Rafi was born an Indian (because there was no Pakistan then!), but as an Indian I will certainly not mind Pakistani's claiming him since he spent his initial days in Lahore; because Mohd. Rafi goes beyond all national boundaries and religious barricades. Baiju Bawra songs are an example of this cross-cultural, cross-religious reach of music. A great Muslim lyricist, a great Muslim music director and a great Muslim singer created those fantastic songs of Baiju Bawra (whose story line and songs are Hindu) which will remain as one of the highest points of Indian film music. Mohd. Rafi's decision to stay back in India after Partition, is perhaps a reflection of what he would have loved - a united India into which he was born, rather than a divided India.
