Today I am joined by Administrative Results, a member of Task Force 420, to discuss a legendary piece of surplus kit. The Pattern 83 Battle Jacket.
The Pattern 83 Battle Jacket was developed in South Africa, to be a part of the Pattern 83 system. This included the battle jacket, a chest rig, and the ruck sack. All of which were to be used together on a patrol.
Today we'll discuss the ins and outs of the battle jacket, and whether or not it is still relevant when compared to more modern kit.
Enjoy!
Big thanks to our sponsors!

Long term bush hunter mindset. Live off the land and bushcraft vs packing the kitchen sink. In the Boer war for S. Africa, the Dutch, hostile to the British and local tribesmen were feared for their marksmanship with the 7mm. Well known for headshots at greater distances than their adversaries could even reach effectively. The Dutch farmers were particularly effective bush hunters before they were forced to become warriors.

Love that you used the SAP-STF audio from that OG documentary, hellyeah!! I really like the Type 83 Battle Jacket, got a secondary- issued MFH made one (was UCP- ACU before I dyed and rattle-canned it) that was issued out sparsely to active and national guard units for a time, my only issue with them is the configuration of the magazine pouches on the waist section, very awkward trying to get to the ones on the far right hand side for right-handed shooters that primarily reload with the left hand. Just an ergonomics quirk. I use the Grenade pouches for my Compass and other stuff like Tape roll, spare Rag or Balaclava, Batteries, things like that. The Hydration/ large cargo pouches are nice, can fit quite a bit in them apart from a Canteen (like NODs). Also on non-surplus Type 83 BJ's (the MFH made ones), the Mag pouches are really tight, they usually only hold one STANAG mag each instead of two. The Shoulder padding is also something to be desired with improvement, a little on the bulky side (again especially the MFH ones), can be easily replaced with EVA Foam pad fill in modification to slim down the profile without sacrificing comfort (also helps with buoyancy as a side benefit, the original padding is open cell foam which isn't nearly as effective).
@DJTheMetalheadMercenary
@DJTheMetalheadMercenary Жыл бұрын
@GunsAmmoGear They're Chinese made, also Cordura Nylon is not the only brand/ type of Nylon on the market, and not the only type used in contracted manufacturing for gear for the military. Cordura Nylon is a proprietary brand and a competitor with other Nylon manufacturers, many Nylon Mills produce various blends and types of Nylon including but not limited to Cordura brand Nylon. They're stitched well, insofar as the material, the outer shelling of the pouches and some other parts are 700D or 1000D nylon, the strapping is nylon, the liner of the pouches and dividers and the grosgrain are a plasticine vinyl nylon blend, padding is open cell foam (that can be replaced if you want to use closed cell eva foam instead). They're overall more rigid than the SADF original rigs, but break in nicely over time. Much like the ucp-acu webbing vests we got in the Army for stateside training use, they're constructed along the same contract standards and were a secondary-issued piece of kit to national guard and reserve units as well as some active duty units for a time (I've got one that i'm doing a giveaway with after customizing it with a dye and paint job).

Standard issue when I was in the SADF. loved the battle jacket. I used to mount it over/on the back of my grootsak with my staldak (helmet) on the top of the grootsak when moving to a TB. Then the grootsak gets left at the TB while the battle jacket was used for the essentials...mostly mags. The back pouch at the top was mostly used if carrying the radio or wet gear and rat packs while the side pouches were used for the dixies...etc. everything you needed for and extended patrol. No time wasted, you could go into fire and movement immediately with your battle jacket making everything you need easily accessible. Good times, no armour needed.

A modern take on this would be a platatac vm-rig with the caf mod and a chicom y harness. Any modern camo you need, 8 mags, 4 he, 2 admin/ med, 2 gp, y harness adds space for water and dems etc. Damn fine kit if I say so myself.

Having fought in one of these I can say they were really functional. You could travel light, fast and silently. The chest webbing was also great, usually worn with main pack ( Grootsak). The main pack could be dropped in a hurry and then you were highly mobile and ready for the fight. They were forged and designed for our bush war.

I got a p83 to use a work rig, and I can confirm that there are many Down side to it, along with many ups. the rig it self is extremely comfortable and durable, it holds up to three days worth of shit if you need it to, along with the fact that it's easy to repair. Now the down sides are, it's really bulky, it's rare and if you break it to much your probably not going to find another one, it's a stand alone piece so it is for the most part ment for one job and one job only and for the price it's not worth it sometimes. Tldr it's good but it's not for everyone.
