The Typhoon and Tempest cockpit design demonstrates Hawkers admirable determination for pilot survivability. The super strong framework would limit deformation of the cockpit from linear, or forward compression in a crash. Many stories from pilots attribute their survival to this strength.Typhoon and Tempest at War by Arthur Reed and Roland Beamont Pp 68 depicts the result of a stall during a squadron landing where a Typhoon cartwheeled tearing off a wing, the tail and the engine. The pilot? Shock and a few bruises. Looking forward to this build Steve. This is a great start.
@TheModelShed11 ай бұрын
Thanks John very interesting it looks strong with all that framework around the pilot 👍

I built this kit and it was a pain in the you know were. hardest kit I have ever made. the undercarriage and the wheel wells were the worst bit. But its worth it as the finished aircraft now takes pride of place on my sideboard.
@TheModelShed11 ай бұрын
Yes it’s a test fit test fit and test fit again kit. I’ve done to U/C bays today and not one of the bulkheads fitted without trimming and filing. A bit of a change from my last two Kotare and ICM efforts.

I was thrilled to see this pop up on Friday, Steve, thanks for starting another 1/32 scale series. I have this in my stash and I couldn’t be happier with your choice of subject. As always, I really enjoy your relaxed pace and thoughtful approach to the build. Nice to hear the sheep in the background too!

Beautiful job as usual! As Typhoons and Tempests are among my favorite aircraft to ever fly, I am really looking forward to this series. I'll admit to being concerned when you didn't have an upload Friday, I was hoping all was well with you and yours. Then this dropped Saturday, and all was right in the world for 59.16 minutes. Beautiful !. I've used the Eduard Space set on their 1/48 P39 and have to say that the overall effect is simply stunning compared to the original fling panel and accessories panels. The 3d effect can't be described, one has to see it to believe it. Great tips for using the PE parts too, I've bought myself one of those magnifier lights for the PE parts on my Airacobra and it makes this sort of work so much easier for my nearly 70 year old eyeballs.

Wow! I didn’t see this one coming! Going to sit down with a cuppa and enjoy this one later today. I presume you know the shape issue of nose / radiator opening and the Barracuda replacement which although looks lovely is a huge faff to cut from block and fit to kit. With an exposed engine a lot of that goes away of course. Which scheme are you going to do? Very excited!
@TheModelShed11 ай бұрын
I’ve thought about the barracuda nose correction but as you correctly say I think the problem will be lessened by the open cowlings. I’ll see if I can reshape the spinner and do a halfway job of it.
@TheModelShed11 ай бұрын
Oh and I’ll be doing Clostermanns A/C but with corrected serial number.

Hi Steve. Lovely detail in that cockpit build. Those tweezers youre using look great quality could you say where they were purchased from.
@TheModelShed11 ай бұрын
The tweezers are great but they’re not commercially available. They’re surgical forceps which have been recycled.
@user-en3xe5gz9m11 ай бұрын
The cockpit looks amazing! I've read that there are fit issues with this kit so will be interesting to see how you get round them. By the way, those Malosa tweezers you use look good. Where did you get them from?
@TheModelShed11 ай бұрын
The fit is - erm - challenging. The tweezers are ex surgical forceps - recycled and unfortunately not available for general sale. They’re the best tweezers I’ve ever used.
@dlthomson5287 Жыл бұрын
What can I say but WOW! The 3-D decals really dress up the instrument panel and the resin plus the photoetch add to making the cockpit look fantastic. Out of curiosity have you considered the Azure FRROM 1/32 scale IAR-80A? Like the Tempest it is a limited run kit so there are some issues to address. Keep up the excellent work, looking forward to the next installment.
@TheModelShed11 ай бұрын
Thanks I’ll take a look at that sound like an unusual subject

It is. It has a long slender fuselage and like the French DeWoitine D.500 the cockpit is behind the trailing edge of the main wing.@@TheModelShed

Hi Steve, one question on your putty choice: it looks like you are into Mr Hobby and not Tamiya, interested in understanding your comparison. Kind regards Dave Porter, London
@TheModelShed11 ай бұрын
Hi Dave I’ve never used Tamiya so I wouldn’t know how they compare. I’ve thought about Tamiya as my local shop stocks it whereas the Mr hobby is mail order for me.

I’m very interested in this build as I’ve been looking at this kit to buy for quite a while. I don’t see aftermarket cockpit details as cheating. I just see them as being lazy 🤷♂️ You want to knock out builds and videos so it’s a great option to speed things up 🫣 I want to be exceptional at hand painting these details before I revert to these options and I will once I’ve learned all there is about working with what I have 👍
@TheModelShed11 ай бұрын
Its a tough kit because of the fit issues with the airframe - I’m battling through it now for part 2
