Hi guys and WELCOME BACK to JJSAYS! In this video my mom and I venture out into the world and practice a little Chinese while supporting local businesses in Chinatown, NYC! We hope you enjoy!
(PS: Sorry my camera died! 😛)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Businesses mentioned:
◉ Wo Hop: www.wohopchinese.com/
◉ Aji Ichiban: www.yelp.com/biz/aji-ichiban-... (On Yelp it says this location is closed, but it wasn't just a week ago when I filmed this, so I hope that's not true!)

Why do you say "humbling themselves".. They are simply interested. Besides, here they are in a "China town" in America. Where are the America towns in China,.. Where Chinese people could learn more English....???

@@jdemeulenaer123 chinese people learn english from school, from watching american films and tv series and communicating with foreigners if they work in a multinational company or a company that does business with foreigners. There is no americam town in china because american expats tend to work as english teachers not restaurant or shop owners. There are places expats like to hang out so local people could go there to make friends. But they are not americam exclusive, there are other foreign nationalities there so cant be considered american town. But there are american corporates everywhere, mcdonalds, apple, starbucks, KFC, you only need to walk a few hundred meters befote you see one so if you wont run out of american things to look at. They are everywhere and not just concentrated in a small place like china town in NYKC.

Prior to the pandemic, I would go up to Chinatown for the soup dumplings! Thanks for being open and generous people using your channel in support of the Chinese community. As some of the other commentators stated, these days most of the immigrants are from Fujian province. The old Cantonese immigrants; their kids have already grown up to be professionals (doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants, etc.) leaving the family restaurant business behind. It’s a new wave of Chinese immigrants now. Very interesting to see how things change from generation to generation.

I just love the large portion of Chinese restaurants give to their customers, unlike in the UK, everything is small and expensive. I remember went to a restaurant for a quick bite some time ago in New York, ordered a starter and a main, I was surprised how big portion it was. I was full before I even finished the starter, had to ask for the waiter to take away for the main.

Thank you to you and your mom for appreciating and spreading joy about the Chinese language, it makes me proud of my heritage!❤️ I'm glad you're spreading awareness on COVID and prejudice against Asians, specifically, Chinese people. Also, my recommendation for disposable masks because I noticed it slipped a lot off of your nose-not your fault, thank you for fixing it-is to like mold the wiring (top side of the mask) against the shape of your nose and for the straps tie a knot to make it shorter and tighter around the face. Stay safe❤️❤️❤️

The older generation of Chinese are Cantonese speakers, and those born and raised in Canada and the US and they're either first or second generation born here. It's only the recent immigrants that speak Mandarin. My family's been in Canada since the late 1800s and we speak Cantonese and a Cantonese dialect.

it's actually something sad when you see a Chinese person like that who comes from far, trying to integrate in the local life, yet he hasn't mastered the main language used there. I've heard stories from my father about people like them. it's hard to imagine if some day I'm gonna have to live a very faraway place and I couldn't speak the language there. Anyway back on studying.

王齐平 My grandfather (dad’s side) came through Canada and settled in Boston back in 1916. He became a huge proponent of education for immigrants. He lived in Chinatown until he passed. Everyone knew him. He had a printer’s shop for decades. There is a small museum dedicated to him and his efforts to help new immigrants integrate into a new society.

The mandarin that is being considered as the official language by all chinese was actually how non chinese rulers such as the mongols n the manchurian would speak the han chinese language...but since they were ruling class, their altaic accented pronunciation became official pronunciation of the chinese language. Most chinese probably dont even know this fact.

If I'm not wrong, the schools in the PRC teach children from young to pronounce each of the Yin. Taiwan on the other hand, and many other Asian countries that speak Mandarin, don't really care about pronunciation, as long as the listeners are able to understand what you are saying.

Remember to wear the mask with the wire being at the top and to pinch your nose so it is tight and secure. If you don't do that then it ruins the effect of the mask and you may as well not be wearing it if everything can still get in haha.
