I've been dreaming of testing out this absolute monster ever since I first got to handle one at Photokina in 2014. A huge thanks to Sigma UK for loaning it to me for a couple of weeks for testing - and what a challenge that testing was!

Agree, nice review but I do highly disagree with the statement super-tele lenses of it's time were comparable in image quality, because they actually were extremely sharp and they have been now for at least 30 years, go compare a Nikon AF-I 400mm f/2.8 from the 1990's or the Canon 500mm f/4L IS from 1999 and you'll see they are extremely sharp, even wide open and even into corner's, they are sharp wide open. Your statement that this Sigma has comparable image quality to super-tele lenses of it's time, is completely wrong and shows you obviously are not a previous or current user of one. I've owned and or used almost every super-tele lens from both Canon and Nikon since the 1990's and they have all been very sharp, today they are extremely sharp, but they have always been very sharp. The only thing unique about this Sigma is it's f/2.8 aperture at above 400mmm to 500mm. This allows it to produce more background separation than even the reigning kings of bokeh, the 600mm f/4 lenses! If you divide the focal length by the aperture you get 150 on the 600mm f/4m and on this Sigma at 500mm f/2.8 you get something like 172, which is amazing! Overall great review and I hope my comment does not seem harsh or rude, I just completely disagree with your statement on the image quality vs. lenses of it's time. This was fun to watch, I've never seen this lens in real life, but I have seen and used some rare lenses such as the Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L and the Nikon 13mm f/5.6, both of which had amazing image quality and both of which would be a dream to own. The CIA, FBI and I'm sure the British Mi5/Mi6 own a copy of the Canon 1200mm f/5.6L!

Thanks for the review, Chris. Years ago, I happened to be at B&H Photo in New York when they had this lens on the sales floor and attached to a Canon 1D X. A customer had sold their copy to the used camera gear department, and they couldn’t help themselves but take such a rare lens and put it out for people to try. It’s easily the most ridiculous lens I‘ve ever witnessed (in a good way), and credit to Sigma and their engineers for not being afraid to try new things.

I first saw one of these, around 2010, at the Sigma booth at a big photography trade show. Needless to say, I was amazed. But, I pretty quickly realized that, for my use, it was impractical due to the size and weight. I still find it amazing and I give props to Sigma for designing and building this beast, just because they can. For my own use, I have the Sigma 100-400 for use when I'm fairly stationary and on a tripod. For more mobile, handheld use I have the much lighter Sony 70-350 lens. Both of which, even if not super fast, are good solid lenses that give me very good image quality. Really enjoyed your video demoing this unicorn. Thank you.
