllers hooked up to the amp. Is it safe to go parallel for each bunch of 4 to the controllers and the 3 controllers in parallel to the amp? Thank you for your help! Remi

Nice! It seems a decentralized system? In centralized system one would have maximum of two speakers....In mixed centralized and decentralized one would have many....The sum of the speakers input (watts) has to match the amplifier output (watts) in PA system?
