Erika Cheung (UC Berkeley Class of 2013) was one of the key whistleblowers in the Theranos scandal that stopped the company from processing thousands of patients samples with faulty technology. The story has been covered in the book Bad Blood by John Carreyrou, 60 minutes, ABC news, and recently the HBO documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in the Silicon Valley. After working for biotechnology companies, she committed herself to growing the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Hong Kong and throughout Asia. She was the founding team member of the Betatron, a startup accelerator based in Hong Kong. She works as a venture partner for two Asia-based VC firms focused on Health Tech & Biotechnology investments. Currently, she is launching a new non-profit, Ethics in Entrepreneurship: a movement aimed at fostering ethical culture within startup ecosystems. EIE acts as the connective tissues between tools, resources, and experts to implement ethics into the core of their businesses. after reading the book Bad Blood, I really admired how this young woman dared to stand up against a billion dollar company when she had no background and support, risking getting sued and losing everything she had.

Although I believe your comment to be of great and good intention, I have a question: what if what you want isn't healthy for you or those around you? Would achieving such a goal not be much greater cause for regret later after that realization has hit home? Sometimes things don't go our way for very good reason. Don't give up on yourself or the world around you, but also realize that what we want is not always healthy or good for us and the world.

I admire Erika so much! Her courage and moral integrity is extremely inspiring and learning more of her story pre-Theranos makes very much sense. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend the document on HBO about the whole Theranos scandal, it's very well done.

Much respect Erika. The world needs more people like you. The unfortunately reality is that most drugs and products approved by the FDA are a result of fraudulent and manipulated science just as you experienced. They don't get caught however because the regulators get a huge piece of the pharmaceutical pie, in fact many who serve on the regulatory agency have Pharmaceutical ties. As you said, whistleblowing needs to become the norm. We need more scientists and people in general with integrity.

Great presentation. What happened with the rest of the employees that also knew they were selling a failed product? How about those technicians that waited in the back fully compliant knowing that they were falsely processing the blood tests using the standard fda machine? How come they haven’t come forward?

because of the many non disclosure agreements they had signed. they were afraid. theranos had powerful lawyers and were very capable of taking these people to court. plus a bunch of intimidation tactics including hiring private detectives to stalk potential whistleblowers

but that's for the people that ended up resigning or were fired. yeah I'm puzzled too about the employees that stayed on despite the clear indication that the whole thing was a fraud.

sorry ah yes of course. Understandably worried they’d get sued for every penny they had. Even the grandson had to pay £400k in legal fees which is Insane, presumably Theranos has had to pick up that fee now.

Humility is central. A philosopher is pleased to be corrected, as this moves her closer to the truth. An ideologue fears being corrected as this undermines the beliefs that found their psyche. All ideological knowledge hinges on belief. Understanding this diminishes one’s identity being possessed by ideology and leads to a real personality, not persona, that can explore the textures of reality with truth as the goal.

When you need to translate from _whatever that is_ to _English._ I hate to assume to read minds, but let me see if I can help. I think perhaps what you meant to say was: _It is important to be honest?_ In witch case yes, It is incredibly important to be honest. As an example: obviously, either no one has ever been honest with you about your lack of linguistic illiteracy, or they have been and you've just not been honest with yourself about it. I would guess it's a mixture of both. If this were not the case, then you would have had no reason to ask that question. I'm not saying this to bash you, but hopefully to empower you to change that oversight. It is extremely important you do so because linguistic literacy is the foundation for all other higher learning.
