Sangju Sangmu (상주상무) is a supporter of a Korean soccer team Jeonnam Dragons. Son had two chances to be exempt from serving the military. His first opportunity was to win a gold medal in Incheon Asian game in 2014, which they did. Unfortunately, Son was in Germany at the time to play for Leverkusen so it didn't count. His second opportunity was to win a medal from Rio olympic, but they did not get it. So as of today, Son is not exempt from serving the Korean military :(

Hey Zwe. here's what I think is the best answer for Son and the Korean mandatory military service situation. It is something that has resulted in many celebrities or athletes in Korea having to stop their careers to take part in, and there are exceptions granted (like the 10 year exemption that Park Chu Young got while he was a striker for Arsenal). However, there is a exemption for sports excellence that basically says if you win an Olympic Medal you don't' have to do the 2 years of service. Son was part of the bronze medal team at the 2012 Olympics, so no military service for him.
