Professor An Hedrix: From technology towards biomedical applications
Research into extracellular vesicles (EVs) has yielded important biological insights and raised the prospect of developing novel biomarkers for cancer detection and monitoring (Hendrix, Nat Rev Mol Cell Biol, 2021). As with other emerging and transformative fields in research, it requires a broad, supportive base for EV research to mature and develop clinical applications (Hendrix et al., Nat Rev Meth Prim, 2023). My lab created the EV-TRACK knowledgebase (evtrack.org), a crowdsourcing knowledgebase that centralizes EV biology and methodology with the goal of stimulating researchers to put experimental guidelines into practice. EV-TRACK is endorsed by ISEV and recommended by the MISEV guidelines. (Van Deun et al., Nat Methods, 2017).
An Hendrix is a full professor at Ghent University and group leader at Cancer Research Institute Ghent in Belgium. She obtained a Master of Science in Bioscience Engineering (2005) and a PhD in Health Sciences (2010). An Hendrix is the organizer of the EMBO/EMBL practical course Extracellular Vesicles: from biology to biomedical applications and president of the Belgian Society of Extracellular Vesicles (BESEV). During the ISEV2021 meeting, she was awarded the Early/Mid-Career Investigator award for her seminal work on EVs providing a supportive ecosystem for their clinical application, including the development of the EV-TRACK knowledgebase, SOP for the analysis of EVs in liquid biopsies, and reference materials.
