I love the idea of using the lunch bag for the toiletry bag! I may do that just for regular travel with my kids!! I actually think this video has great ideas for kids going to camp even without special needs! PS: Abbies 80s outfit is awesome!!

Ziplocs are the best when traveling with kids. I'd do the same thing with my little one. So nice not having to try to piece an outfit together out of a suitcase

Amanda P I was watching this video thinking that it could totally be a packing for kids & travel because I do the outfits rolled in a ziplock for three of my four when we travel....that way they are able to easily dress themselves, otherwise there would be fussing and whining because Mommy picked their clothes OR they would be going about their day looking like ragamuffins! Lol

Every summer (but I can’t this year because of Governor’s Scholars Program) I work the kitchen at a special needs church camp in Beattyville, KY! It’s called Sonshine camp and we always have such a blast! It’s so much fun to see all the campers singing and playing games and getting to make lifelong friendships. I think last year our youngest camper was 11 and our oldest was in his late 70s!

former ABA therapist here. You guys are the best!!! I am SO glad you take care of yourselves and Abby by sending her to camp, having respite and allowing others to love her. You have to take care of yourself to survive the daily stressors. I have worked with so many parents who literally at the end of their rope and yet they seem to be unable to reach to the community that can hep them. You all are truly doing your area and the world a service with this blog.

As someone who spent many years of my youth being a camp counsellor, I absolutely LOVED kids who showed up with their clothes organized into ziplocks. It was great and made for way quicker mornings! I loved your point to about kids being okay at camp... it's so true. And having that kind of attitude does wonders for a kid's success at camp. Typically, things like homesickness were made way worse by parents projecting their anxieties onto the kids. Homesickness is normal and even good but it will be okay. Kids may wear their favourite shirt five days in a row, but it will be okay. It will all be okay.... and typically, far better than okay! Camp is such a safe and caring place to develop independence for any kid.

I'm so excited for Abbie! How did you guys get over the fear of sending her away and trusting the buddies with her? My daughter has extreme meltdowns and zero patients, especially if she doesn't get her way. She will literally scream at the highest pitch she can and be self injurious until she gets her way. I have never came across another child like her , as far as her extreme screaming and meltdowns. She's only 4 though, but I feel so helpless , like it's never going to get better. Abbie does so well waiting on lines at the water park and such that I am envious of what your family is able to do. I have to wait in the car with Caylee literally everywhere we go because she doesn't understand she can't have everything in the store and it's an extreme meltdown. Hopefully ABA therapy combined with medicine will help, just feel hopeless atm.

I so agree, kids need to have a break. It is a healthy thing to do. You don't want your child so attached that they can't be away from you. Forbide it should happen but, people get sick and need to go to hospital and then what? This is just a wonderful program to let these children experience some independence however big or small.

I used to work at a special needs camp and your packing system is PERFECT! We absolutely loved it when parents put entire outfits into ziplocs to make getting dressed every morning that much easier. Same goes for the pullups/swim diapers - it's camp, the routine isn't the same as home, so accidents do happen, and it's nice to be able to just do a quick change of underpants and get right back to having fun! You guys really have this down to an art!

Packing for special needs of any type is hard. I have had complex medical needs since I was 13 so packing for any trip became a hassle. Last year for a week trip to Florida, I had to pack one personal suitcase, one personal carryon, one backpack (with medical things and personal things), and two medical suitcases. One of those filled with 9 bags of TPN and formula. Packing for me now is an event because I have to pack more medical items then personal things. I live by my checklist and really think out all I need to pack and how I am going to keep my temperature sensitive medications cold.

The past year, since your last camp vlog, we have used the "ziploc day bag" technique in our suitcases traveling, every hotel stay. It's astonishingly helpful. Each of us can snatch a bag from the suitcase and take it to the bathroom to get ready, no fuss. It's changed our vacations ever since. Loose clothes in a suitcase is over for us. It should be considered a normal traveling proceedure for everyone. Thanks again for such an awesome tip!!

Hello it's me Sam, I really like that packing method with the Ziplock bags the same technique is also used for people who are visually impaired or totally blind in this situation you could use the Sharpie marker for labeling large print, if the individual is totally blind Braille labels. This technique also helps for individuals who cannot identify color due to color blindness.

I went to a local special needs camp when I was little and loved it. It was a day camp for 2-weeks I think. They had four sessions, which are grouped by disability type.
