Spearfishing BLUEFIN TUNA in Wilsons Promontory, Australia

In this video my mates and I went freedive spearfishing for southern bluefin tuna and kingfish in Wilsons Promontory, Australia. We launched from Shallow Inlet, Wilsons Prom and looked for kingfish first, then crayfish and reef species and finally went after bluefin tuna. Conditions were great and we had a lot of opportunities and success.

hey mate- congrats on the tuna. you'll find that when spearing bigger fish (tuna included) the easier (and safest) way to dispatch them is to grab their tail first. grabbing their gill plate is often quite challenging as the first grab. you'll find it much easier and safer to grab the tail and then grab the gills after that. taking the tail effectively takes away their motor and means they can't drag you as easily and you'll find it way easier to hold on to! just for next time :))

Thanks mate, I appreciate the advice! I’ll keep that in mind for next time. I can only imagine how much more challenging it is as the fish get bigger

@@bluenick2704 no worries! Yeah I shot my first bluefin the other day and tail grab makes it much easier man as otherwise way too hard to hold on to

Hey mate, I understand why you’d say that, but there are both protected and open areas for fishing at Wilson’s Prom. The specific area where you cannot fish is called the Wilson’s Promontory Marine National Park, which starts around Tidal River on the west side and Cape Wellington on the east side. If you look up where we launched from (shallow inlet) you’ll see how far from this area we were. I appreciate the comment though and I 100% support fisheries regulations and respect closed areas.
